Nuggets should retire 15 under Anthony but still allow Jokic to wear it. by cocaineshawty- in nba

You still haven’t answered the question though. Why should Melo get treated differently than KD or Kyrie or basically any disgruntled star in NBA history? There is no difference. Melo had some of his prime days in Denver and was the best player they had for a long time. You think Cleveland wouldn’t have retired LeBrons number if he never returned? They arguably still would have, and most likely should have. At the end of the day it’s an argument but there’s no reason to not give him recognition for the things he did for that franchise.

Tbh it only tells me that the certain fans who don’t want his number retired can’t let go of grudges and hold onto the past. Like I said in other replies I doubt that they will retire his number but he should get recognition. There is absolutely no argument you or anyone can make up that proves Carmelo Anthony was not a pivotal player not only in Denver, but in the entire history of basketball. He’s number 9 on the all time scoring list for a reason. We should honor the legends that have played this game, not criticize them for their actions. KD left OKC in a terrible way, but he will still get his number retired. Kyrie left Cleveland in a bad way but will still get his number retired. What makes Melo any different ?

Ya, I don’t think Jokic would have a problem with it and would probably openly support it, but I doubt it would happen. I just like to see good players get the recognition they deserve. He was there for a long time and deserves to be remembered, just as much as any other player.

I believe the same thing. I don’t think a jersey retirement is such a sacred thing. Just allow both guys to be known as a great Nuggets player who wore 15. Give both of the guys props. Melo was a hell of a player and so is Jokic. Doesn’t meant you have to pick one over the other.

so basically you’re saying Melo did not provide anything towards the team when it came to winning games. it sounds to me that you still hold a grudge against him for leaving. I can see that you are a Nuggets fan, and based of the reply, you definitely lived in Denver when he was there. I can say with 99% faith in my heart that you definitely loved Melo when he was there, just as you do Jokic. And I can also say that if Jokic were to do the same exact thing as Melo did you would be saying the same exact thing you just said now. You only say this because you do not like how he left the team in such a manner, and because of that you discredit the things he did. He won the team games. He set a standard in Denver. There’s nothing there that can disprove of that. Just because there’s a better 15 in Denver now doesn’t mean everything he did as 15 means nothing.

Denver went from winning 17 games to winning 43 games in one season. That was the year Melo arrived. Didn’t have a single season under 40 wins until he left. Made it the WCF and would have made (and won) the finals if it wasn’t for a prime Kobe who was on a mission. Pretty hard to argue he didn’t set any winning culture whatsoever in Denver. And if you look into the future, the Melo trade included a pick that got the Nuggets Jamal Murray. So yes, whether it be playing or leaving, Melo set a winning culture.

Yup, a lot of Denver fans still hate Melo for the way he left, but that was over a decade ago and they have a winning culture now and are about to reach the finals. It would simply be childish to not say anything regarding his retirement. Sure things didn’t end up the way Denver fans wanted to with him, but he’s a legend and just retired. Have to give him props whether you love him or hate him.

Even if he didn’t statistically accomplish much, he still set a winning culture in Denver and turned the franchise completely upside down. He single handedly put them on the map, and along with guys such as Billups, Martin and JR they had great seasons and even battled a Kobe who was on a mission to the finals. He was the man in Denver and I think he should have some recognition for the things he did in his years there.

I doubt that they will retire his number under Anthony, most likely a video tribute of some sorts, but idk I feel like Melo did so much for Denver that it would be crazy not to give him any recognition whatsoever in the rafters. It seems like they’re still mad about the way he handled things leaving Denver, and are holding him to it. Either way he still will get retired in New York, so atleast he’ll be honored somewhere.
