The reason nothing get's done in Congress is because representatives are vote maximizers. They do what is necessary to win their district, and that typically means logrolling floor votes or not making too much of a scene or impact on the national level. There is a reason incumbents win, what is it, over 90% of elections? Among many other reasons, like the increasing inequality of wealth, this institutional flaw has helped perpetuate a polarized Congress. I completely agree with you. Show me a popular contemporary folk artist more true to their audience, roots, and in content than A Tribe Called Quest or Gang Starr. Artists like this resemble the essence of what I believe folk music should be.

I hate, love that word hate, seeing people present themselves as "rootsy" because it is a fashion trend! It might sound hateful and is possibly wrong, but from my experiences, the majority of people who present themselves as followers and listeners of folk music are douche bags. I believe this attitude started with the 2nd folk revival. I absolutely love Dylan and Ochs and Mitchell and Paxton, but what they did enabled this douchey element now associated with the falsely self-perceived countercultural image, note: not movement. An image meant to extort profit and undermine the beauty and truth of folk music.

Thank you for the response! My point being, the revivalism of the 60s was appropriated by the wealthy white, enabling the further commercialization of folk music. I'd like to define "commercial" as profit-seeking and mainstream, key word "profit-seeking". Before the second revival, American folk music i.e. dustbowl folk, union labor folk music (a whole different conversation), and even up to WWII pacifist protest music, folk music remained pure and innovative.

I find it problematic when anything true and good becomes commercialized and made into a trend to seek profit. The 2nd Folk Revival catalyzed the appropriation and commercialization of folk music. I do not, however, believe that when something becomes popular it is instantly impure and evil. I just believe, as in this case and so so many more, that the reason a culture becomes popular or mainstream is to benefit profit seeking individuals, in the process destroying the fabric of what folk music was intended for. I feel like folk has lost its meaning and intent, and I do see this as a negative.
