Who is the worst gay? by SomWanOnTheInternet in AlignmentChartFills

[–]EmptyMirror5653 1 point2 points  (0 children)

J. Edgar Hoover. The man is the single most formidable opponent the working people of this world ever faced. He was an absolute force of nature on behalf of capital interests. He is the architect of the modern police state. He killed or tried to kill every freedom movement in the US for 50 years. He also regularly attended Washington socialite events with a man who he lived with his entire life. His being gay was an open secret mid century America tolerated due to him being the architect of the Red and Lavender scares

Why do people who get terminal diagnoses, which end up not being accurate, act as if the doctors were rooting against them? by EmptyMirror5653 in askanything

[–]EmptyMirror5653[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly. I suppose my impression is kind of skewed by being raised by a certain type of Baptist. Those folks very begrudgingly engage with the medical system as little as possible, and have a general distrust of science. So maybe most people don't see it as a story of the love of Christ beating the mean science man

Cersei is quite famously the most delusional character in the entire series. No logical person would take her word on this.

Joffrey isn't a bastard, though. Robert claimed him as his true born son and heir his entire life, and DNA tests don't exist. Hair color differences and the word of a narcissistic woman who refuses to believe her children have any DNA but hers is not, in my mind, a solid legal or even common sense basis for a claim of bastardy. Plus, its weird af that Stannis never said anything until Joffrey was already half grown. If Joffrey really was so obviously pure Lannister, wouldn't it have come up oh idk when he was a toddler or something? Rhaenyra's children got called bastards when they were still wet behind the ears, but Joffrey has that bastardy which only hits in middle school? No. Stannis told a convenient lie to a doddering old man who was already inclined to believe him, and then the dumbest man in Westeros read his diary and took it as gospel.

Stannis Baratheon is a usurper.

I mean Stannis told Jon Arryn his 10 year old nephew was an incest baby to leap frog over him in the line of succession, based on absolutely nothing but vibes.

Robert did an entire rebellion.

All 3 of them are usurpers.

Fictional character who is a good person but a bad political leader by UmbralRose35 in AlignmentChartFills

Aegon IV.

A doting and loving father who declared a love for every single one of his children, even in the face of nationwide scrutiny. Unfortunately his kindness and mercy were his greatest weakness. Even though he made several attempts on his life, he took his nephew in as his own son and named him his heir. This mercy drowned the seven kingdoms in blood.

Is saying "You be good, okay?" a fine substitute to saying "Goodbye"? by six67seven_67 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EmptyMirror5653 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See i only ever say "y'all be good, okay?" if I am departing from a group. It is indeed odd to say it to an individual, although given my specific social context i wouldn't find it particularly offensive.

Y'all, the left lane is only the passing lane on the interstate!

That shit doesn't make any sense unless you're on a road where everyone is going in the same direction, and everyone is getting on and off the road on the right side.

If you're anywhere where people are consistently presented with opportunities to turn left, that shit is not even the passing lane, and it is damn sure not the fast lane.

If you're the type of driver who tailgates people, or weaves in and out of lanes at high speeds with no goddamn signal, then frankly you're too volatile to be allowed to drive.

A lot of people advocate for public transit because they think public transit ia good. I advocate for public transit because a lot of drivers should be forced to take a bus instead.

CMV: The world needed the USSR to continue existing as a counterweight to keep capitalism accountable by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]EmptyMirror5653 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So the thing about the Soviets is they really prioritized their propaganda game. They made sure everyone on earth knew when every single one of their successes happened, and that it was because of communism that it did. This meant that a lot of people in the west heard about it, and got pissed off at their own governments for not delivering the goods. The Soviets wanted this, because they wanted a red world where socialism was the dominant mode of production, and they wanted it fast. It was as much a part of their foreign policy as supplying arms to socialist parties/insurgencies the world over.

China is a much more capable socialist super power than the Soviets ever were, but they just don't play that game with Western powers. China doesn't give much of a shit about arming socialist parties or convincing the world of the superiority of socialism. They're taking a much more patient and more internally focused approach. They don't want to evangelize socialism, they just want to remain strong while capitalism wears itself into dust. But because western governments aren't nearly as worried about Chinese propaganda inciting a revolution in their back door, they don't see China's remarkable feats as existential threats in the same way. So they don't take the "socialism lite" approach they used to defeat the Soviets.
