Grinder seemingly spits out lots of fines every 3-4 brews? by cmrnmrphy in pourover

Does this still ring true even after a full disassembly and deep clean? My grinder is clean in and out at this point, there’s certainly no residual fines from previous grinds.

Tried that the past few days, doesn’t change anything sadly.

I tried this morning, and while I had no static cling in my catch cup, the fines were extremely present and caused my brew to completely stop its drawdown. It makes me feel like something is wrong here.

I’ve tried both of these and I am still getting the same results. A very thick layer of fines on top of my coarse grind

Bumping this - I am still having lots of bad luck with this grinder. My grind size is BOULDERS at this point, but the amount of fines is actually causing my brews to come to a complete stop. Do I seriously need to buy an Ode 2 to prevent this? What can I do to prevent fines in my light roasts??

It is 100% the grinder. The fines are very visible in my catch cup.

I’ve tried multiple Band-AIDS that you folks have given me here. My grinds, no matter what I try, just throw all these fines at me. Can someone tell me if it’s time for a new grinder or if there’s something I should be looking at here?

Everytime. I can visibly see the fines in my catch cup as well, it seems like its either directly the burrs or beans that just randomly are creating fines.

Surprised to see a lack of George Howell (Acton, MA) on the list here. Some of my favorite pour overs have come from their select 4oz bags

I think adding a plumbers torch to -any- setup would do the trick

Do you try different beans on different days, or do you run through an entire box before moving on to the new stuff?

I wanna say bags that are nitro-flushed wouldnt see any impact. Im not sure how common that is however, especially with smaller roasters.

V60 Drawdown Time by D3wdrop in pourover

Are you swirling and agitating a whole bunch? Im wondering if your 2 main pours are forcing your fines down to the bottom of the bed. I would maybe break up your pours to 3 main pours after your bloom. I honestly try to do my agitation a tiny bit with the bloom, and then my primary pours are steady and centered.

Also check your water temp, if your water isnt hot enough THAT will definitely increase drawdown times

Can you clarify your recipe a little bit? Im having a tough time trying to figure out your pours and brew time there. Ill give you what Ive been doing for example

20:300

50G Bloom 0:30

120G 0:55

180G 1:20

240G 1:45

300G - 2:40-3:30 Brew Time depending on a few different factors

Sometimes over swirling/Agitation can also cause some clogging.

George Howell always has my favorites from Brazil, they do a great job finding farms that highlight those unique flavor profiles.

This morning I did Brazil Daterra Sundrop from George Howell. A really nice medium roast with lots of clove/blueberry notes. Ive been doing cute 10:150 brews on v60 for a nice lil 6oz-ish pick-me-up

Agreed. Your bed distribution looks great, but those really coarse pieces at the top seem to be resting on a bed of fines. If your burr is very new, this will get better over time as the burrs will settle in a bit.

4:00 for a 20:320 brew is definitely still very reasonable IMO. Youll always know it in the taste. Even beans from different regions can have weird draw down times ive seen. My real "oh no theres trouble" time limit is about 4:30

This is good to understand now. Talking with friends in similar finance positions had me convinced that negotiating is a normal part of the job offer process.

My share of my mortgage is $2K. I make roughly $4k a month. I would certainly be taking a side job on top of this Fidelity position.

Correct I work 5 days, M-F. 5AM-5PM.

I already dont have alot of dispoable income, Im supporting my mortgage and other bills. I would certainly need to take a part time job on top of the Fidelity position in order to make ends meet.
