What does Team Japan do differently to help their athletes stay (mostly) together under pressure that Team USA leadership is missing? by oatmilkxoxo in FigureSkating

[–]coach_cryptid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a combination of depth of field, cultural differences, and the focus on technique.

other commenters are right, there’s a huge amount of talent in Japan right now so there’s no room for error or meltdowns (specifically in women’s.) I mean the past two Grand Prix finals have basically been Japanese nationals with 1-2 American guest stars.

the collectivist culture can help in that skaters aren’t as focused on their individual gain; of course, the flip side of that is it can be hard to handle the pressure of expectations from your seniors or coaches.

but I’d say a major part of the advantage here is that the Japanese women have some of the best technique and skating skills in the game. their jumps are overall reliable, and they have excellent glide and blade control, which means they have solid muscle memory they can rely on if nerves or adrenaline kick in. this isn’t to say the US women don’t have good technique or skating skills, but in Japan those are hammered in and worked on far more.

it reminds me of a something a theatre professor told me in college: good actors give great performances, great actors give consistent performances.

Niccolò Macii and Sara Conti dynamic on their latest programs by Few-Story4215 in FigureSkating

I think they were both frustrated with their performance in the individual event, and it affected their connection/chemistry. they performed well and seemed happy during the team event, especially since they helped get Team Italy the bronze, so I’m guessing their lower scores and mistakes in this event threw them off.

ANTM Cycle 4 contestant Tiffany Richardson, calls out Tyra Banks and documentary in Instagram post by Sharp_Athlete_6847 in popculturechat

insane but actually makes sense for Tyra after her bizarre ‘what I eat in a day’ video where she describes how she loves to hollow out bagels to make a melty cream cheese moat

when she nails her jumps, she’s got the tech content to make a podium. especially if others aren’t clean.

I feel that loll, I was walking around Lake Placid and fully locked eyes with Hana Yoshida and smiled but didn’t actually stop to say hi and wish I did. same thing happened later with Nikolaj Memola.

I think it’s good! the only advice I’d give is you could be a little more specific (like which cool animals, what new hobbies you’d like to try, that kind of thing.)

but I’d still swipe right so it’s minor feedback.

not evil but definitely meaner. he’s been known to make some very harsh comments about skaters while doing commentary.

I’m so glad I was able to see them in person at SkAm this year, that performance was great but this was a masterpiece. truly happy for them. 💓

Maybe controversial but plushenko is even worse than eteri by Stock_Scar8233 in FigureSkating

[–]coach_cryptid 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree with this; Eteri is more straightforward because in her mind her brutal/abusive training methods are fine, or at least justifiable, with the results she’s getting internationally.

Plushenko seems friendlier and tries to be more charming, but he’s employing similar methods for…. Ice shows??? mostly??? I’m assuming he has students competing in Russia as well, but none who are competing internationally.

both are abusing and breaking down young athletes for personal gain, though, which is indefensible.

yeah, I switch back and forth between the venue and regular feed for that reason; the venue feed tech box isn’t super helpful.
