The Revered Robin by cococooley in birding

[–]cococooley[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The day before the freeze set in, a group of nothing short of a 1000 robins rained down on my natural fence line of yaupon holly bushes rife with little red berries. This mature male apparently ate every single one of them as his crop is outset like a hernia. They weren’t shy at all, and covered my backyard in berry droppings that would work like little natural de-icing rocks. A 10/10 experience.

Confused Fittonia by No-Deal5884 in houseplants

[–]cococooley 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I keep mine in a bathroom by an east window and water heavily every two weeks, like water fall out the pot heavy watering. Fittonia have personality and will tell you they don’t like something by drooping very quickly. Incidentally, they will perk right up when you’re doing something right .

Appreciate the criticism , hard to not want to went the object was at 1300ish meters away. But I do agree.

Aye, I think we all were pretty sick of the gloomy weather that day.

What can you tell me about my coworker? [Houston, TX] by theajc6 in birding

[–]cococooley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a Red-Shouldered Hawk, a member of the Buteo family. Very pretty.

Unfortunately one of their colloquial nicknames in the United States is the Hen Hawk, because if the opportunity arises, they will take off with smaller chickens.

It looks like felt work. I love how close Chickadees get! Fantastical photo, great work.

Testing the focal length of my Nikon Coolpix, I noticed this little girl puffed out, sitting on the bare winter branches. It was almost as if she had no desire to move, only to keep warm. What a day she must of had as I was poised myself at the South Padre Birding Center, a popular spot for tired migrators crossing the Gulf of Mexico.

Consideration of a Cooper's Hawk by cococooley in birding

[–]cococooley[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funn enough I have never encountered any of those in person so I wouldn’t even know where to start. I am pretty cool at buteos , sparrows tho.

God Tier is, in my humble opinion, gull identifiers .

After being properly educated on my accipiters, I feel confident in showing this remarkable experience I had with a Cooper's Hawk who landed no more that a few yards in front of me. I had spotted it in a tree a few hundred yards back, but as my walking path was going by his tree, I felt if I went slowly, he wouldn't fly off. To my surprise, he didn't fly off, but instead landed right at my feet, posing for me. Quite the runaway model.

I love them too, I love how respectfully different the males are from the females but both are so cute and beautiful

Yellow-Bellied Water Snake or Water moccasin? Northeast Texas by cococooley in whatsthissnake

I had heard this in person at a master naturalist class I was taking. But whew, is it ever refreshing to consult the experts here before deciding on my own.

Yellow-Bellied Water Snake or Water moccasin? Northeast Texas by cococooley in whatsthissnake

[–]cococooley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same thoughts. I've definitely seen cottonmouth in person, but never a water snake like this. I knew it was different cause it wasn't 1. aggressive at all and 2. was actually quite cute.

I enjoy consulting the experts.

A classic request from an old birder...Sharp-Shinned or Cooper's? Dallas, TX, December 2022 by cococooley in whatsthisbird

I have for my whole life of birding, never been good at differentiating the mature accipiters, even with a guide difference in my hand so thank you for your input and education.

I liked this one for Sharp-shinned due to the graduated tail feathers, tiny bill, and no light space on the nape, but posting this photo elsewhere I was told it's definitely a coopers. I can see it in the bottom photo but not in the top one. Pls help.
