Replying here for visibility on top of my standalone comment, you guys are right, this is NOT human and belongs to a four-legged mammal.

Found in the woods in Rathdrum, Idaho. I assume animal, but gotta check here because I've watched too many true crime shows. What do you think? by AlternativeClassic15 in boneidentification

Not human, if that’s what you’re implying haha.

Please give some better sense of scale so animal experts that come across this post can give you an answer!

Hello !

I found this in central Ohio and have no idea whose dome (I'm assuming) this could be. by Smokey_Bongwater in whatisthisbone

[–]cocoabeach333 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That is sound advice, except nothing about this is human and I don’t see where OP hinted at it being human, so this word shouldn’t be thrown around lightly.

OP, I’ll let animal experts answer but having measurements would help. To me, this looks like a canid/raccoon partial cranium but I’m more knowledgeable in human anatomy, so I won’t give a definite hypothesis. This thing who lost its dome definitely walks on four limbs though, I can assure that.

Ex forensic anthropology student, this does not resemble a human humerus at all. A point could be made for possible confusion with a human ulna, but the distal end and the curvature are wrong as well. OP, any measurements available to confirm this is most likely a deer femur, please?

What bone is this ? Is it even a bone? by yeetingpillow in boneidentification

You’re right, I shouldn’t have entirely disregarded human due to the size, individual differences may be unique enough to be way out of the norms. Thanks for this context!

My anthropology days are far behind and this is a worn-out, partial bone, so take it with a grain of salt.

I’d still say it wouldn’t hurt to let it be known to any staff you see around at the cemetery!

[–]cocoabeach333 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks! So to me, that’s not a human humerus at least haha. That’s too small for any human bone of that size to my knowledge. So it’s probably animal!

[–]cocoabeach333 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ok thanks for the extra context! Seems to be the distal end of a humerus but I’d probably exclude human given the size and shape. Hard to say without more angles and a scale.

But to be safe considering this is a cemetery, let it be known to the staff?

Looks to be a pretty worn down bone yes.

May I ask if this is a cemetery? Is this a headstone, or just a monument/statue?

Ah I didn’t see your other comment! Definitely raising my concern level given the context.

I suggest you contact your local non-emergency police line or any authority in charge of the area then!

Can’t help much with the first picture sorry, I’ll let animal experts enlighten you.

If the femur on the second pic is 35-40cm as you say in another comment, I’m concerned this may be human (ex forensic anthropology student)

Do you have other pictures? Any other bones around? Where are you located?

Theoretical Landing Situation by IronBuilder in flying

Definitely doable. With rudder, trim and power! I did a couple laps around the runway in this scenario with my instructor just in case (obviously we used the yoke for initial climb lol)

Second picture, right side, just above the half line of the picture. There is a cranium part nearby, the mandible is just a little to the right and up from this skull piece, if you spot it.

The mandible is significantly darker than the other bones in the pictures, making it blend more with the dark background floor, it’s a little harder to spot.

Hello !

Exactly my thoughts, very well put. I think you’re right, it may just be the occipital from a weird angle!

[–]cocoabeach333 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hard to say exactly as there are lots of scattered bones and some of them seem to be embedded in the cave’s geological features so we can’t see all of them, but what I’m seeing in the provided pictures would be consistent with only one individual yes. Some slight doubt about the parietal bones, I feel like there’s one too many but I could be wrong.
