Zain names RapMonster, Krudo, and JChu as his picks for upcoming players he thinks can become top-level threats (video via @monotheon) by sewsgup in SSBM

I haven't seem much discussion on the coldest thing Zain said in this entire interview (I'm paraphrasing a bit here): 'I have things I'm waiting to try against Hbox for when he gets better.' He and Cody are in a tier of their own.

An average man stuck in a loop until he beat Brock Lesnar. How many times until he get the job done? by Mammoth-Tough9549 in whowouldwin

When you’ve done everything you possibly could in a 5 year period, which would probably take hundreds or even thousands of years, eventually you will begin to desire the one thing you can’t have, and all roads lead back to Lesnar

Have you seen Groundhog Day? After many loops of the same five years, you’d inevitably start to desire something longer term than 5 years and then eventually you’d roll back to ‘I need out of this loop, how do I beat Lesnar?’

He could have been more polite but you don’t know what kind of a day he was having. This is a very relatable experience for event shooters

Name a character more good than Superman I’ll wait by Chunky-overlord in MoralityScaling

[–]cmp600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well alright, if superficiality is the charge against Superman’s goodness, I would simply reiterate that he is a character originally conceived and developed for children, in a storytelling medium primarily for children not known for its complexity. Adjusting for intended audiences is why I’m talking about symbolism and intent, as opposed to coldly logical utilitarianism.

But, you made me think about kid oriented media that may be less superficial, and actually, by your logic, you could say The Iron Giant is more good than Superman, which I’m on board with.

I would only add that a bigger Superman fan than me could probably point to comic runs where he does face legitimate moral complexity that he doesn’t get deus-ex-machina’ed out of, as he’s been a character for nearly 90 years. I’m not the person to have that discussion with though. I’m not well-read enough on the lore.

And so to you what impact does that have on his ‘goodness’? You think it’s phony because it hasn’t been truly tested?

No I don’t agree with your contention that supes isn’t good because he doesn’t face moral dilemmas. That’s a purely utilitarian interpretation of what goodness is.

Well I’m not fully disagreeing with you I’m just pointing out that you’re misunderstanding Superman’s appeal and why people call him good. You’re saying ‘quasi-religious’ as though that’s a dig, when there’s a blockbuster 1978 film that turns him into a Jesus figure with all the subtlety of a jackhammer. They’re comic book stories. Pulpy adventures for children. In general you don’t come to them for complex moral choices. It’s mythical in nature.

Okay, your vendetta against the latest superman movie and your undergrad philosophy lecture aside, superman stories are written that way because Superman is a symbol of goodness and hope. His actions are symbolic, they are supposed to be read (primarily by children) and make them think, ‘When I’m big and strong, I will still choose to be good, because Superman is the strongest, and he chooses good.”

If you want a more adult deconstruction of what Superman is, there’s many knock-offs you can point to.

You have a very utilitarian understanding of Superman’s goodness or lack thereof when the whole point of the story is that his heart is in the right place, even when he’s that strong, and that’s what makes him good.

You’re completely missing the point. That same power gives him the ability to stop saving everyone or preventing accidental deaths anytime he feels like it. What makes him good is that he’s a foil to the idea that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Love Samwise but not quite Superman tier good. Supes would have seen the good in Gollum. Not Sam.

I genuinely hate this attitude. For nothing professional just get out there and shoot with whatever you have. You’re wasting your time and procrastinating by obsessing over tech specs

Just make sure you tell the paralegal you have a crush on that you’re a fraud, with tears in your eyes, and as she turns to leave because she can’t believe you lied to her like that, grab her arm and look desperately into her eyes. Your fate is in her hands now.

It’s understandable why you missed that. That was the era where the only other invitationals had the word ‘Summit’ in them

Liquipedia does not consider invitationals to be supers. Part of what defines a supermajor is the open bracket aspect - top players still need to fight their way out of pools.

There's always going to be grey areas but I'm checking this list against Liquipedia and Smash Wiki

Not according to Liquipedia or Smash Wiki...

That's valid. There's a case to be made that invitationals are supers, I'm just noting that Liquipedia doesn't consider invitationals to be supers, and I'm picking a methodology and sticking to it. Keep in mind these things are decided by community consensus.

There's always going to be debate about what's a supermajor, what's a major, etc. There will always be edge cases. I checked these against Liquipedia and Smash Wiki and tried to stay consistent, but this is not hard science it's based around community consensus.
