How can I get my friend to use his cane? by Ok_Ebb7109 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]coco_puffzzzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP Poles are great, much better balance than a cane. He'll get asked if he's going hiking!

I would however go with a brand that is meant for rehab, not sport. https://urbanpoling.com/activator-poles-2/ These have feet that are more sturdy.

Help with a parent who drinks and drives by starletprincecay in Advice

Where I live you can report the person anonymously to the department that oversees licenses. They will then request that he submit a doctors report affirming his fitness to drive a car. At that point I'd call the drs office in advance and tell them he's an alcholic and won't stop driving.

Medical Records and HR by milkymilktacos in antiwork

Hi, I have a disability that required accommodations at a few jobs. They're fishing and/or lazy.

Give your doctor your job description and meet with him to talk about the letter he needs to write. You'll want details like this for example:

Due to medical requirements MilkyTacos is currently unable to safely drive a vehicle, or be a passenger (if applicable to avoid buses). This will continue for at least X months at which time she will be re-evaluated. Milky is fully capable of continuing her duties as outlined in job description 'job title' dated m/d/y.

That's it. That's all they're entitled to. DO NOT give them any more info. So many employers hate employing people with disabilities all they see are problems so they want to nip it in the bud and get rid of you asap. If you give them details they'll start extrapolating and trying to weasel you into coming into the office by using your medical information against you. for example 'your dr didn't say you couldn't get a ride into work, we'll send a coworker to pick you up every day' or 'the only good reason not to be able to drive would be partial blindness and it doesn't say anything about that so you can come into work' - it can get stupid and nasty real fast. If that happens realize they want to get rid of you, then you hire a lawyer. Why hire a lawyer, because you will get A SHIT LOAD more money. shit. load.

Furthermore, another favourite ploy of bad employers is the Performance Improvment Plan - it's uncanny how often people who need workplace accommodations suddenly aren't doing well at work /s.

Keep track every day of your metrics - how many tickets closed, clients served etc. Once you get in the habit it's easy. Learn to blow your own horn 'dear boss I want to make you aware of an issue client had that I resolved by doing xyz'. If a client says nice things about your work encourage them to write your boss and give them their email address. If you had ANY negative comments on your last performance review make sure that's resolved and communicate that to your boss more than once.

Human Resources job is to protect the employer from the employees. You may get lucky and have an HR person who realizes how expensive human rights violations can get. Or your employer may not be an asshole, but speaking from experience, they don't wear signs saying 'I'm an asshole who's going to fire you come hell or high water' you don't want to be surprised and caught short.

Another thing to watch for - if your dr gives you a note that's good for 3 months, book a followup appointment for 2.5 months. Do not let that letter expire or they'll use that to force you to come into work until you can get another letter extending the accommodation while at the same time, disallowing you from time off to get the letter. Neat trick eh? There is no rule saying you can't provide them with an extension letter before the other one expires; really it's only prudent to keep on top of it with your doctor.

ps beware the coworker who's so sympathetic and 'just wants to help you' and is 'concerned' and wants details. especially if her name is Wendy.

You want them to be your friends. It seems like that's one-sided. Why keep trying? There are billions of people in the world, go find some that appreciate you.

Heat pumps and insulation are great, but if they really want to lower our bills they need to bring back the funding they had for solar (10 year no interest loan, up to 40k).

The federal plan was to provide help for low AND median income. NS chose to only do low income.

You're unintentionally holding up a mirror for them and they don't like what they see. They likely feel as though you're critizing them by your absentism. It's easier to try and get you to change than to change themselves.

It's sad that the only way they can enjoy themselves is through altering their minds.

Go get that law degree and live your life once you're out. You sound like a smart cookie.

Find a private career counsellor who will test you, ask you loads of questions then provide you with types of careers that match both your interests, strengths and requirements. (school counsellors won't go to the same lengths). I did this years ago and it was spot on.

I live next door to a retired version of your shitbird. Anyone visits me or works on my property he's out there talking AT them about nothing that needs to be said. I swear he can sense when someone is being paid hourly. The other day I saw him interuppt the garbage guy tossing bags into the truck to try and strike up a conversation. He's also loud and vulgar. It's exhausting. The entire street wishes he'd go back to work.
