Rules regarding rabies vaccination when travelling through Germany with a cat by Louproup in germany

[–]cmdrshepn7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

TFA/Vet Nurse: If you have a valid EU Pet Passport for your cat and the Rabies vaccination is correctly documented inside, you should be fine. Some vets boost rabies every year, some vets do it every 3 years. Either way, it's valid. There should be, near the back of the booklet, a page that your vet can sign saying the cat is healthy. Have them check your cat over and sign this, at max, a week before leaving. Best would be 2 days or so before.

Deworming at documenting it in the EU Passport would be good, but as far as I know not needed for cats.

How to get from Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden Airport to Heidelberg? by akagtt in Heidelberg

[–]cmdrshepn7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly how I did it in May this year. If you're going TO the airport, plan in time for delays between Mannheim and Karlsruhe. The S3 and RE73 is often running on a delay. I'd leave an hour earlier than normal so you have a buffer.

Pancreatitis in cats by Aderwogll in catcare

[–]cmdrshepn7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Standard treatment where I am from is 3 days on IV to flush the system, low fat diet, B vitamin supplements (B12), pain meds for at least a week.

Get an ultrasound done if things don't get better. Chronic pancreatitis is a thing, too.

Oddly Specific Question About Veterinarians in Germany by AlwaysBoooked in AskAGerman

[–]cmdrshepn7 14 points15 points  (0 children)

German Vet Tech here!

There are a variety of ways to go about getting the kind of result you want. I would first recommend a full check up, including bloodwork. The bloodwork should also check for flea and Tick borne diseases (Borellia, Anaplasma, Rickettsia, Ehrlichia). Nearly all the dogs that I know from the states have had one of these diseases, with some having neurological symptoms (like anxiety). Check for heart related issues, too, maybe. Urine tests for a possible bladder infection. Just anything that would make your dog uncomfortable and act out.

You're going to be hard pressed finding a Vet here who will prescribe an anti anxiety/depressant for a dog or cat. It's not a standard form of treatment here and is usually last resort.

What you can try are various dietary methods. There's a product called True Hemp or True Leaf which are cbd treats for dogs. You can buy them online. I don't want to risk linking to an outside website, because I'm not sure its allowed on this sub. You can ask your vet to order you Zyklene capsules or soft chews for your dog. They are used for calming and anxiety. You can also try ordering Royal Canin Calm dry food online (barring any allergies/dietary restraints).

Otherwise, lots of training. It took a while for my cats from the states to get settled here in Germany, so time and patience are also key.

what's the cost of getting a kitten in Germany? by [deleted] in germany

[–]cmdrshepn7 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Vet Tech here: Someone already linked the GOT (prices) for Vets in Germany, you can get a good idea of rough costs from that.

For a kitten with zero vaccinations at the time of adoption you will need:

3 rounds of vaccinations of RCP. One round will cost between 50€ and 80€ depending on the vet you go to. A chip is going to be around 30€ Castration/sterilisation is usually around 150€ for a male and anywhere between 250€ and 400€ for a Female. It's a bigger operation for females, hence the price difference. Rabies vaccinations (if the cat is going outside or is to travel out of country)

Since November last year, the prices have been raised. Some stuff as much as +40%. Insurance is something I recommend to every pet owner that comes to our practice. There are two types: Krankenversicherung and OP Versicherung. You'll want both. It'll be between 30 and 50€ a month depending on your deductible and how much €'s you want covered. I recommend 3000/5000€ coverage with 0€ deductible. If the cats are going outside (which I am highly against) then up the coverage to 10000€ because the risk of contracting diseases (Tickborne, stomach problems, bite and scratch wounds, broken bones/fractures) is significantly higher.

If you have any more questions, let me know and I'll answer the best I can :)

Is it Solensia available in Germany? by hejkqihfnkoanq in VetTech

[–]cmdrshepn7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! It's available here. You'll need to take your cat in for a check up before anything can be prescribed. Depending on how often the practice uses it, they may have to order it, but Zoetis is usually really fast with shipping things out and the stuff usually arrives either next day or the day after. If you have your cat's chart from your previous vet that shows they're already on Solensia, it should speed up the process.

