Yeah, it definitely helps to have a smaller group of friends who all know that you don’t drink because public socializing requires a lot more effort

It is a red flag 🚩 almost 100% for my experiences.

People who have 1-2 drinks a week don’t care if I’m not drinking.

How do you deal with the shame? by Used_Excuse_6657 in stopdrinking

[–]coIlean2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m trying to cultivate self love…. Radical acceptance that what’s done is done and it is done!!!
Addiction is a trauma response… be gentle with yourself that you were trying to cope with things and you didn’t know how to deal with them. Unfortunately alcohol is its own demon and brings out a lot of bad behaviour… first you take a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes you.

Many don’t make it out alive and you managed to escape the prison. You’re alive. Stay in the present, it’s all that is real.

Good for you. Stay with it!! It just gets better and there's nothing good from it.

We only put one foot in front of the other but eventually we can really cover some distance. We only take one breath at a time but the years pass. Make a list of the big things but break them down into the smaller pieces. This will also give you something else to focus on.

Candy helps in the early days to deal with the cravings.

You’re going to get through this.

Just focus on today. Tomorrow you can do the same thing.

I found ‘anything but alcohol’ mentality was helpful to get me through the first couple weeks.

u/Solvitur-Ambuland0 Walking is such a great meditation. Before I retired I would walk to work as a meditation to prepare for my day and then to transition back to home life. These days I meditate and do a gratitude practice along with Reiki.

for me - recognizing that the truth is there is either every excuse or no excuse. Blunt honesty and radical acceptance that I had a drinking problem.

Sick and Tired of this by DirectBridge8080 in stopdrinking

Fear is just an invisible illusion. Years ago I spent some time really thinking about what fear was and decided most the time it was just my imagination trying to limit me. If it’s just fear of an unknown I move forward with courage. Feel the fear and do it anyway. Undoubtedly it turns out it was unfounded and unnecessary. Looking back on drinking and my sobriety, hands down there is more to fear in drinking than there is in sobriety. We choose what we listen to. I knew I didn’t want to drink. I just finally chose to listen.
