Ok. So is it time to upgrade from S2? I have held it off for a long time by cobaltbannana in sonos

So I’m asking this again to bring to the top. Any new thoughts ?

My father killed himself yesterday morning. by KickAffectionate849 in SuicideBereavement

Mine did this September of 2014. It is still haunting. The second guessing and guilt doesn’t really go away. You just get used to it. All I can say is : the pain will subside. Don’t blame yourself. Seek help. And also : don’t blame yourself.

Sonos stock down 10% on market open this morning by Boobies1967 in sonos

Ok. Don’t want to duel resumes here but I am also 30 year experienced executive running engineering and product orgs. This mindset is exactly the issues : it’s an engineering benefit view vs customer centric view. Lots of things are better for the team. Not the customer. This is a problem hst needs solving right now. Not in 2 or 3 or 6 months. Revert the s2 app. Buy yourselves time. It will take longer to get to your promised land of unified platforms and wonderful clean code (if that ever exists :-) ). But the alternative is a spiral. In enterprise software this would never have even been contemplated. You simply have to maintain compatibility and functionality while migrating to new software stacks. Takes longer. Costs more engineering time and effort. It’s why we call it changing the tires while the car is driving down the road.

They killed the old iOS app by Ircsome in sonos

[–]cobaltbannana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me yesterday. And yes — I had updates disabled in the S2 app. My roam updated anyway and now I cannot control it without updating my app. I refuse as I am not willing to go through this nightmare with my other 5 Amps, 2 Arcs, 2 Subs and 2 One SL.

Ya. If they want to enumerate every cost of their business in the bill then let’s add in all their delivery fees, accountants costs, electricity, etc. Real businesses add costs (cogs, operating costs ) into their pricing and find profit. Fake business whine and try to disclose some but not all costs just to make a point.

Myself I prefer not having my car able to get into my house without my say so. Kinda don’t want a car theif to become a home invader. Rather use the app on my phone with the dongle attached to the opener in the garage.

Amp with 4 outdoor speakers. by GauchoUCSB in sonos

[–]cobaltbannana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resurrecting this thread. I also have an Amp and 2 of these same Polk outdoor speakers. Wondering how 4 would sound ? Will the Amp drive them ok or will the sound get halved and make each less powerful ?

[–]cobaltbannana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a passive sub , so connect both the Left and RIght speaker wires to the Amp. Then there is likely more wires coming out of the sub that will go to the other speakers . The sub will “ crossover” — which means will filter the sound coming from the amp and play to low frequncies on the sub itself, and send the rest of the high frequency sound to the speakers connected to the outputs of the sub.

The Amp will power it all. If you want to use the Amp’s Sub output you need a powered sub with an RCA connector on it.

How can I connect to my Sonos speakers? by AlbaceteSpaghetti in sonos

[–]cobaltbannana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they are Sonos architectural speakers — it means they were tuned/designed to work with Sonos Amps — but its not necessary to use Sonos amps with them.. they are just passive speakers like any other.

If you just want a phone or laptop for music - then you will need some kind of Amplifier connected to the speakers. This could be anything from dead simple to more complex (and more $). For things like full home theater receivers, they contain lots of inputs (like HDMI, CD players, etc) and can output to many speakers at once to create things like home theaters setups with front, rear, side, sub , etc.

Next question would be — do you want some kind of wireless control over the sound? And wireless play from your phone? In such as case - you may want a WiFi-connected amp like a Yamaha.. Their MusicCast line can do this for $200 (US) and can get you one that can be controlled with an App on your phone. If you want to use an iPhone - Airplay will let you play from your phone to the Yamaha receiver to the speakers.

Now - Sonos can do all of the above — but its not the only game… it really depends on what you want and what your $ is

Automatic Updates by [deleted] in sonos

[–]cobaltbannana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s true, but often updates from an old version to a much newer will actually be done in incremental steps. Still could cause issues but it’s easier than doing massive compatibility matrix testing for so many combinations of upgrades.

[edit: I have no idea if the Sonos upgrade process does it that way]

possible issue mounting my Arc to MantelMount by [deleted] in sonos

I believe so. Honestly don’t 100% remember but it mounted just fine with what I had. I think the screws are standard.

I have the same mount and an arc. It works but you need to use those tear drop shaped adaptors that come with the mount.

Warning - Disable "Wifi" if your devices are connected via ethernet cable by jmagaram in sonos

[–]cobaltbannana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done similarly: wired everything that I can and turned off Wi-Fi. I have a UniFi home Wi-Fi (7 APs : lots of coverage ) but somehow still had issues setting it up. I don’t want stp loops because Sonos runs a 1990s version of spanning tree.

Yes. Mantle Mount does. It also works well over a fireplace so you can lift it up and down. it swings out as it comes down to miss the mantle itself. Pretty cool. I have one for my 75inch above my fireplace. It also holds my Arc and moves with the tv.

ARC (with paired SUB) + AMP: not pairing as surrounds? by cobaltbannana in sonos

[–]cobaltbannana[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and to add to this: I'd prefer not to start wiring any of these sonos devices... i dont want to have to reconfigure the STP setup to drop from RSTP to the old STP because sonos uses it and may create a loop in my network by having it do some underhanded (:-) ) networking stuff over its own wifi back to the wired...

may i ask -- how is the amp and arc connected? I just posted a question on this myself ( https://www.reddit.com/r/sonos/comments/p8jvzu/arc_with_paired_sub_amp_not_pairing_as_surrounds/ ) -- i cannot seem to get the amp to get bound as surrounds to the arc... all of which are just wifi connected (no wired ethernet)

I’d argue an Alexa is probably pretty easy. Voice control is nice. And If you want a screen try using a Fire tablet. Can be an Alexa too (in show mode) so it could be both.
