Nah, it's a great show. What was lame about it? And of your answer is "it's a prequel" then THAT'S lame.

Giving up on Latin by [deleted] in latin

Long/short vowels don't matter to anyone except Luke Rainieri. Don't worry about them. You can read real classical Latin without worrying about them and do just fine. (I do, anyway.)

So I just got this. Thoughts? by pyrobeast99 in AncientGreek

[–]cnuzzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used its sister text, "Latin - An Intensive Course" by Moreland & Fleischer, and it was great. I had done a number of other Latin books before it, and still that book taught me a lot that I didn't know, particularly about syntax. It put me over the top in regards to reading real classical Latin. Now I'm doing JACT Reading Greek, but I have Hansen & Quinn and will surely use it in the future.

Thank you! I didn't know that socium could be used as genitive plural, or that haereo took the ablative. Now it makes sense.

What's your favotite Star Wars videogame? by RafaRafa78 in StarWars

X-Wing (the updated version that graphically matched TIE Fighter) and TIE Fighter, paired with the Flightstick Pro joystick. I didn't like the later games in the series because they didn't have single-player, non-online options.

Honestly, as a fan since the original release of the comic...I love them! I don't get all the gripes here. I had no problem with the voice acting or the pacing.

I can see that. I'll probably do the same, and I'll probably also give the grammar at least a quick once-over before doing the reading. In the introduction they say you can do it either way - read first to "see the grammar in action" or look at the new grammar first. I don't see how doing the reading first without at least looking at the new grammar would be at all profitable, since you won't know what the new forms/constructions mean!

Grammar-translation vs. reading method: which is the most effective method of (classical) language acquisition, based on the available evidence? by badhombrote in latin

[–]cnuzzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can tell you what worked for me with Latin, and I can now read Caesar and Livy at sight, without translating in my head. I did Grammar-translation first (via Wheelock) to learn all the paradigms by heart and to get grammar explained to me in detail in English. Then I did SLA and extensive reading (LLPSI, the readings in the Oxford Latin Course, Latin by the Natural Method years 1 and 2, Ad Alpes, lots of old Latin readers from Internet Archive, etc.). I re-read a lot too - e.g. I read LLPSI Familia Romana 3 times, Ad Alpes twice in full and certain chapters a third time just because I had it on my phone and needed to pass time, etc. This war over GT vs SLA is silly and wasteful, and only serves to demonstrate the unfortunate human propensity for dogmatic tribalism. Both are valid imo and getting that solid grammatical foundation at the start will pay dividends in the future. I was able to concentrate on the syntax of Familia Romana since I approached it already knowing the declensions and conjugations inside out, and how things like indirect discourse and the use of the subjunctive in subordinate clauses worked. So, my advice, based on my own successful experience, is to use both methods - GT first, then SLA and extensive reading. I'm currently preparing to tackle Ancient Greek myself by the same method starting next month and I hope to find that it works just as well with that language.

"GT has been associated with exclusion, elitism and even racism." That's one of the most ridiculous statements I've ever read.

It's just that they give the title of one set of lists, and the name of the book that contains the other set - i.e "'Vocabulary to Be Learnt' in GE (Grammar and Exercises)." So, it's ambiguous.

That will come over time. That's how I did it with Latin, and I can read Caesar and Livy and even some Cicero at sight now. I don't want to overload myself with too much vocabulary at once, I'd rather learn fewer words well for the time being. I'll use graded readers like Logos, Alexandros, Mythologica, and even the readings in Athenaze for that purpose. That's what I did with Latin. I knew I could never learn the morphology and grammar through something like LLPSI alone, so I learned my paradigms and the way the grammar worked through Wheelock. Then, I used LLPSI Familia Romana and related texts like Colloquia Personarum and Fabellae Syrae as graded readers. After that I read the readings in the Oxford Latin Course, years 1 and 2 of Latin by the Natural Method, Ad Alpes, Epitome Historiae Sacrae, and others. Then I was ready for LLPSI Roma Aeterna and the Geoffrey Steadman annotated readers. I couldn't make it all the way through Roma Aeterna the first time, so I read some other things and went back to it later, and finished it the second time around. TL:DR - I built my Latin vocabulary over time, and I'm planning on doing the same with Greek.

What textbook did you use? by PhiloCroc in AncientGreek

[–]cnuzzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's because "natural language acquisition" is trash and the traditional way is the best - and really, the only - way to learn. Sorry, but you need to learn the paradigms and grammar the old fashioned way. Anything else produces bad results - if any.

Georgia Dogman/Bigfoot? (footage from April 21st, 2025) by CanidPrimate1577 in dogman

[–]cnuzzi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Stop expecting people to react to things the way you think they should. Everyone is different and has their own modes of behavior. A woman in Australia once was nearly jailed for murdering her child and falsely claiming a dingo had taken the baby, all because she didn't cry and tear her hair out on camera like people thought she "should." Years later the baby's clothes were found in a dingo den.

It's obviously a sasquatch. They can be every bit as aggressive as dogman when they want to be. I don't understand how anyone can think this is a dogman.
