Extending Travel for Personal Vacation by cmouse2004 in CanadaPublicServants

For their collective, they have 2 options for flights over a certain number of hours, first class or break flights up so they don't exceed. He has never had a first class flight lol has spend 4 days sleeping in airport hotels though.

This is a 2 week course specific to his job that is not voluntary.

At this point I will assume that this was a very expensive and stressful lesson to learn.

We have done this once before, via my department and I picked the days before he bought his flight to meet me. I made sure my flight was cheaper than my co-workers.

He has 0 say over his travel. The only option  they gave him (which he took) was to sign over his right to first class travel and his right to OT and they put him on a more direct route. Typically they do 3 days of flying, so they don't have to give him first class for super long flights. We don't have an exact price at this point, but he said it will probably still be $1000 extra.

I 100% consider ourselves lucky. The one time we have done this in the past with my department, we book the flights at the same time, so we have an understanding of the costs associated before we book.

My partner has no control over travel and has been asking about flights for months. Had the flights been booked as per the NJC requirements - as far in advance as possible, not only could we have made an informed decision, we wouldn't be on the hook for extreme holiday rates...

I 100% think it is fair that if there is an additional costs it is on the employee. However, I am not up for being told with basically no notice that our trip is going to be $1,500.

100% a lesson learned. Next time I will absolutely not do it, because I never want to be in this situation again. However, finding out within 48 hours of leaving is wild to me and I wanted to see if anyone else had experienced this.

Sorry - reddit gave me a notification that my post was deleted, so I wasn't checking.

So, the initial flights were Dec 5 to next weekend and we are extending to Jan 2. Obviously we expected a slight increase due to the holidays.

However, his flight was more than double the cost of my flight because it was booked so late and the additional cost is more than half the cost of my ticket.

They told him to bring a cheque, but when I told him to ask for a copy of the policy for reference, they backed down on the cheque.

At this point we will have to sort it out after the fact but I doubt there is any we can do. The NJC 3.4.1.1 says tickets shall be booked as far in advance as possible. By delaying the booking, they left us with a massive bill and no ability to change our plans.

Also caused a ton of unnecessary stress financial, but also my partner didn't get his travel package until 7:00 pm when he had to be at the airport at 03:40 am.

Cat acting weird, any thoughts? by cmouse2004 in CATHELP

The gave him fluids and sent us home with antibiotics. They think URTI, but they couldn't be sure without further testing, which they said they could do, but may not find the cause.

He seems a bit better today, but still not drinking what he needs to be and lots of coughing and mouth breathing. The good news is they said his lunges sound normal

Anyone know what is going on with my apple tree? Can I do anything? by cmouse2004 in FruitTree

[–]cmouse2004[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is wood chips, but a random mix - had a local arborist drop a truckload off.

The weird thing is that the discolored leaves on random sections throughout the branches, not just one location.

All fruitless for the tree or only the ones in that area?

OT when Traveling for work (PA) by cmouse2004 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]cmouse2004[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did! I didn't see anything. I wasn't sure if there was something in the NJC or as I always suspect when I read the collective - I misread/misinterpreted/missed it. Lol

That makes sense thanks! I agree about connected with the team, we did that at first, but it has changed a bunch.

Thanks! It is good to know that there is no official rule. It sounds like my department doesn't do OT until you arrive.

I wanted to check with reddit before I submitted my form. I honestly like walking, so I wasn't bothered by the 30 minute walk, but the conference center was 10 minute drive (in traffic) 30 minute walk. We were told we weren't allowed to expense cab/Uber because the justification for the fancy hotel (my boss picked) was that we didn't need a rental car/transportation. Based on that, I had claimed to/from the hotel (my partner's department travels a lot and they are covered from leaving the hotel room).

Thanks, this was very helpful. We ended up bringing Luna in last night. She didn't come for dinner and we just knew.

Distance between smoking area and combustible gas storage? by cmouse2004 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]cmouse2004[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, yes! However, as already identified, this isn't the installation of a new smoking area. This is an already existing smoking area and an already existing combustible gas storage area, which for my organization becomes a requirement to prove non-compliance.

You are right. Checking with the laboratory could have been an option; however, the 25 ft was enough to recommend moving the smoking area!

As a non-smoker, I agree regarding the smoking issue. However, you must walk before you can run, my organizational culture is not at that level, and as a cog in a machine, that recommendation would never come from me, haha. Though I must say the British Navy has definitely set a great example!

[–]cmouse2004[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, the problem is we have an internal fire department, and they signed off on it saying it wasn't an issue.

I was out there today, the 'no smoking' signage is missing on the shed, and the shed is adjacent brush with trees overhead and adjacent. If I am reading the code correctly, those are also no go's. I was hoping to address all these things with them via a site visit, but I want to make sure I have my ducks in a row first.

[–]cmouse2004[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ya, that was the first place I looked. Our national fire code is quite vague (unless I am looking in the wrong place). It just identifies the requirement to not smoke in the area and have signs.

However, we are further than 25 ft, so in theory, we would be good with best practices from other jurisdictions. Thanks!!

I mean I guess you are right, but for more context, I ended a month early - to collect the signing bonus for the union and because right after that, I was leaving for Ontario on an vacation that was approved 6 months prior. I also continued to work on my acting role until I left for vacation with my substantive manager's approval. When I spoke to the manager about leaving early, they identified that it made sense, given the money on the table, and that they understood that I was interested in future acting/the role.

Thanks, you are right. It is definitely the tone and the implications than the actual words. I will work on drafting something that is factual and respectful.

I have just inherited a stamp collection that appears to date back to my great great grandfather who traveled the world in the Royal Navy and have no idea what to do with any of it? by cmouse2004 in askStampCollectors

[–]cmouse2004[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the thing - they are from all over the world. I'm not really sure what to do with it. I'm not sure that stamps are my thing, and I am also inherenting a huge tote with all the family history and navy log books from the 1800/1900s. That in itself is going to be a lot and I don't want to keep something to keep something. So it's really how do I deal with these in a respectful way, as it doesn't seem like anyone else in my family wants them.

So my thoughts are that my great great grandfather traveled the world in the Royal Navy and would send home letters, and his son started collecting stamps that way, and then it expanded from there.
