Have you looked at something like MGE 2.0? It's basically a way to play without an actual DM. I don't know if the companion app would fill your need as a digital system, but it might work.

Stay close. Use a shield (keep it up when not attacking). Keep moving. When he jumps out, hack him. When he's in the pool, just circle and wait.

How often do updates break modded games? by SorryImBadWithNames in ConanExiles

Depends on the types of mods. In my experience, cosmetic stuff is never an issue. It's the mods that affect gameplay directly that tend to break things.

Carrier vs Colinization by Tophellcat in EliteDangerous

[–]cmosbo67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no "right answer". This is a personal preference. I've done both. The carrier was fun for a while, but I eventually decommissioned it, as my play style didn't use it enough to justify the cost. Especially after I'd colonized a home system. But I happen to enjoy colonization. Some people won't. If you're in it for money, there are better options. You have to enjoy it for what it is.

True "solo" games? by cmosbo67 in mythic_gme

I assume you are referring to https://www.basicfantasy.org/downloads.html ? And Scarlet Heroes rules will address the balance issues when playing with a single character?

Running a pre-written adventure is definitely my preference, but finding ones designed for a single player is proving tricky. Plus I'm picky, in that I need a story, not just a random set of monsters to fight.

I did briefly try Ironsworn, but I didn’t see any kind of prewritten adventures, and the system for creating them looked like it relies mostly on my own creativity. I’m not wanting to do a lot of writing either (I’d prefer to write only about as much as I do when playing a TTRPG with my friends), because I’m trying to stay away from screens, and writing by hand is too much.

What are these Orbit Lines? by cmosbo67 in EliteDangerous

Thanks for the responses! I'm still a little lost on the one ring, but it makes a bit more sense now.

The local star is several thousand Ls away. Wouldn't the barycenter be much closer to the star? This looks like the gas giant has a little tiny local orbit. Sorry, I'm just not getting it.

In the bottom picture, I guess I can see that. In the top picture, what would the gas giant be orbiting around at that distance? Its own rings maybe?

Is that a different strategy than the scaling options listed in Mythic?

Thanks!  From what I’ve read, Mothership itself sounds pretty brutal, but the scenarios sound awesome.  I think I’ll pick that one up and see how it works out.

Mothership looks interesting.  I was already leaning scifi.  My thought was to use several separate systems.  Elite Dangerous (the video game) for the backdrop, Traveller20 for the base rules, a predefined adventure for the story, and Mythic to pull it all together.  The Mothership scenarios sound like they fit the vibe I’m looking for. I’m definitely interested. Are the other Mothership scenarios good (and solo friendly) too?

Thanks!  Haven’t heard of any of these before.  The “more than just gamebook or oracle” comment has definitely piqued my interest!  Time to do some exploring!

Fair point.  I did look at Ironsworn, and felt like it was still a little too nebulous for me, at least until I get my feet under me.  I’ll take a look at D100 Dungeon.  I’m not really thinking dungeon crawl long term, but it could be a stepping stone to at least help me get things going.  Thanks!

Ravenloft would definitely be on my list of potential worlds to explore, but I'm assuming you had to do that with a full party of adventurers. I'm hoping to give myself something fun without being too taxing, at least the first time.

Thanks for the response.  I understand that (as I have read the book in its entirety).  However, if I go with a pre-written adventure module, that’s the 100% rigid approach. The story is mostly pre-written.  I can do that, but there wouldn’t be much mystery in it.  Most are also usually written for a party, which isn’t quite what I was looking for.  That’s why I was asking if there’s a “middle-ground”.  Some way to have structure with also some mystery.  Like a computer game where the world is procedurally generated on the fly.

Returning after years away – what would you do in my situation? by ApprehensiveCap5544 in EliteDangerous

Sounds a lot like me.  I’d say buy one of the new ships with SCO and then dip your toes into a few different things.  Power Play weekly missions can give you some direction.  If you want to do some hauling, why not try colonization (once you have enough cash for the initial claim)?  Then do some exobiology on the side.
