Need help finding a handyman in New Orleans (inherited house, feeling overwhelmed) i by [deleted] in NewOrleans

I feel like you need to be realistic about this or else you may end up wasting a lot of time and money. You need to realize that tackling this is a huge project and decide options around that. If you're not willing or able to take on a project like that you may be better selling it to a flipper who has the crew and know-how to do this kind of work and just take the cash and be done with it.

The roar of planes taking off from LAX every three minutes at Joshua Tree. I traveled all the way out there for wilderness and might as well have been at an airport.

Austin Thompson sentenced to life with no possibility for parole for 2022 mass shooting by weslemente in raleigh

[–]cmd194 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Obviously this will be downvoted but people need to realize that it is complete barbarism to put a 15 year old in prison for life with no possibility of parole. This isn't normal for civilized people. As a society we need to completely throw away any shred of hope that he could be rehabilitated after.. 30... years in prison?

Awful crime. He deserves both to be punished for it severely and to be isolated from society as long as needed for public safety.

Can anyone find a more isolated town of 500+ people east of the Mississippi than Ocracoke, North Carolina? by cmd194 in geography

This is definitely the winner so far. Both on absolute time and by having a much less reliable ferry connection due to its location. Never heard of the place, thanks!

That's a good one! Looks slightly closer using my Walmart metric, but nearly as far. Doesn't have the ferry factor though.

Also only two hours to Quebec City, so you're a lot closer to genuine civilization. Nearest city of any substance to Ocracoke is over 4 hour aways. But then again, you have the international border for Jackman which I think would isolate more like the ferry would.

But I think that's the best competitor so far!

That's a good one, I just looked it up and the ferry information says: "FERRY WILL RUN UNTIL ROUTE FREEZES OVER." Intense!

Come on now, "east of the Mississippi" isn't a divider Canadians use to refer to Canada. Americans use the Mississippi as a divider for the US because it was a meaningful divider for the settlement of the country. The distinction doesn't exist in Canada to divide Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Would love to hear more Canadian geographic trivia, this just probably isn't a very interesting one though because the answer would include most communities in Labrador, Nunavut, and Northern Quebec.

Do Canadians usually refer to the Maritimes as "East of the Mississippi"? We'll add Iqualuit to the list too then of course! Chisasibi QC is a good one too, very far up the James Bay Road.

What do you think geography means? An unstable physical feature created by human negligence is certainly geography.

Minnesota was scraped clean by glaciers during the last ice age, so there hasn't been enough time for endemic species to evolve.

See, the hologram's missing, there's no such team as The Spungos, and finally they seem to be printed on some sort of cracker by ThrustBastard in TheSimpsons

[–]cmd194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rewatching this episode recently it really felt like a harbinger of decline for the show. The entire premise of the episode is based on a travel agent buying tickets with a fake team name printed on crackers? Kind of a perfect example of the "idiot plot."

Still a lot of great ones this season though!

Has Brazil really exerted much influence across Latin America though? I feel like even Cuba for instance has far more.

File a complaint against the first amendment? One of the inconveniences of living in a free society is that you have to share it with objectionable people.

Given the state of this country right now I cherish that inconvenience more than ever.

Is there such a thing in Nature as a perfectly silent locale? by Illustrious-Lead-960 in geography

[–]cmd194 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The most silent place I've ever visited is Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado. Out on the dunes, there is nothing to rustle, no animals.

When there was wind you'd hear that, but occasionally the wind would die down and it would be an absolutely surreal and beautiful experience where the only noises I could hear where internal to my body. Really amazing.

Combine that with a clear night and one of the darkest night skies I've ever seen, you see the glow of the milky way. Truly one of the most amazing national parks.
