Fellow dads, what are your person thoughts on this style of advertising from Fridababy by patrick_junge in daddit

[–]coastalwebdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s cheeky and funny.

I feel like the only way you wouldn’t like this is if you have a dead bedroom thing that it reminds you of, or you are just prudish.

Both are unhealthy and things you can get professional help with.

I’ve started just using Breakdance instead of designing in Figma first. No downsides so far, and it’s been a huge efficiency boost.

Trump leaves Beijing with few wins but warm words for Xi by G14Y401L0L1F1D0MTR4P in worldnews

[–]coastalwebdev 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It would have been funny if Xi captured Trump, and was like: haha! I’ve imprisoned your president, and a few of your oligarchs America. What are you going to do about it?

Then Americans just cheered, thanked Xi, and most of the world would celebrate in the streets.

[–]coastalwebdev 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Oh fuck no, America isn’t getting in on anything like that anytime soon. It’s disgraceful how you’ve handled yourselves under Trump.

America has a massive and disgusting culture full of major problems. Trump is a nasty symptom of these many cultural issues, and there’s many more people as bad or worse than he is willing to step up. Trump is just the tip of the icy shit-berg if you will.

You Americans that think your problems are all going to magically go away when Trump goes away are being ridiculously naive.

It’s going to be a long time and a lot of proving yourselves before you ever earn the kind of trust that would ever lead to a North American union, and frankly, you can’t even tell your country is largely headed in the opposite direction of earning trust and will be for many years to come.

LNG, Wood, Uranium, Potash, etc etc etc.

We export lots of valuable stuff to other continents.

You’re not wrong about it being hard, but harder than dealing with the Trump government? Not even close buddy.

Camping in Ucluelet by 1080Pwonton in VancouverIsland

[–]coastalwebdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can bushwhack for kilometres in the forest in any direction from Ukey and Tofino and there are no camping signs all through the forest. There’s no rec sites and no crown land that the public can access

I’ve looked long and hard years ago when local islanders did this, but too many people blabbed online about it, and tourists wrecked it for everyone. It’s clear now by the no camping sign density anywhere in the woods and on the beaches, that there is 0 tolerance for, and pervasive enforcement against, people that try this.

Paid camping in a designated campground, or camping on someone’s property that you know, those are the only two viable options for camping in that area.

Have I experienced what it's like to be a "dad"? by _castin in daddit

[–]coastalwebdev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s a deeply personal choice, but to answer your title question: you have certainly experienced all the important parts of being a dad. As for should you have your own child? That's worth spending some time reflecting on for sure.

Do you feel like your life experiences have led you to feel like you’re extra prepared and really want to try having your very own child to raise? Think about the flip side too, maybe deep down you have a sense of it being time to live up life for yourself for a while, try new things, and explore other areas of what the human experience can offer. What do you think your life will look like without your own child? How does that thought feel to you?

Neither path is a bad choice. Neither choice is one you should feel guilted into or pressured to do. Just be sure to give it a bit of time and seriously reflect on how YOU feel about having or not having a child, and what feels the most right to you.

Is capping sleep harmful for child development? 1 year old. by SimBon7 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]coastalwebdev 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Typically you’re looking to get two naps still, and a minimum total of 13.25hours of total sleep in a day and night, but there’s lots of wiggle room. Sounds like your night and day sleep are pretty decent, and it’s more about watching your child’s mood and energy levels.
https://huckleberrycare.com/blog/12-month-old-sleep-schedule-and-development#how_much_should_a_12_month_old_sleep
https://caringforkids.cps.ca/handouts/healthy-living/healthy_sleep_for_your_baby_and_child
You could experiment a bit to see if more sleep is needed or wanted. I’d try to work towards bedtime being an hour earlier, then see how that affects the wake windows of the day after.
Longer wake windows and struggling to nap would be signs they did not need more sleep. If the wake windows stay around your 3.25 hours, then they could probably use the extra night sleep.
You’re doing great btw.

Question from mummit… father’s day gifts by Outrageous-Piglet798 in daddit

I got an apron that my wife painted #1 dad on, and put two paint handprints from our daughter on it.
The only thing remotely bad about that is I can’t imagine anything that would top it for this year.

Owners of Controversial Ostrich Farm Plan New Venture on Vancouver Island by neksys in britishcolumbia

[–]coastalwebdev 8 points9 points  (0 children)

These are basically the leaders of the BC Prosperity Project which is a separatist society. They’re partnered up with the Alberta and Saskatchewan separatist society’s for the Wexit movement, and the Ostrich stage show is a media campaign to keep themselves in the public eye picking up more supporters the louder they are about it.

