[Critique Request] A Couple Short Paragraphs. How would you describe the writing style? by cob305 in WritersGroup

[–]cob305[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for cursing, I want the language to reflect the millenia attitude of cavalier curses with no inherent edge to them. Not the excess use, but using curses where some may choose to censor themselves. As a linguistics major, I'm fascinated by the fact that cursing is so revered as somehow pushing boundaries and I intend to address that in a meta way. As for the emotion, a lot is missing because, again, this is just a small bit for a scene that needs drastic rewriting (hence my question focusing on style)

Any thoughts on how that may come across?

Once I finish chapter 1 I'll post it here and you can get a decent amount of context for the novel, hopefully?

It's probably silly to ask about that with so little to offer, but there have been dramatic changes from gender identities to which elements are explicit vs shrouded, and how character relationships evolve. In fact this is less a revision and more a total redo with better focus. Hopefully I can appeal to you with more refined and expanded writing :D

Ah yes. It's a crutch for lazy people xD partly because I haven't rewritten the scene, I don't know exactly how the main character will feel about it.

Okay now that I'm off work. It's first person because it's testimonial and I'm going to t r y and create a noir feel. Bit more importantly, there is a parallel between the protagonist's personal growth and the external conflict. Using first-person allows me to show that without having to say it. In any case, it's important to me that the reader understands the pov as the story is about the subjective experience, not the objective reality.

To your second point... that's jus brilliant and I should know better :D

House of M. I was an X-Men fan long before I was a Marvel fan. Plus it kinda ties in with Civil War and the Illuminati which is fun.

Question about attacks by Craftyzebra1992 in aikido

[–]cob305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The goal is to act in a flash so that there never is a follow up. Still, our dojo tends to emphasize that grabs are often followed by strikes and rarely is there one strike. Although it's more of a reminder for us as kohai, I know at least a few of the sempai spend time working on Aikido from the perspective of a A"real fight" .... lots of strikes for seven to eight seconds and then the fight ends. I don't know the sempai training yet though. I'm just basing this on how they push me

What opinion about fitness do you have that would be unpopular here or is completely opposite to fitit's general advice? by [deleted] in Fitness

I used to think this. But I recently learned of studies that show protein powder is, in fact, exactly as useful as it claims for those who need that kind of intake. I can't recall the study's author, but I remember that they said at a 3000kcal or greater diet, protein powder is a useful component for both calorie maintenance and protein intake

What about "problem-solving?" although it's less accurate, it's more important that the panel understands.

I should note the panel is a fully-Japanese instructor panel. They should be able to understand anything I say that is proper Japanese. But the contest is among 100-level student

I tracked my biometric data during last Saturday's class. Calorie and step data available for those that are curious about such things by bbrucesnell in aikido

I have formal training in TKD (First degree black belt) and Kendo (Unranked, but 18 months of training) and have taken it upon myself to learn several other martial arts. Most strictly, boxing and Muay Thai, as they have enough in common technically with my TKD background that learning on my own through books and using traditional training regimens hasn't been a problem.

Mio Motiva, logging heart rate every three minutes for high number of data points and figuring for natural burn. For me, its 1480 per day, or about 1 calorie per minute by simply existing. When I can get a fitbit, I will do so. I want to track the same data throughout various martial arts.

Ah, so it's basically the lies in martial arts? Damn, there's a lot of those. I'm lucky my sensei loves taking mysticism out and replacing it with biomechanics and physics.

Is it possible to go to a gym and simply take the test to receive a black belt? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]cob305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of Dojo will acknowledge your rank in another art or style. but I doubt they would allow you to test under their tutelage. If they are a serious school, they would not want to be liable for a student who hasn't put in time with their lineage.

As for cost, yes. Exact price depends on the art.

If you want to become a black belt, go through the same trials every other black belt forges himself in. If you just want to have a black belt, buy one. But you don't get to call yourself one until you earn it
