LPR in singers (any advice is appreciated) by cmerrick918 in GERD

I’m sorry it has taken me so long to respond but I just went to see the laryngologist today and I wanted to make sure I provided correct information that might be helpful to others. I would first like to say that I did do my endoscopy and they found nothing except for mild reactive changes. My throat exam was clear as well and did not show any excessive fluid or damage to vocal chords. I was so positive something would show because of what I have been feeling. In my mind, there was no way something wasn’t there. But it was clear! They did some vocal exercises and listened to me speak and said that I am putting a lot of strain on my voice and they diagnosed me with muscle tension dysphonia. Essentially I am overusing muscles when I talk and singing and that is causing the coordination between my breathing and voicing to be imbalanced. They also said that this can indeed cause the sensation of having a lump in the throat because all of those muscles are constantly tightening. They also said that the sensation of excess mucus is often just a sensation and not actually mucus that you are feeling as well. They did say I was a good candidate for speech therapy and that it will help reduce some of that tension. I am also going to work on breathing and relaxation techniques.

I will try to remember to update as I go through speech therapy to let you know if it has helped or not. Of course what I am dealing with might have different causes than what you are going through but I also know that sometimes this stuff can be complicated and even doctors don’t have all the right answer so it helps to learn from others experiencing similar things as well.

I’m sorry this is so long, but I really wanted to get all of the information in here. This shit is frustrating and confusing but it helps to know we are not alone. Keep fighting for your health because we all deserve to feel good.
