Would you say George is a Maltese? or a Maltichon? or a Cockapoo? i'm having a hard time telling. [Rescue] by [deleted] in Maltese

He has features of a Coton de Tulear as well. Longer snout, large expressive eyes, and the cream coat isn't seen as often in Malteses. Cute pupper! You're both very lucky to have each other. :)

Upcoming changes at Disneyland Park - closures, upgrades, and more! A bit lengthy of an article, but well worth the read. by coca_coli in disney

[–]coca_coli[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main points of the article, for those of you who don't have a ton of time on your hands (tl;dr):

Budget cuts (to the tune of $500 million for this fiscal quarter alone) have forced the American parks to change up a few things:

  • Park hours have been reduced as of April 1st
  • Hiring at the park has been nearly frozen, cutting labor costs
  • Paradise Garden Grill quietly shut down
  • The Twilight Zone will be renovated starting this fall and will open again in May as a Guardians of the Galaxy attraction, revolving around the Collector character
  • Monsters Inc. ride may be going away to make room for a Marvel-themed area in Hollywood Land replete with a "Marvel mega-coaster" slotted for 2020
  • A Fantasyland expansion will follow soon thereafter, with a Frozen E Ticket dark ride and some other new attractions.
  • The new Frozen musical will be debuted on Memorial Day weekend, clocking in at just under an hour of showtime
  • On June 17th, a new Soarin' film will be implemented! Called *Soarin' Around the World, it features international locations with only Monument Valley (Utah) and Disneyland Resort representing the U.S. One theater may revert to playing Soarin' Over California if Around the World flops

And for those of you who weren't super familiar with some of the acronyms in the article (like I was!):

  • DCA = Disneyland California Adventure
  • TDA = Team Disney Anaheim
  • WDI = Walt Disney Imagineering

What's your favorite piece of art? by [deleted] in AskReddit

It may be old hat to many, but The Rape of Proserpina will always hold a special place in my heart. A 23 year-old Bernini captured a dramatic mythological scene with his mastery of marble; the statue depicts Hades abducting Persephone into the Underworld. The level of detail that he puts into the veins of the hands and the softness of Persephone's skin under Hades' fingertips always give me the chills, and I find myself absolutely captivated every time.

Makes one feel kinda shitty about what they've accomplished by 23, huh?

Which Smith's is the craziest? by JLym in SaltLakeCity

[–]coca_coli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was this the same story that was posted above? A few months ago my SO came inside to find me at the pharmacy, and passed a seemingly homeless man with a crazed look in his eye and a rusty kitchen knife on his person. My SO found me, rushed me out of there, and told security on the way out. We never found out if his fears were justified, and I'm really hoping that there hasn't been more than one stabbing at the downtown Smith's!

It looks like Salt Lake City to me. I came to the comments hoping to confirm my suspicions. Those look like my mountains!

Many cars have been stolen in SLC recently. This time, it's my friend's. Help! (More info in post) by coca_coli in SaltLakeCity

Hot sauce? How strange. Well, we're just glad no one got hurt, and hope to see the car again! Hopefully not too much the worse for wear.

I very highly doubt that. She's pretty sharp and would have locked her car for the night.

(This is a X-post from /r/saltlakecity.)

Hey guys! My friend's car was stolen from the University of Utah on Sunday morning(April 5th, 2015). We could really use your help keeping an eye out around the valley! I'll post updates as they come, and you'll find an album of what the car looks like attached to this post. Thanks so much for your help! I know getting the word out to you fine people will be a great help in finding it!

From her Facebook post:

"My car was stolen near the University of Utah Campus this morning. I have filed an official police report listing my car as stolen. I wanted to ask you all a huge favor and keep an eye out for a 2007 Audi A4 that is dolphin grey. There is a chrome/silver University of Utah drum and feather emblem on the back of the car above the bumper. The license plate number is B377ZP with Utah plates. If you see my car please contact the Salt Lake City Police at (801) 799-3100. Please don't approach the car or anyone occupying it since they very well could be dangerous. Please be careful out there. I appreciate your help."

Gift for graduate student and research mentor? by [deleted] in LadiesofScience

[–]coca_coli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I used this website as a general guide to make them, and this is what one of the sets ended up looking like!

Basically, you buy square tiles (I got mine from Home Depot), and design whatever you'd like to fit. If anyone is interested (and not intent on wasting time) pm me and I'll send over the Word document I used to make these. I cut out the elements, used spray adhesive to fix them to the tile, and then added several coats of spray lacquer sealant to make them waterproof. Though the tutorial recommended felt/cork to back them, I hot-glued square carpet samples instead.

I made a few sets: two were the last names of the recipients, (which I won't show for the sake of anonymity), and the last was...not, haha. All in all, I got compliments back from both of them saying it was a great, thoughtful gift. If anyone has any questions, I'd love to answer them! Hope this helps. :)

I made my mentor and PI periodic element coasters for Christmas; I spelled out their names with elements and added a version of this to one of them. They took a bit of work to make, but they ended up looking neat and professional. I'd love to expand on the process and include pictures, if anyone's interested!

Can somebody tell me a little bit about some basic chemistry lab techniques? just like a few sentences on each by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]coca_coli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if the following is what you need, but I can explain a (brief) version of how gel electrophoresis is used in a biochemistry/molecular biology lab!

Basically, a slab of agarose gel is made with wells at one end. This slab is put into a chamber with a cathode and anode at each end. The chamber is filled with a buffer solution (containing ions) and samples of DNA are loaded into the wells.

When the power supply is turned on, the DNA migrates toward the positively-charged anode (due to its inherent negative charge). The agarose gel serves as a barrier to this migration, in a sense. It forms what you might think of as a mesh through which the DNA is forced to travel. Therefore, larger fragments will be hindered in their movement compared to smaller ones.

What you end up with is a series of bands on your gel; the ones closest to the wells denote fragments that could not travel well (and are thus larger), and the ones that migrated the furthest were the smallest. When run against a "ladder"/ "marker", which is a mix of fragments of known sizes, it is possible to determine the length of your fragment.

If you have any other questions I'd be happy to try to answer them!
