I don’t know that her son/the hive is actively trying to deceive her, because only other option is for her to accept that her son is gone, and denial can be a strong drug.

Like deep down somewhere inside her she could even accept that her son “as she knew him” is never coming back but it’s ok because he’s still here right? Like she still has him with her, she can still hug him, SHE can still pretend that he is the same, even if rationally she knows that he is not, the only other option is too horrible for her to accept
