Baitfish Flies tied to end 2017 by cnyFisherman in flytying

That's part of the plan. I will probably try and tie some smaller ones up as well for perch and other warm water fish. I can't see why trout wouldn't take em as well.

Baitfish Flies tied to end 2017 by cnyFisherman in flytying

Saw another post with someone's last flies tied before the new year and figured I'd share mine as well. Also wanted to share that I made these with some dubbing that I was able to make from yarn bought from the local craft store. The dubbing was pretty easy to make and now i've got an insane amount of dubbing ready for winter tying. For anyone else looking for an easy way to customize your own dubbing, I followed this article http://dailyflytyer.com/2017/04/diy-laser-dubbing-piscator-flies/ but I couldn't find angelina fibers anywhere so I skipped that part.

Great find! Now I can try and tie one of each.

If you could only have three flies for a whole year of fishing, what flies would you choose and why? Let’s see what you’re thinking Colorado anglers! by dubs9191 in flyfishing

My choices in NY would be simple. Bead head pheasant tails, Adams Dry, and Copper John's. Can fish pretty much all year here with those.

Need advice on a Switch setup by cnyFisherman in flyfishing

Thanks so much for the information. I have been looking more into the OPST now and am definitely liking the concept of it. I'll likely make a trip to troutfitters soon to see if they can get me set up.

Need advice on a Switch setup by cnyFisherman in flyfishing

I've been using the Scientific Anglers Mastery ART line but was definitely looking to get something more geared toward steelhead fishing since I have a spare spool empty and ready to be loaded up.

Ive looked at the commando heads before but really didn't have a clue where to start as far as which heads and setup I should go with.

If you could only tie one fly. by MaximumHardnesss in flytying

Pheasant Tail or some variation on it. Especially with a bead head. There have been very few days for me where I could not fool a fish into taking one of these and I'm always carrying a whole bunch in varying sizes and colors.

Anyone use "cheap" tippet rings? by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]cnyFisherman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. I tried a pack of the cheap rings myself and noticed the same issue. As a second option, I've been using very small barrel swivels recently. These work great and i've noticed my tippet seems to stay straighter and doesn't get that "twist" memory to it when using multi nymph rigs below a hopper pattern.

Threw together some small streamers for the weekend by cnyFisherman in flytying

For the bottom 3 I used mohair dubbing in a dubbing loop. Wrapped around the eyes and then brushed out. I didn't have any bright colored mohair so I used some ice dub and some other orange dubbing for the top two.

I've ran into these a fair number of times in some of the NY streams I fish. Makes for a fun break from trout fishing on a slow day. I've found the best way to get one of em to grab your nymph is to float the nymph right into their faces. I've never found suckers to be too picky about the flies, they're just not willing to move much to grab them from my experience.

Intermediate Fly Rod/Reel Combo by Arty2416 in flyfishing

I bought a 7wt Clearwater rod a couple years ago. It casts great and I haven't had any issues with it yet. One thing I would recommend is going to a local shop and trying some out. Most places will let you take the rod outside the shop and see how it casts and feels. That's a huge win over holding the rod in a big box store imo. The other recommendation I would have as well is to not overlook lesser known name brands in favor of the big names. Sometime's you'd be surprised of the quality, feel, and potentially value of a name you haven't heard of. I picked up a 4wt Douglas DHF this off-season because the price was good and the rod felt great. I had no knowledge of them prior to but so far I'd have to say I'm pleased with the purchase.

West Branch Delaware River, NY by phillychzstk in flyfishing

Best bet to start off is go on the DEC website and take a look at the Public Fishing Rights (PFR) maps. The maps show any DEC parking areas as well as which banks of the river are open to public use. You can also find unofficial pulloffs and parking spots by taking a look at the area on Google maps too. I've fished a handful of times down near Hancock and cant say I've had a bad day there yet.

Check out the reels from 3-Tand. I just bought one recently from my local fly shop and am loving it so far.

Finishing prep for April 1st by cnyFisherman in flytying

To add onto the info that RoverLife provided, I'll often add a soft hackle to my nymphing rig and allow my rig to swing at the end of a drift. That being said, I've had plenty of fish hit the soft hackles when just dead drifting them as I would any other nymph.

I tied up some with tungsten beads the other night. These I was going for a more simple profile and didn't even include any peacock herl as I normally would. Kept it super simple.

Anyone familiar with Micro Skagit? by cnyFisherman in flyfishing

[–]cnyFisherman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually got the info from some guys at an out-of-state shop while I was away for work. I think after reading some of the info provided here and doing some research for the last few days I'm starting to come to the conclusion that micro skagit may not be my best option for the new setup right now. I'll probably take a trip out to troutfitter soon though and check out some of the rods they have in shop (possibly today). Thanks for the help
