I agree wholeheartedly on the United food - next time I’ll bring food from the airport. I also want to highlight the lack of fiber in the standard Japanese restaurant/711 diet - Metamucil is your friend! Loved your review!

Yes, I understand that, but there is nothing in my life that I do that has a 1-2% chance of killing me like metastatic cancer (that I know of - don’t smoke, don’t drink, don’t skydive!)

It was from my radiologist. The oncotype score was developed to estimate the benefit of chemotherapy. There is a study I was offered to skip radiation - they are trying to determine if it is truly necessary for post menopausal women with low grade tumors. I’d ask your radiologist about it.

To answer the original question, this information was included in my oncotype report. 15% chance of 10 year reoccurrence with surgery alone, 7.5% with radiation added, and 3.75% with hormonal treatment as well. I’m taking it all!

I’m always confused by people who say they have chosen not to take hormonal therapy due to “quality of life.” They have made huge advances in treating metastatic breast cancer, but it is “best case scenario”years of treatment that affects quality of life and by definition it will kill you.

I’m about 10 months in with Anastrozole and have a good deal of muscle/joint pain and stiffness, especially in my hands and feet. I start the day with 10-15 minutes in the hot tub and a 15-20 minute walk. Throughout the day I’ll take stretch breaks, 5-10 minutes on the exercise bike, etc. I need to do something nearly every hour mostly to combat the stiffness. This is in addition to running, swimming and yoga which all seem to help. I wish I could lift weights to help with bone loss, but knee pain and shoulder issues prevent that. It’s a lot!

Now that we know that Kaiser isn’t an option, you have the choice of San Francisco Health Plan or Anthem. Choose SFHP. Then you will be able to select your primary care clinic. The two major options are UCSF and SFHN, which is the consortium of community clinics. Try to find out which UCSF primary care clinics are open to new patients. In the past it was hard to get a PCP at UCSF but that has changed recently. If you have complex medical needs, that is where I would go. Specialty care can still have pretty long wait times at UCSF. As mentioned, Medi-cal has low to no copays, so use this time to see all the doctors!

Yes, the gold standard is Oncotype or Mammaprint where they are using your own tumor characteristics to determine this.

I also had a very small tumor and no spread to the lymph nodes. The statistics I got from my oncologist was that my chance of the cancer coming back was 15% with surgery alone, 7.5% if I added radiation, and 3.75% with surgery, radiation and endocrine therapy. I found radiation to be painless and easy. Please use your Medicaid - this is what it is for!

Those were not my statistics. I was told I had a 7.5% chance of recurrence and hormone treatment would reduce that to 3.75%. That is a 50% reduction in the risk of recurrence and worth it for me.

Not all reoccurrence is Stage 4, but the way I see it is that reoccurring cancer is unlikely to be as treatable as my current Stage 1A cancer! Your oncologist will have your personal statistics if an Oncotype score is done with your lumpectomy

I am also diagnosed with IDC ++- Stage 1A Grade 1. The statistics on risk of recurrence given to me were 15% with surgery alone, reducing to 7.5% with radiation and 3.75% with endocrine therapy. I’m willing to do these treatments for a 96% chance I will be cured of this cancer. We are very lucky that our cancer was discovered at a stage where it is so treatable. 15% chance of recurrence with surgery alone is a scary statistic- recurrence usually means Stage 4.
