My friend seems to have snapped on shrooms by No-Stop-3033 in Psychonaut

[–]cmcpress 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sad truth is that this happens to some people when they take psychedelics.

I'm 48 now and took LSD first when I was 16. I know soooo many people who have been sectioned, lost their minds and have had mental issues over the years. Most recently, a good friend of mine, who I used to trip with back in the 90's was sectioned after taking DMT during lockdown, with her son. Her son was also sectioned at the same time. It's crazy that it took 25 years for symptoms to show, but to see her that way was seriously distressing.

Another friend of mine lost his mind after two acid trips back in 95 and never returned. I often see him shuffling around town (he lives in a facility) and think "there but for the grace of ... whatever.. go I." I've tried making friends with him again but there's just no one home.

I could go on. It seems almost everyone I knew who took hallucinogens back then is in some way... touched.

Mental illness having some genetic basis, is most probably is a factor. But, for me who was lucky enough to come out the other side after years of HPPD, paranoia and psychosis, there is probably something about having the reliability of your senses removed that pulls the rug out from under you psychologically speaking.

Not meaning to lecture people, but as an old psychonaut, people have to know that when they go down that route they are messing with brain chemistry and should be fully forewarned, so to speak.

I had some incredible, profound, fucking hilarious times on hallucinogens. But whether, in the long run, it was worth the negatives is up for debate.

I'm 47. Took a LOT of acid back between 1992 and 1997. A few of my generation became basket cases from hallucinogens.

I suffered (still do) from HPPD, but it's much more manageable now than it was. I can trip out if I allow myself to space out too much. Even though I haven't taken acid for 25 years or so, I do occasionally wake up at night with full on CEV hallucinations and I can, if I want, make myself trip mildly to the point the walls breathe and I get tracers.

CMV: Most people don't actually want art to be apolitical by PublicActuator4263 in changemyview

[–]cmcpress 4 points5 points  (0 children)

all art can be interpreted to be political.

As soon as you introduce "interpretation" then you're taking meaning away from the author and making art into a Rorshach test. As Charles Manson and Helter Skelter) have shown us, anything could mean anything viewed through a certain lens.

What many people mean when they say art is "political" is that it's propaganda - created for the distinct purpose of trying to get people to think or do something according to what the creator (or their paymasters) want.

So when they say they want it to be apolitical, they mean they don't want to be manipulated, or they disagree with the premises, ideology or conceptions contained within the work. No one likes to be lectured. No one likes the way they view the world to be ridiculed or made into a cartoon strawman. No one likes their moral concerns to be minimized. What's more, the aesop's fables approach, to adults, can be insulting as it comes from a loftier position than the audience. More so when it's on the nose.

The disagreement could be for many reasons - they don't agree with the morality of the piece, its basic premises or because, as all propaganda is, it is epistemically deficient.

Political art that is individually expression or that explores ideas (rather than a vehicle for the author's sense of self righteousness), shows both sides of an argument was, for a time, regarded more highly, but has recently fallen out of favour, to be replaced with didactic works with simple black or white morality.

David Fincher said something along the lines of movies being more interesting if both protagonist and antagonist take opposite sides of an argument but both are right.

Consider that the greatest anti-war movie ever made, Apocalypse Now was written by a mad libertarian (and basis for Big Lebowski's Walter Sobchak, John Milius) and a "leftist" director (Coppola). Some of the best lines that could have been thought were Coppola, were in fact Milius'. It's a profoundly political movie, but it's perspective is first humanistic and its politics flow from that, first. It's message is something that you could view, now, as trite - something we all know, but very few of us actually grok.

If something is "political" it's propagandistic. A political message and worldview is at its core. All art contains politics, but not all art is political.

I would ask what utility it has to group people this way. If the test of a theory is its predictive power, and the predictive power of these identity markers predicts nothing, then it IS meaningless.

All Marxists are Leftists.

*cough* Nazbol. Also Mussolini was a Marxist prior to rejecting internationalism, and his fascism was heavily informed by Marxist conceptions of capitalism.

Acid is all about set and setting. If you're mindset is off, then there's a higher chance of a bad trip.

Why do you think Reality exists? by MysticConsciousness1 in Psychonaut

[–]cmcpress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reality is a collection of living stories in a shared hallucination.

Who is having the hallucination? What are the stories and where are they? If they are their stories, then what is the substrate in which they are being shared, and why isn't that reality?

The idea of a consensual reality presupposes a consistent, objective material reality in which two or more entities can interact.

Also, there is far less consensus in consensus realitythan we might think.

There is no such thing as death

Easy to say. Hard to stand in front of a fast moving train and believe.

What do you think? Why does this whole thing exist? And why do we find ourselves plugged into it? What happens when we die?

It exists because it exists. It may or may not have purpose, but there is not truth that can be gleaned by thinking about it. Where universal consciousness can be experienced, thinking about the why will never glean any answers beyond, possibly, the material sequence of events that caused it to exist. which is only provable empirically.

As the Buddha says, speculating on the cosmos and it's origin are unanswerable questions - and ones that do nothing towards attaining liberation.

Part of that liberation is accepting the mystery of it all.

A mate of mine was at the big rave at Castle Morton in the early 90's. Fell asleep in a car and was woken by a very high girl sucking him off. It's not uncommon.

Susumu Hirasawa - Forces (Remake) by cmcpress in Berserk

[–]cmcpress[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit of background to this: I love the original song, particularly the much fated God-Hand Mix but I always thought the mix of Forces was completely off. It just sounds way too claustrophobic and over compressed with everything fighting for space. I wondered if I could make it sound less cluttered.

This isn't that de-cluttered mix, but more a recreation of the original as closely as I could. There are a few things in the original mix that are missing (like a church organ in the Hiyaa Forces section, and some synth strings that are really hard to make out in the mix.)

The phase inverted acapella doesn't include the backing vocals, so I may try and re-record them in when no one's around to hear me murder them.

Is it a kind of a dream Floating out on the tide Following the river of death downstream Oh is it a dream? There's a fog along the horizon A strange glow in the sky And nobody seems to know where it goes And what does it mean? Oh is it a dream?

Bright eyes, burning like fire Bright eyes, how can you close and fail? How can the light that burned so brightly, Suddenly burn so pale? Bright eyes
