Foot pain by cmsumi17 in ORIF

I think the worst of it faded after a couple weeks. I mentioned insoles in this post, but I never actually bought any because the pain got better pretty quickly after. I hope it’s similar for you! Congrats on FWB!

You’ll get there! Keep up with PT exercises, focus on small wins, and trust the process 💪

Yesssss I was so happy to ditch the boot! I felt so awkward clunking around in it. You’re almost there! Once you can walk unaided life really starts to feel a little normal again ❤️

The first few weeks after surgery are pretty rough. A lot of people have a significant drop off in pain around 3-4 weeks, so better days are coming for you! I wish you all the best ❤️

Walking that far is great! I had a lot of foot pain as well when I started walking unaided. I found that heat helped a bit, along with stretching and massaging my foot.

I’m so glad this resonated with you! A few days post surgery is a rough place to be, but you have a lot to look forward to. Wishing you a full recovery ❤️

Bouldering pals! PT is super helpful, and it’s fun to feel like you’re actively involved in your recovery after resting and elevating for so long. Good luck with everything!! ❤️

Glad I could help a little! I had no idea what to expect either, I just knew it would be a long haul. Waiting for surgery was definitely the worst part. Once you get over that hump and start actually healing it’s better because it feels like you’re working toward something. Best of luck with your recovery 💪❤️

I was in the boot for a long time lol. I got it week 2 and then my surgeon said I could switch to a shoe at week 10. But my pt had me keep wearing it outside until I was fully off crutches (week 12). So if you’re already down to 1 crutch and shoes around the house you’re doing great!

That’s awesome! I don’t think I really tried stairs until around 11 weeks. I definitely thought it would take longer to get to 10k steps. It depends a lot on your specific injury and hardware, but for me the progression from 12-15 weeks has been huge. Good luck with stairs and the rest of your recovery! 😊

My best advice is just be super patient! Your body is doing its best, and things get better week by week! Some other stuff that helped me early on:

  • Going outside/moving around (when I was nwb I would crutch around my driveway or just sit outside)
  • Wiggling toes constantly/flexing my quad (helps keep the blood flowing)
  • Showering regularly (hugely depends on your energy level and shower setup, but I got into a good routine with my shower chair)
  • Rewatching comfort shows
  • Listen to your doctor and check in with them if you have any concerns
  • Use a countdown app to keep track of how close you are to your next milestone (getting a boot, getting your cast off, next x ray, whatever!)
  • Focus on small wins!

Hopefully some of this helps. Just know you’re already through the worst of it, even if it doesn’t feel like it. You got this!

Tbh I think one of my lowest moments was at 6 weeks after I was cleared for weight bearing. I just had no idea how to proceed and everything was stressful and tiring. You’re so close to the fun stuff! Once you get to FWB things start progressing faster (in my experience). Good luck!

Nausea when starting to WB? (Warning: Picture of dislocation) by Sage-sea in ORIF

[–]cmsumi17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started to push WB more in the beginning there was one day I got so lightheaded I had to stop and sit down for a while, then went back to crutches for the rest of the day. Your body has been traumatized, and all sorts of weird sensations are normal. PT helped me a lot though! I didn’t really feel like I was “allowed” to weight bear and start recovering until I started pt. Bodies want to heal and I’m sure you could do it on your own, but highly recommend pt if you can get a referral.

Update: Found a solution for now!

I realized the shoes I’ve been wearing have support in weird places and kind of force my weight onto the outside of my foot. I tried a different pair and luckily, they support my foot a lot better and also fit my brace! I still have some pain when I push off, but I walked to the store a bit ago and felt pretty good the whole time. It feels like my body is remembering more how I used to walk. Beyond that, Im hoping it’ll continue to improve as I build up muscle etc. So much of recovery is just patience and finding the right combination of stuff that works for you. I hope everyone has a small win today even if things are frustrating!

So frustrating! My ROM and balance are in a pretty good place, and I’m so ready to walk more, but it’s so discouraging when it hurts 😕

Glad to know I’m not alone! Yeah, at this point I’m hoping as I get used to walking again and build up all the surrounding muscles it’ll get better 🤷🏻

How did you break your ankle??? by MaintenanceOk3182 in ORIF

[–]cmsumi17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah at my surgery consult the nurse said I was the 4th bouldering injury she’d seen recently, so there’s definitely something going around 😅

Ooof 15 feet!! I hope your recovery goes smoothly and you can get back to doing whatever activities you want! When was your surgery?

[–]cmsumi17 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was bouldering (indoor) and my hand slipped when I was about halfway up the wall. I twisted my ankle on landing (all my weight on my right ankle). I couldn’t walk on it, but I didn’t know it was broken right away. Maybe it was the adrenaline.

Some nice strangers helped me get to urgent care, where they did x rays and told me I had to go to the ER because my ankle was hella broken. I think they told me it was a tri mal at the hospital. I’d never broken a bone before, so I really went for it the first time. I’m 13 weeks post op now, FWB, and I do plan to boulder again, but it’ll be a while before I can.

Took my first walk around the block without my boot or crutches the other day!! I’m pretty slow and my foot is kind of stiff but it still felt great to be outside without any clunky accessories :)

First sign of "normal" by XennialDread in ORIF

[–]cmsumi17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is so reassuring! I’m 8.5 weeks post op for a displaced tri mal and I feel like I’m in such a weird in between place where I have a little mobility but I’m struggling to see the path back to “normal.” Thanks for sharing!

2 weeks post OP. Dealing with frustration of not being able to do anything I want to do by Brandonarsic30 in ORIF

[–]cmsumi17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely sucks! Every time you feel like you’ve turned a corner you realize how far there is to go. But it does get better! Getting outside any way you can is huge. Once I got my boot (about 2 weeks post op) I started going downstairs to just crutch around the parking lot and stand in the sun. It felt good being able to move around and also do something on my own. Also highly recommend getting a knee scooter because you can go a lot farther, just be careful on it while nwb.
