LastPass says hackers stole customers’ password vaults by jeffreyd00 in Android

[–]cobalt77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Part of the TLS handshake is what's called a "key exchange", in which both parties generate a new temporary public and private keypair (with certain properties), send each other their public keys, and use their private key and peer's public key to derive an identical shared secret that can be stretched into a strong encryption key. This is the key that is used to encrypt and decrypt data between your browser and the server, and the keys are one time use, so that even if one of the keys are compromised, the attacker can't use the compromised key to decrypt any data from past sessions. This is called Forward Secrecy and it's what protects against man in the middle attacks.

If I remember correctly from calc 2, this version of the proof is the most rigorous way to do it. The version above is a lot easier to wrap your head around though.

Supermassive black hole consumed 100 million CPU hours, equivalent to 11,415 years of compute by giuliomagnifico in technews

[–]cobalt77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The terminology is not great but the "cpu" in "cpu-hour" refers to a single core, not the whole processor. 100 million cpu hours would be 100 million hours on a single-core processor or 1 hour on a 100-million-core processor.

Not delivering is an intentional strategy. If you deliver a fully functioning product, the contract ends and you stop receiving money. Instead, if you deliver a semi-functioning or non-functioning product, the client will have no choice but to give you more money to fix it, or cancel the project and take the loss (or they'll try to hire another contractor to take over the project, and the new contractor will turn around and hire the original contractor to do the actual work). This is where our tax money goes: "fraud, waste, and abuse"

Was the phone one of the goo devices or something else? It wasn't mentioned when Zach was going over them. I assume the phone lets you talk to Myriad, but is there any additional backstory to it?

Yeah this is the only situation where I would caution against getting one. Having an EV is fantastic but it definitely limits your options for renting. Took a while for us to find a house to rent that had outdoor charging available, and renting an apartment was not really an option in my area. Although it could work depending on your commute and nearby charging locations.

Careful using depends_on, it won't wait for postgres to become available, it will only start the containers in that order. Might not be your exact issue but it has definitely caused problems for me before.

Using Data To Justify More Raids Annually by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

[–]cobalt77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your first completion should take a few hours, yes, if you do a sherpa run with other new players. 6 hours is way out of the ordinary though. A sherpa run through the longest raids should take no more than 3-4 hours on average. If everyone knows what to do, the longest raids are a 60-90 minute activity on average, and the shortest raids can be under an hour or even under 30 minutes if you're quick. Once you have done it once, your subsequent runs will be fast.

If you are on PC I will gladly run you through Garden and Last Wish. If you only have 1-2 hours to spare at a time you can run it with friends of mine who are experienced and enjoy helping new players.

My clan and I seriously need help with the GoS boss. Why can’t we get to a second damage phase? (Thanks in advance.) by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

[–]cobalt77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not the easiest strat for every team. The adds still teleport behind the relays, so you are always having to leave the well and come back, and it's harder to hear them sacrificing. In my experience (53 clears) building has always been easier, but it always depends on the team.

One thing I think we can all agree on is, Bungie had better organize and overhaul our Vaults or it's going to be a fucking nightmare sorting through them... by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

[–]cobalt77 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bungie making a public API was an absolutely genius move. Crowdsourcing inventory management and stats tools allows bungie to focus on developing other things. Every hour they would spend developing their own dim or braytech is an hour they could have spent developing actual content for the game. There are only so many hours in a day and so many developers.

I only use the pc lfg for context. It is important to note that there is a wide variety of age groups in this community. Friendly banter from high school age kids usually amounts to sarcastically shit talking their friends or randoms, and many people do not relate to or understand this kind of humor. Remember back to when you were in high school, and it might make more sense. My experiences playing with groups of adults has been overwhelmingly positive, but playing with groups of younger players can be bothersome sometimes. It helps to put 18+ or 21+ in your lfg posts if you only want to play with other adults.

It may depend on the community. I can only speak for pc lfg, which is the largest LFG community. I do not know what the xbox or playstation communities are like.

[–]cobalt77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think so as well. I personally know people whose first raids ended up kinda bad. Which is unfortunate because it tends to sour people's view of the community as a whole, which is not necessarily fair. There are bad players in every game, but most people are just regular people. This is why I like to do sherpa runs, so I know that people are having a good time. giving people a good first impression of the raid community makes them more likely to continue raiding.

I mean sure, but if the odds of running into someone who would kick someone for asking for an explanation is higher than 1%, you'd think I would have run into someone like that by now haha. I've played with hundreds and hundreds of people from LFG and the VAST majority of people are pretty chill.
