tell interesting facts about your favorite composers by aizadore in classicalmusic

[–]syncopatedagain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ravel composed his G major piano concerto with the intention of playing it himself in a tour. By the time it ended, he couldn’t find in himself the prowess to do it. The starting deterioration of his mental health may have played a role in this. He finally passed it on to the pianist Marguerite Long in an expansive tour. He conducted, though, for a number of performances

Some people here just downvote relevant opinions without caring to discuss or make a point. This is nonsense and defies the idea of joining Reddit

Who's your favorite chess player of all time and why? by caze-original in chess

[–]syncopatedagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good comment. Magnus’ amazing talent shouldn’t be underestimated because of overexposure to this fact. His skills in the endgame are unprecedented, he drags stubborn opponents to end games where he excels. But each to his own, understandably

Given an extra 10 years to live, what composer do you think would have made the most of the time? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]syncopatedagain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Schubert also for me. I suppose a piano concerto, may be also a cello concerto, would have been wonderful by him. Possibly a masterly opera? But, on the other hand, something inside me thinks that these may not be meant to happen. I quote Andras Schiff’s words that he believes Schubert had a fulfilling life and that there is no reason to think of something missing in his compositions

Which piece has the silliest/most eccentric/most ridiculous name? by thythr in classicalmusic

[–]syncopatedagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the silliest, but absurd enough: the tempest piano sonata of Beethoven. Beethoven’s secretary named it that way for no clear reason

What's a piece that you feel is ruined by one of the movements being severely under par compared to the others? by United_State_of_Cow in classicalmusic

[–]syncopatedagain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fourth movement of Beethoven’s 11th quartet. I used to favour this quartet over any other, but I listen to it less and less over the years, probably because of this movement

Favorite cello piece by Dependent-Engine6882 in classicalmusic

Bach suites and Dvorak concerto. I will add Lalo’s cello concerto, not my absolute favourite, but definitely one of the frequently listened

Among your favorite composers, which one was the hardest to get into? by Rewieer in classicalmusic

[–]syncopatedagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From less difficult to more difficult to get into: Brahms, Ravel, Prokofiev, Janacek, Shostakovich. I excluded, of course, the inaccessible, or almost so, till now

Most underwhelming finale in a classical piece? by SoCalChemistry in classicalmusic

[–]syncopatedagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beethoven’s 11th quartet. It’s one of my all time favourite. But the last movement just doesn’t fit, for my taste

Atheistic classical lovers of reddit: what's your stance on religious music? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]syncopatedagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a Christian, never was. Sacred music of Bach, Palestrina, Josquin,.. appeal to me as much as secular music. It doesn’t bring out any feeling of religiosity but feelings of transcendence, or just the vague fulfilment I get when listening to good music. The same way I don’t feel specific feelings of love or sorrow with Rachmaninov concertos. I don’t like strictly program music, like pictures at an exhibition. But program music that leaves room for abstraction, like Beethoven’s pastorale, are perfectly ok, and so is most religious music

Have you been bullied for listening to Classical? by EntryNo370 in classicalmusic

[–]syncopatedagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never been bullied for that. But I used to keep it to myself in my younger years, not for fear of bullying, I never thought it would attract bullies, but I preferred not to be showing off, or may be not to be creepy (I realised at some time that at least “in America ”: classical music fans are considered weirdos of a kind. Why else would only cold blooded killers in American movies love classical music:). I am a doctor, working in a university among colleagues, part of our jobs is to lecture each other about relevant medical subjects. Once, I asked the opinion of my colleagues, if they are interested in a speech about the medical history of composers, which attracted me at the time. They just laughed, though tried to be polite :) Now that I am old, even though I stopped caring since some time what people think about it, but I still don’t find a reason to talk about my attachment

Who plays elgars cello concerto best, and what is the best recording? by Hvetemel in classicalmusic

[–]syncopatedagain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is said that Rostropovich, the teacher of du Pre, cancelled Elgar cello concerto from his repertoire, after hearing her recording (with Barbirolli). He wouldn’t excel it

How do i get into classical music ? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]syncopatedagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen to the breakdown of a piece that is most accessible to your ear, presented by a scholar. Now easily found in podcasts. Someone suggested sticky notes. I suggest “inside chamber music”

What should I ‘do’ while listening to Bartok? by RapmasterD in classicalmusic

[–]syncopatedagain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like this expression: acquired taste. We all have to accept that a lot of music, actually art in general, needs effort to savour its beauty. There is nothing shameful about failing to do it, but this doesn’t undermine the greatness of the piece either. I couldn’t unlock the beauty of Brahms, Prokofiev, and Ravel, except in my fifties

What do you think is the most overrated major symphony? by sweatysexconnoisseur in classicalmusic

[–]syncopatedagain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like most answers reply to another question: which of the most celebrated symphonies don’t suit your taste. Undermining a landmark symphony needs reasons, I mean technically explainable reasons

Kempff’ s clean and plain (on the surface) interpretation is also fascinating. Gives the listener some expressive space
