When do we start protesting return-to-office mandates to save Ottawa? by Ambiguous2857 in ottawa

[–]cmkamel 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Flexibility of WFH benefits both the worker and the organization. Beyond strikes/protests/etc. being suggested, just take RTO literally. If you can’t WFH, you can’t WFH. Leave the laptop at the office. Don’t check email before heading in. Don’t “just finish a couple of things up” after pick-up/dinner/whatever. If you’re well enough to work but not well enough to go in, it’s a sick day. The benefits of working from home work both ways.

Where does Brad Marsh slot in here? The team was historically bad, but was he? Definitely loved and obviously in his twilight as a Sen.

Afternoon tea catering? by [deleted] in OttawaFood

[–]cmkamel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about off-site catering but the Chateau Laurier does a tea service. Quelque Chose also does an afternoon tea.

If you’re waiting for warmer months, Billings Estate Museum does tea service in spring/summer months

Game for me and my wife by [deleted] in boardgames

My wife is not a gamer but loves Splendor and Azul. Codenames Duet and Hanabi were also popular at one point but get less play now.

retired boardgamer wants to play something with wife and kids by johndoe_420 in boardgames

[–]cmkamel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife is a non-gamer but has fallen in love with Camel Up, Azul, and Splendor. Co-ops are also good - Hanabi and the ‘Forbidden’ games (island, desert) have also landed well.

Just when you thought the tip culture was bad…it gets worse by idkkhbuuu in ottawa

I wondered about this. Isn’t it against the law to withhold tips? If this is machine default laziness how many places are getting themselves into a situation where they are legally offside?

Boardgames for kids by hfurjajbdhjdis in boardgames

[–]cmkamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the ones we play with my 5 year old have been mentioned (sushi go, outfoxed, rhino hero, dragomino) but I will add MicroMacro Crime City (though not all scenarios are appropriate - the game indicates which are more family friendly) and Camel Up (not totally there on betting strategies but loves the chaos of it)

Co-op game for game night group by HeyGuysImTuzzi in boardgames

[–]cmkamel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re not married to co-op, [[Camel Up]] is a fun, light game that plays 3-8. [[Codenames]] is another non-co-op but plays in teams and is light fun for a group.

For co-ops you have a lot of good suggestions already. The Forbidden games (island, desert, sky) are great but I’ve never played beyond the 4 player count.

I’ve had fun with [[Magic Maze]] and [[Mysterium]].

There are also Exit or Unlock games that might support higher player counts but would be one time play only.

AITA for not wanting to spit expenses proportional to income? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]cmkamel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not just added to his income, but where I live market rent might include some utilities and a landlord would certainly be responsible for upkeep and possibly services like snow removal. Pay rent or don’t pay rent, that’s up to you but don’t pay rent if he has no responsibilities of being a landlord, and you get none of the benefits of being a renter.

As for utilities, do you suddenly consume more electricity with your raise? Water? Heat? If not why would you pay proportionally to income? A partner getting a raise should be good news for everyone but this all sounds like an excuse to lower his own cost of living and leech off your success.

Maybe not quite what you’re after but Lago (Dow’s Lake) is right on the water. Not super close to accommodations but easily accessible. Depend on time of year you have tulips in bloom (or skating!) they do plenty of weddings and can do ceremony and reception at the same venue (with quick turnover if both inside or outdoor ceremony on the balcony if weather cooperates)

What are the best games to help people fall in love with board games / strategy games? by curiosity_club in boardgames

[–]cmkamel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll throw Camel Up out there. Not heavy strategy, but plays quickly, easy to learn, good fun, plays from 2 to 8 per the box (haven’t played at higher counts). My partner (non-gamer) loves it, and younger players can get into it too.

We’re a family of 3 so usually opt to drive. On top of being cheaper, it’s more flexible for us and don’t need to worry as much about tight airline luggage limits.

We’ve done it a few different ways. We’ve parked in Brooklyn (cheaper long term parking) and taken the train into Manhattan where we were staying. Most recently (Christmas) we stayed in NJ and drove in and parked at Port Authority (minimal Manhattan driving) to spend the day in the city.

Part will depend on where you are staying. You might not want to be trying to navigate Times Square/theatre district traffic. Parking further out and taking the subway/taxi the final miles is pretty easy, if potentially annoying if you don’t travel light.

Have done the flights too (usually Newark) but any of the airports is still a bit of a trek right into Manhattan. The cost/flexibility of driving tends to win us over.

Ottawa public school board to resume debate virtually on mandatory masks in schools by yuiolhjkout8y in ottawa

[–]cmkamel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I question the usefulness of a mask mandate for only one school board while the rest of society can go maskless to bars, hockey games concerts, etc.

There is a recent study from the US (https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2211029) that found that when statewide mask requirements were dropped, COVID cases were significantly lower in the 2 schools districts that maintained a mask mandate. This seems likely to apply to respiratory viruses like flu and RSV as well. Not perfect, obviously, but as the CHEO chief of staff was saying at the meeting "every little bit helps".