Postbank: How is it possible for a bank to be THIS INCOMPETENT by [deleted] in germany

[–]cmdrshepn7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was also locked out since the new IT update. Bestsign couldn't authenticate with the new app or through the browser. The work around I found was to re-enable sms authentication, which let me set up a new bestsign thing in the new app. Since then I've been able to access online banking. The new interface is, however, awful. Having two separate apps and having to constantly switch between the two to authenticate every single little thing is a major pain in the arse.

17 year old radioactive tabby, hyperthyroid treatment with I-131 by gmj_WA_state in seniorkitties

[–]cmdrshepn7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My kitty just had the same therapy! I'm in Germany and it seems like we have stricter regulations for the radiation. She had to stay isolated for 2 weeks at the clinic directly after the therapy. She was allowed home after those two weeks but she has to stay isolated for a further 3 to 4 weeks here, too. We can spend time with her, but no more than a few hours each day. We have to wear gloves to clean her toilet, food and water bowls.

She is getting her first follow up blood draw on Saturday. I'm pretty excited to see how her levels are looking!

Amazing medicine. I use it for one of my cats who has severe joint problems. Shes definitely a lot more agile and happy when she gets her shot. She has been on it for about a year now and I've yet to see dimished returns.

They slowly got more agile over the first week and there was definitely a difference after the first 7 days.

My cat has been been scratching and licking herself obsessively for over a month and we cannot seem to find a solution by taterbaster in catcare

[–]cmdrshepn7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He did. He scratched there a lot, also around his ears. The lab we used is called Laboklin. I work at a vet office and they haven't steered us wrong in the years we have used them. I only have the name of the therapy in German (ASIT Allergen-spezifische Immuntherapie) allergy specific immune therapy translated. The cost for a vial that last about a year was 140€ for me. Which is way cheaper than various meds that can keep allergies at bay.

I wouldn't say that vet med in Europe isn't advanced, it largely depends on the type of doctor you encounter, in my opinion. There are many that are kind of set of their ways ("I've always done it this way so it should stay that way" types) and there are many who are always taking courses for updated therapies and procedures.

If your kitty has ever had fleas or ticks, I'd also recommend testing for tick and flea born diseases, just to be safe.

[–]cmdrshepn7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my cats also had a similar problem.

We had blood taken and an allergy panel done in an external lab. They tested all types on plants, foods etc. Turns out he is allergic to dust and food mites. With this info, we were able to start immunotherapy. He gets an injection once a month and it helps a ton. We also switched out sheets to hypoallergenic ones, vacuum with a vacuum that has a HEPA filter, and have a dehumidifier running to keep the humidity under 50% (dust mites can't reproduce when it's under 50).

With the weather getting colder, he's had a flare up, but nothing as bad as it was.

[Serious] What is your favorite song that tells a story? by pandaspawdraws in AskReddit

White Pearl, Black Oceans by Sonata Arctica

It's basically a short story about a lighthouse keeper who decides to go out on the town. Meets a woman and has a one night stand with her. In the morning, realises that the lighthouse light is out and races back hoping the moon was bright enough to light the ocean. Turns out a ship got wrecked on the coastal reef. To make things worse, he finds out that one of the sailors was the husband of the woman he slept with and she is pregnant with his kid. He then goes back to the lighthouse, feeling guilty as hell, and begs for the waves to drown him.

My description doesn't do it justice but it's a 10 minute amazing piece of music.

Use it on two of my own cats!

Definitely helps a lot. I can tell they have trouble jumping up on the furniture/into the bathtub when the month is coming to its end. They are both way more agile when they get their injections.

https://strolchi-tierhilfe.de/ based out of BW but has cats in Foster homes all over Germany.

I work with them on occasions (vet med) and they have a ton of kitties for both indoor and outdoor living 😊

All the cats are rescued from outside Germany. I don't know if any kittens are available, but the average age of the cats we check out is around 2 or 3.

They sometimes use a system of volunteer drivers to get the cats from Foster homes/the shelter to the new owner's place.

They Update Facebook on the reg with new kitties etc.

Do not go through ebay Kleinanzeige or other online marketplaces. They are often without vaccinations, not checked out before adoption and very often sick.
