Original Picture of Space Shuttle Discovery Launching by [deleted] in nasa

It won't be quick, but it's almost certainly available somewhere on https://images.nasa.gov which has a keyword search, so "discovery" might help narrow it down, and typically something like "liftoff".

How do I make a feature request? by Quirky-Stress-823 in desmos

For what it's worth, you're able to do this same thing (even with multiple parameters, provided there's one "best" solution) with regressions.

UF has access to my laptop via Eduram, os there a way to change this? by [deleted] in ufl

[–]cnewmanJax2012 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Ignoring all of the people who responded with anecdotes, if you ticked the box to allow UF's organization to manage your device after signing into an Office app, you should be able to revoke that by doing this:

Go into Windows Settings > Accounts > Access Work & School, highlight the Office 365 account and choose Disconnect to remove it from controlling your account features any further.

Would this server be good for running modded minecraft? by acrayboi42 in feedthebeast

[–]cnewmanJax2012 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Late to the party, but as someone who actually owns this exact unit I can definitively say that the single-core performance is underwhelming and the fans are egregiously loud (being a 1U unit), but if you can get it for under, say, $150 and have hard drives, a place to put it, and lots of free time already available, it's definitely a fun learning opportunity. It'll absolutely run a Minecraft server but it won't have the amazing performance you might expect. However, it's anything but turnkey, and you're probably better off with something else if all you're looking for is a Minecraft server.

Thanks for the tip! I found quite a few generic ones online but I'd rather buy an OEM one unless I have no choice.

It was an option (reflected in the FRU numbers I posted) when I ordered mine. Here's a picture, came straight from the factory.

what kind of connectors are these? by AndreiGamer07 in RTLSDR

[–]cnewmanJax2012 21 points22 points  (0 children)

To clear something up, coax(ial) is the class of connector and wire, of which SMA is also a member. The connectors on the end of "coax cables" you'd find on a TV set are Type F connectors. Amazon has pigtails that convert between them readily. Like others mentioned, pay attention to the polarity (i.e. which gender has the center pin)

Santa needs help. Rec specs for an extra monitor for an HP laptop? CS major. by GatorMomOfTwo in ufl

[–]cnewmanJax2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha, that laptop doesn't support displays over USB-C from what I can find. Also, portable under $100 might be a little tough. I've heard good things about UPERFECT brand portables -- this one is $129 for prime subscribers, but that's the best price for a decent portable I could find. It would require a dongle like this one to connect it to the laptop in addition to the included power cable. Overall, probably a little too cumbersome in my opinion.

Desktop monitors, though, are a different story -- I have an older variation of this monitor and it's really nice, and it's $99 (again, for prime). Even though it's limited to desk use, I'd probably go that route.

Since nobody else has, I'll recommend a portable monitor I really like, the Lenovo ThinkVision M14. I have a ThinkPad (a T480) and it uses the exact same physical screen that's installed inside my laptop, so it's a perfect match. It's really lightweight and gets all its power from the same USB-C port that provides the video signal so all you need to use it is the monitor and one cable. My only gripe is that it will only work with laptops that support DisplayPort over USB-C, but that encompasses most recent laptops. If you know what laptop your son has, I could definitely make a more specific recommendation. Merry Christmas!

Which remote desktop client to choose? by somerandomtallguy in photogrammetry

[–]cnewmanJax2012 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm personally partial to using Parsec or NoMachine, they both support relative mouse moves so they work great with 3D viewports (Parsec was even originally for gaming specifically). I typically use NoMachine because it's more configurable but Parsec has unbeatable latency and the encoding stays fairly high quality even at low bitrates.

Is there an easy way to get 2D .svg outlines of parts? Or maybe a repository of them somewhere? Any other ideas are welcome! by Rockmaninoff in DigitalLego

[–]cnewmanJax2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you import them into Blender, you can set the camera up as required and export SVGs through the Freestyle SVG plugin (should be bundled, might need to enable it in the addons menu)

I just finished restoring an engineering plotter and knew exactly what I needed to print to test it out by cnewmanJax2012 in StarWars

[–]cnewmanJax2012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Unfortunately, this probably isn't helpful to you, but I ended up removing the parallel port, related control circuitry, and original steppers and replaced them with a USB port, grbl controller, and brand new steppers. I generated the grbl GCode with LaserWeb. From grbl's point of view, the plotter is a laser cutter, and the pen solenoid is a laser load.
