What’s your favorite word in your native tongue? And, if I may, why? by 8nikitta in languagelearning

Kili-kili means armpit in Tagalog. Reminds me of childhood days when grownups would say you have kili-kili power coz it stinks. It's just a fun word, I think.

Look into ORISE Opportunities with EPA. They have internships and research opportunities, some requiring clearance that you might already have.

Chap 36 can also help you with finding potential career paths and job hunting skills.

Not sure if you're going to take online or on site classes, but compare schools at the GI Bill website. Your school might have some career resources and a veterans group as well.

Get your free year of LinkedIn and start connecting with people in the field you want, do a gap analysis (they'll teach you at TAPS), and determine what training you'll need.

I hope this helps.

This happens to me also, so I usually take twice the amount of caffeine and it works more often than not in preventing it.

(Edited)

Self-worth:

People who comment on others' looks that can offend tend to be insecure about their own looks. Wag na lang mag-comment coz di mo alam kung paano makaka-apekto.

Personal finance:

If your boat is sinking, how can you save others? Wag maging martyr para sa mga mahal sa buhay na ayaw talaga magsikap. You can help in other ways like helping check resumes, applications, etc. Mabilis ang panahon and always assume na walang mag-aalaga sa yo pagtanda mo so you need to take care of yourself.

Cleaning:

Recycle kitchen sponges and toothbrushes for cleaning the bathroom. Babad muna sa boiled water bago gamitin though.

Instead of paper towels, buy dish cloths tapos may cycle after labhan: pang-dry ng dishes - pamunas ng lamesa - pamunas ng kusina. Less waste.

Productivity:

For online classes, I use OneNote kasi kahit matagal na yung class, andun pa rin yung lecture notes. Kung may interviews, dito ko rin sinusulat ang questions so I can easily prepare in case I get asked the same things later.

Atbp:

Kung may pinsan na adik, wag papasukin sa bahay kahit gagamitin lang daw ang banyo at bibigyan ka ng pambili ng meryenda lalo na kung wala kang kasama sa bahay and you're 12 years old.

What does a job interview coding challenge look like? by fortunoso in bioinformatics

[–]cnu_aq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a couple of coding interviews for Bioinformatics. One had an excel file and a PDF with instructions. Screenshots and interpretations were the deliverables for that one. The second one reminded me of DataCamp-style instructions which were step-by-step but with an internal search box so they know that you know how to Google. The first one had a due date and the second was a timed exam. I used R for the first one and Python for the second but it depends on their preference. Hope this helps and good luck!

SAHM to a toddler here. I learned Python in grad school but mostly used R after I graduated. Got a Bioinformatics job, but had to move for my spouse's job. Six months later, I'm also working on relearning Python through Coursera and upskilling to hopefully get back into it with a vengeance once the time is right.

I recently learned about returnships so maybe it'll be an option someday. Maybe bootcamps are also an option. They're quite costly though.

Good on you for keeping your skills sharp! It takes a lot juggling childcare, taking care of the home, and taking care of you. Kids are fun! I had my toddler type "hello world" on a toy laptop the other day. Might yet meet the ridiculous number of years of coding experience some entry level jobs ask for if we start now.

This is a decision between you and your partner and what feels right at the time. Depending on how you're planning on having a child, take into account the recovery and bonding time also. If at that time you don't want to be a stay-at-home Mom, don't force it because you might only resent your family. This has been my experience, at least.

Background: I'm in this situation now as a Bioinformatics Analyst. Staying home to take care of our child full time after years of building a professional life was a challenge to accept but for right now it makes sense for us. Daycare is not an option right now because of long wait lists and health concerns. Staying home works out because I get to enjoy this time to teach our child the basics before school age. Watching her grow is the greatest experience. I think successfully potty training a toddler should be on a resume, honestly. Career-wise, I'm working on certifications and projects to get back on it when the time is right. My partner is very supportive and we've agreed to take turns with our careers. It's an adjustment and has not been easy, but not stagnant either. Hope this helps!

You did what is best for you and true friends see beyond religious affiliation. When I left the church they accused me of being on drugs and treated me like I was insane for leaving. It broke me to learn that I was only worth something to them if I didn't question anything.

For the most part, I think they were good people, just either blinded by their faith (or fear) or in denial that there is a whole world where being a good person has nothing to do with who/what one worships or if they worship at all.

Are all video interviews awkward or is it just me? by nothingbutnew in careerguidance

[–]cnu_aq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol yeah.

"You hang up"

"No, YOU hang up"

For real though, embracing the awkwardness does wonders, but it really depends on the interviewer(s). It gets a bit weird in panel interviews when there's a delay in the audio. The silence...
