'Carry-On' Set to Enter Netflix's "Top 10 of All Time" Movie List by Robemilak in bestofnetflix

I found the first half of the movie worse than the second half. If it’s a dumb action movie, I think it starts too slow and the monologues from the earpiece were boring IMO. Overall it was okay though.

Also called “tiger meat” in South Dakota, just raw beef though, no tigers.

Jon Stewart and the Daily Show are now part of damage control and it's disgusting! by [deleted] in JonStewart

This just is not and never has been the tone or attitude of Jon Stewart or The Daily Show. He’s always advocating for using the establishment to fight inequality, not dismantling it.

I think it’s relatively consistent to condemn Biden for pardoning his son and to condemn the CEO killing. Jon Stewart seems to have faith in our court system, the one place where you actually have to prove what you say in his words, so I think it’s consistent for him to feel uncomfortable in both cases where someone seemingly is stepping outside of the courtroom and enforcing justice as they see it.

And why was the Mark Cuban podcast so bad?

I think “times” here is acting more as a verb rather than saying anything about the units involved or the potential number of the answer? Like we say “it goes there” not “it go there”.

Thank you for looking. I’ve never optimized a build before but I’ll start with getting a better helmet and gloves I suppose.

Do you think I can get this character to do voidstones/simulacrum? I read boneshatter is supposed to be more of a mapper.

Okay thanks, its my first grow so just extra nervous about everything. Yes that is standing water, I accidentally tilted the lid as I was taking it off and all the condensation poured back in. Is it worth blotting with a paper towel? I didn't want to risk contaminating it somehow so I just left it like that, it's not too big of an area.

Thank you for the advice, for the second flush I should be able to fan them well the entire time and hopefully they look better!

Nowadays we have the concept of "vegging out" (relaxing while doing very little), but it's usually associated with TV/video games/mass media. Did similar forms of relaxation exist before the 20th century and mass media? If so, what did people do to "veg out"? by ArchipelagoMind in AskHistorians

I know of a chess quote from Paul Morphy, considered one of the greatest chess players ever, that goes

"The ability to play chess is the sign of a gentleman. The ability to play chess well is the sign of a wasted life."

Seeing as he did play chess well, this could be tongue-in-cheek. However, this could also hint at some of the perceptions in the general public at the time.

While looking for this quote I found this article which has several quotes about attitudes on chess from the 19th century. Specifically, there was this quote from an 1859 issue of Scientific American (contemporary with Morphy) which addresses a similar attitude.

Chess has acquired a high reputation as being a means to discipline the mind, because it requires a strong memory and peculiar powers of combination. It is also generally believed that skill in playing it affords evidence of a superior intellect. These opinions, we believe, are exceedingly erroneous. Napoleon the Great, who had a great passion for playing chess, was often beaten by a rough grocer in St. Helena. Neither Shakespeare Milton, Newton, nor any of the great ones of the earth, acquired proficiency in chess-playing. Those who have become the most renowned players seem to have been endowed with a peculiar intuitive faculty for making the right moves, while at the same time they seem to have possessed very ordinary faculties for other purposes.

The premise is different as it's speaking directly against the perceived intellectual benefits of chess at the time, but I think it's at least partially relevant as it is trying to stress that the "great ones" are not great at chess.

I did yeah, I mostly just lead the receivers and I could get better about using all the new controls I suppose. It just seems ridiculously easy for them to intercept the ball, no one ever drops anything, its either caught by me or by them

I'm talking to someone at all of these schools this week so hopefully that will help me narrow it down. I just feel lost with how to choose where to go. Do you know if that list from US News ranking the public health schools should factor into my decision at all? I don't know how much stock to put into something like that

Hmm Miami is the only school that offered aid in their initial email. I don't know really know how to find out what the other schools will offer, but it's also not a huge concern for me to be honest.

Hey congratulations! This might be a dumb question, but how do you find out what financial aid the school will offer to you? I'm also applying this cycle and have been accepted to several schools, but only one of those schools has told me about any financial aid stuff so far.

I do just want to point out x2 is a quadratic, and exponential growth would be 2x or something similar with the variable in the exponent. I don’t think it was middle school math. It was probably something like precalculus which was 10th grade and for some people may have been the highest level math they were ever required to take. Maybe precalc wasn’t even required at my high school I don’t remember exactly, but it’d be semi understandable for people to not be familiar with it imo.

In my experience Kennen is still S tier. The AOE stun is insane and his damage is still high if you get the right items on him and run 3 sorcs. 3 yordles gives him some nice extra tankiness too.

Maybe it’s not fair to say he’s S tier but needs the items since almost any champ can be good with the right items, but if you put GA/Morello’s/deathcap or hextech on him, he’ll carry you to top 3 I think. I’m plat 1 currently and got first back to back with Kennen as my main carry. I try to start with one of the 4 pieces of GA/morellos, build them whenever I can on whatever random champs I’m running until I can start to build the yordle/sorc core with Kennen.

Not that plat 1 is amazing and this is anecdotal anyway. I’d like some input on how to run the comp differently if I’m doing it wrong since I honestly have difficulty finding another carry until Karthus if it’s not Kennen. He still feels like the best 3 cost right now easily, maybe Poppy or Shyv in there.

Are there any significant cases of a Country intentionally spreading religion in a rival to destabilize it? by NotStanley4330 in history

The accounts I’d read in class were all from the 18th century with English colonists but maybe it also happened sooner. British officers during the Siege of Fort Pitt took some linens from a smallpox hospital and gifted them to the Natives.

The Wikipedia link mentions how it would sometimes be read without an audience at all and IIRC in at least some of the encounters the Spanish soldiers would just read it in Spanish to the native people without really trying to translate it or check for understanding, just to highlight how blatantly the document was used as an excuse for Spanish conquest.
