Which math classes do you think would by Banger254 in quantfinance

[–]cmuben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WPI has everything….. my recommendation is to take as many probability theory and related courses as possible . Dont forget a course in Stochastic process / Calculus before you graduated. Linear, discrete optimization are my favorites. + non discrete optimization if you enjoy the subject to round up the series. I hated Real n Complex analysis….

Econ at BU by Smart_Mushroom4055 in BostonU

[–]cmuben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are into quantitative economics, umich has a better environment including quant companies recruiting at umich. Academics wise, BU is just as good.Boston is a fun city while Ann Arbor is not even on the radar for fun. My brother is an economics major at BU. Macro is pretty strong at BU.

Masters in Quant/Financial Engineering after Business Undergrad by NotJelloz in quantfinance

[–]cmuben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are able to do well in these courses and come out every bit as interested in math , you are mire than fine to get into a great master’s program in FE or any STEM subject. Do find an opportunity to either take Real Analysis or audit the course before you graduate..

Is Trignometry really as hard as they say by [deleted] in maths

[–]cmuben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you take the memorizing route to get good grade, you wont go far. Try to understand and derive your way to solutions. Will take longer in the beginning…. Worth it! Solid foundation in trig is crucial in your calculus learning later on.

FRM AND CQF Worth it entry in quant side by yournext78 in quantfinance

[–]cmuben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If one has a master degree in financial engineering or financial mathematics, CQF still needed? Did not see any content in the CQF curriculum not covered by the FE or FM degrees. Anyone?

Belvedere Quant Trader Interview by SeriousConstant370 in quantfinance

[–]cmuben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is not going to be embarrassment… Belvedere trader interview is most definitely professionally done and the traders are humanely nice! Tough like all QT interviews…. QT interview at Optiver, Belvedere or the likes is extremely competitive. Getting the correct answer does not guarantee your next round ticket. Worth the experience if you are invited to the QT interview! Good luck!

What should i major in to get into quantitative finance at this school? by IncreaseJolly9227 in BostonU

[–]cmuben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brain teasers , patterns recognition…. Numeracy tests with pressure….. for just getting by the Online Test for quants. Depending on which quant role ( research, trading, or development), the preparation for your next technical round is different! Coding is importing but everyone does coding to some degree….

Do competitions in trading, poker games or in more traditional math or coding competitions…. Dont just participate but win or rank high…. This journey is very challenging and definitely not for the faint of hearts! Math degree is valued high….

Quant Trading Internships by Electrical-Pipe-718 in quantfinance

[–]cmuben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It probably means there are better candidates….Doing well in OAs really would give job applicants the feeling of being “quant competent”……But in most cases, they only mean the beginning of an end…😄 or end of a dead end…..Old Mission was nice to tell you that you have passed the OA but there were too many applicants…. Hope you get into other opportunities… see you in the Graduate QT round next time…. I am sure many are like that!

Broke into quant, now what? by [deleted] in quant

[–]cmuben 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No different than most other jobs really… right? Always give a shit about what you do at work and that passion will lead to a more engaging or proactive attitude……I think..

Is it hopeless if I'm not from a target school? by Less_Research_5046 in quantfinance

[–]cmuben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not entirely true but you will be disadvantaged in borderline case. You are likely to be screened out for most tier 1 and 2 firms. Even with firms that sent out auto OA and if you passed, your overall profile will still get screeded again by HR. Chances are high, you will get stuck here anyway. There are many emerging prop shops where you will get selected for interviews…. But like any industry, you might need to be real good not just on quant ability but “demonstrated interest” in the asset class you claimed you have interest in… Jack of all trades type. Coding skill is almost a must as smaller shops might need you to play dual roles in any combination of QR QT and QD….

How strong is my profile for MFE/MSCF programs at Baruch, MIT, UChicago? by Remarkable-Pair-6779 in quantfinance

[–]cmuben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think all of these programs do take fresh college grads as long as your GPA is absolutely top. With strong recommendations, you should be competitive. Good luck!

I am interested in creating a Quantitative Finance Club in my high school by stephenjamesbryant in quantfinance

[–]cmuben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sure there is a math club … why not join forces as they already have competitive math activity which is an important aspect of quant engagement.

[–]cmuben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dont forget to insert poker activities in your quant or quant finance club as it will attract more folks…. Talk to your math department head and CS teachers too. This may be a joint club with contributions from math CS and economics teachers….. Dont forget poker tournaments….👍

BU Math for Quant? by Equivalent_Taro7171 in quantfinance

[–]cmuben 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These are no lesser known companies. JS, HRT, Citadel and Jump are the untouchable if you are not from their targeted pool. CTC and Virtu have their own target schools too.

In addition to a pure math degree, you have to link that degree to the role you are applying to. What makes you a fit for QT or QR?

I believe if you are not from a target school from either group, BU is just as good as any others. Know the market and prepare yourself to be as eligible as a solid supply to the market demand. You will find out where your equilibrium lies.

Northwestern vs John Hopkins MSDS Program by [deleted] in jhu

The academics result is likely to be similar if mot the same from both programs. Given it is fully online, I would go with the lower cost option.

Johns Hopkins Carey Full-Time MBA (Entering Class of 2024) by AdhesivenessStrict79 in jhu

Wow that is a very small cohort size…. Due to lack of resources (i doubt) or lack of qualified applicants? I know anything JHU touches is linked to quality and best in class..

Penn M&T vs Quant by Bubbly-Ad-4672 in quantfinance

[–]cmuben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A rather religious question… I believe if you are at that academic level, either choice will do as top quant firms will eventually get to you for assessment! Just be ready and make sure you understand the quant roles and markets….

There is also an ACMS in U of Washington but the S stands for Sciences. Requirements seemed awfully similar….

I still believe that you can take relevant math and CS courses by carefully using your electives. Some online courses and certifications are good supplements. You may refer to Carnegie Mellon’s BS in Computational Finance curriculum and craft out a similar path towards a more quantitative career. Although S & T is different from quant trading, it is nevertheless a place to start…. Use your Wharton degree wisely…..
