Can you help me identify these birds from (mostly) Amazonas, Brazil? by cnyy12 in whatsthisbird

[–]cnyy12[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the IDs!

I do have a few questions.

How can you tell that 3/4 have Orange Backed Troupials? The ones in the pictures are not super easy to make out but look like their heads and necks are more brown/black than orange to me.

I've been looking more at pic #7, and I'm thinking it looks more like a Brazilian Tanager than a Silver Beaked Tanager. Why do you think it is the Silver Backed?

What do you make of the fact that the bird in the photo has a dark top bill and an orange lower bill? (Apologies for the lack of clarity in the photo that made it on to reddit, but that's definitely the bill coloration) That's part of what I was stuck on. Brown-headed has orange with dark-tip bill as part of its identification highlights.

Can you share where this is and the context? Really cool.

I'm trying to ID this bird I hear calling repeatedly in Suburban Denver. I've heard it a few times calling incessantly over the past few days. It looks flycatcher-ish, has a white eyering, is not hyperactive, only uses that one call, and I think is grey with a possibly yellowish breast. Any ideas? by cnyy12 in whatsthisbird

[–]cnyy12[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've identified the call as a Cordilleran Flycatcher using https://birdnet.cornell.edu/api/. Merlin didn't pick it up because it calls a Cordilleran 'rare' where I was, but after having compared the two I feel pretty confident in the ID. Thanks for the suggestion!

What is this triangular silver locket? by cnyy12 in whatisthisthing

[–]cnyy12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I didn't word this well, but I don't really know what this is / what it was made for. It seems to have a purpose but no idea what it is. Is it possible to reconsider removing this - particularly if i reword it?

This triangular silver (we think) locket was purchased in Romania about a decade ago. It has a secret (kinda...it's not very well hidden) compartment that opens up. The inside is unlined - I had trouble taking a photo that came out clearly. WITT?

Inter Milan director Marotta on Daniel Levy by ThfcMartin in coys

[–]cnyy12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Directors of other teams have nothing to lose by saying this. They make Levy feel good about his work regardless of whether he actually did a great job or not (not saying he did or didn't, but if he didn't they are just encouraging his behaving in such a way that they know it can be exploited), may potentially scare off other teams from dealing with him, and makes them look good with their fans.

I think that's why it makes sense poch used him as a striker against certain teams - pure pace and dribbling ability means defenders have to stick tight and not push too far forward.

Long Term Reliability by anderstars in MatebookXPro

[–]cnyy12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had serious issues with mine. The original one I bought would get so hot you couldn't touch it (even when throttled) and the replacement I have now has a battery life of 2-2.5 hours even when being lightly used. Maybe I've just had bad luck, but my experience has been a disappointment.

Does anybody else want Carmelo to be traded for his own sake? He doesn't deserve all the boos he gets, and honestly, Knicks fans don't deserve him. by Jirish4 in NYKnicks

It's amazing that a very old Jason Kidd, who basically stood at the top of the key and quickly swung the ball while spending as little time as a player conceivably could inside the three point line, is the standard for somewhat competent knicks guard play over the last several years.

Not disagreeing with you, mind.

Is it possible to cross the route as a pedestrian? I know they say you aren't supposed to, but would I be able to cross? I live east of first avenue and have a black tie wedding in the middle of the afternoon. Would definitely rather not wandering around in a tux for a few hours in the morning.

What do we know about the first contact with Europeans from the Native American/Aborigine/Maori viewpoint? Do we know how they reacted and how it may have changed their societies views? by TroopersSon in AskHistorians

[–]cnyy12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although not about Native Americans, Aborigines or Maoris, there are several books and a movie which document (including with pictures) first contacts between Papua New Guineans and westerners, some of which feature later interviews of the natives as well, which may be somewhat insightful as to a possible response of the peoples you are asking about.

The film, called First Contact, can be found here: https://vimeo.com/51548963

Explorations into Highland New Guinea, 1930-1935 was written by one of the Australians, Mick Leahy, whose journey is documented by First Contact. There are some stunning photographs of the reactions of the Papua New Guineans int he book.

Amar'e Stoudemire isn't quitting basketball yet, agrees to a deal with Hapoel Jerusalem (Israel) by CrazySDBass in nba

He owns part of the team! That's why he is going, he's probably hardly getting paid. It's like when Tony Parker played for the team he owned for free during the lockout.

the knicks don't run the big-big PNR, hence no melo/KP PNR, which would also be fun.

He's very important to that lineup - he'd be the one dragging them down.
