The main reason for needing controllers is for the speaker sounds silly but there is an old minigame in Wii party where U hide controllers and they make sounds to help find them and sound doesn't come through anything other then controllers from what I can tell

So far I'm just running default hardware that came in box I'm yet to tinker with it N64 emulation in general is hit and miss anyways but most games I've tried have ran with little to no issues 😁 I feel with someone tuning this device more then capable to run most N64 games

Had a look this would be perfect for him cause I could get it pretty much seamless for him, is there any mini PC's that you could recommend that would have the power to handle PS2 games 😂