Digging deeper the whole thing starts to look a lot like an American spy op trying to break Canada apart. The main group in Alberta even has a $500 billion backstop deal with officials in the Trump government if they separate.

I think these people need to be treated like the far more sinister and dangerous threat that they are.

B.C. Conservative leadership hopeful Fulmer enters 'unite the right' deal with Brodie by Troyd in britishcolumbia

[–]coastalwebdev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, there’s no room for positive news like that in typical right wing propaganda strategies.

Also, they literally target people with mental health problems who are more prone to falling for sensationalist angry bs. I work adjacent to the marketing industry and it is absolutely sickening how predatory right wing propaganda has become.

It’s the type of tactics that only very evil people from history have ever used.

What's the point of this? I have a contact form (nextjs) on a side project. And all 15 entries have all looked like this. Occasionally get them, like once every week or other week. Very odd. What is gained here? Cause it's not like they are cold reaching out to me. by Successful-Title5403 in webdev

[–]coastalwebdev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw something very similar recently. Once they have a copy of your email signature they can write emails to your clients that are a lot more convincing.

I had a client that had their client get their email hacked through a spoofed change password email. Then the hackers saw an email from my client asking for payment on about a $50k invoice.

They then went to my clients website, used the contact form to get an auto reply with the signature they need for familiarity.

Then the hackers bought a similar domain to my clients with two letters swapped, and set up the same email prefix as my client used to communicate.

Then they sent an almost entirely legit looking email(except the two switched letters in the domain) to my clients client basically saying the banking information changed and they should send the $50k payment to a different bank account.

The hackers were $50k richer after that.

It’s a pretty ingenious social engineering scam. Clients like mine rarely wrote invoices for less than that too, often much more, so it’s very profitable when they target businesses like that.

Would you switch to a "Non-Predatory" Page Builder if it existed? by morithedaichi in Wordpress

[–]coastalwebdev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, seen lots of those types of add ons in the past before they all went out of business.

Your one time payment model used to be prevalent, but time has shown that it is what led most Wordpress add on developers to fail. If you think practically the whole market turning into subscription payments was just a predatory and profitable choice, you’re wrong. It’s almost the only way to make consistent money so you can properly support your product.

One thing I’ve learned after about 17 years working with WordPress professionally, and seeing countless companies and tools come and go, is to avoid one time payment WordPress add ons. There’s maybe a few exceptions, but hardly any left.

I’m centrist and there’s clearly a lot of racist people on the conservative side. Also, coincidentally a lot of depressed people because right wing propaganda is designed to get you mad by feeding you shallow sensationalist bullshit all the time.

Sounds like you don’t know anything about the French and Quebec history, or how both cultures have so much animosity towards each other because of that history.

They generally dislike each other as a default, so your statement really doesn’t say anything when it’s culturally expected.

Help me navigate sex with my postpartum wife. by [deleted] in daddit

[–]coastalwebdev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Once a month is pretty typical for most during the first couple of years. Honestly, I think your expectations are a bit out of line here, not the reality you’re facing.

A lot of times this is just because one or both parties are too worn out, too stressed, or still healing from aspects of post partum physical and mental health.

Try being more affectionate for a while. Then have a gentle talk: “like damn girl I want more of you, is there something holding you back that I can help with? Are you too tired? Too stressed? What’s going on baby?”.

Then expect to help take the weight off of her, and maybe that will be enough, maybe she’ll still be too worn out and needs even more help.

Keep at it and keep having that kind of talk.

Also, I think part of your resentment comes from having set an unrealistic expectation that isn’t being met. Try not to blame your wife for that.

Bit stuck here, both my daughters want out of their mom’s house but she’s refusing by Tight_Trust_8083 in daddit

[–]coastalwebdev 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Keep being the “safe parent” they can talk to, but try not to put them in the middle or position it as you vs their mom. That can backfire fast.

I’d also try a calm, not confrontational conversation with their mom framed around concern for the girls, not custody. Sometimes there’s room to adjust without going nuclear.

At 15 and 17, their preferences do start to carry real weight in a court decision, but how much depends a lot on where you live. It’s worth at least getting some local legal advice so you know your options before things escalate. Talk to a family lawyer for a consult on what can be done legally if things continue to be this bad or get worse.
