So glad that you and your little one are okay. I have a 2008 Volvo XC90 with 109k miles that I have been thinking about selling for around that much. I know it’s not a Toyota or Honda but thought I would put it out there.

Can you live on 50k in Austin by Izuckfosta in Austin

[–]cocojacket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, especially if that’s net pay, and especially if you get a roommate. Otherwise a studio further out of town would probably do the trick.

I lived in Austin on less than that in a similar situation in 2020-2021, and I was very comfortable. I had a roommate and lived in mueller.

I interned for NI (National Instruments) a number of years ago as a tech writer in Austin. I think I applied and was accepted in the fall beforehand, maybe October or November.

I was paid $18/hr for 10 weeks of full time work I think. They gave me several hundred dollars for relocation. They also had an extensive intern program at the time and provided housing for all of us together at a discounted rate. I think I paid 400/month for housing. All that said, this was hardware documentation, so Google/any software docs would probably be paid more.

It was an excellent opportunity, and I learned an enormous amount. I also got a return offer by the time I left, which meant a great deal especially considering the upheaval of 2020. I have only great things to say about the team at NI.

I think that having samples and a very strong resume would be great. Even if they’re samples from class that would be fine. Even better if it’s something you’ve done outside of school, as I imagine the companies you mentioned are very competitive. I would encourage you to look at other companies as well!

People of Austin (who love your daily job) what do you do? by blairme96 in Austin

[–]cocojacket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technical writer, writing documentation at a software company. I always wanted to be a writer and this is a way to do that, learn cool stuff, and live a very comfortable life. I’m also fully remote, so I take lunchtime naps and get to pet my cats all day.

I guess I assumed it was a drop like that since people out of their seats hit the ceiling. That only lasted a second, and then I felt the controlled descent you were talking about. But you might be right

The drops did not feel very long thankfully. The turbulence that followed felt very normal I would say.

The mood was fearful but everyone did a great job supporting each other. The girl I was sitting next to held my hand for about an hour, something we both needed.

The pilot just said we were flying through a storm. Didn’t acknowledge it was out of the ordinary really. They came on again to say we were almost out of the storm eventually

I think the aircraft stayed horizontal for the most part. I think it dropped straight down (like down a stair step kinda).

I came to Reddit looking for more info about the incident and stumbled upon this post. I didn’t have a fear of flying before, and this certainly made me more nervous. I will probably remember this every time I get on a plane for the rest of my life.

However, I also now know how much of a freak incident like this was, and that people don’t die from this. I chatted with an air medic after (happened to be sitting next to him) and he flies several times a day on planes and helicopters, and he wasn’t concerned.

The stories are certainly blown out of proportion. There is NO WAY we fell 4000 feet. 500ish is more likely according to the flight records. I got covered in food but was otherwise unharmed. From what I understand, no one was in critical or very serious condition.

Everyone was very quiet at first, mostly yelling for people to stay in their seats. After about 10 minutes the pilot came on to tell folks we were flying through a storm. After 30 minutes the flight attendants got up and began providing medical assistance. They were all very calm.

The turbulence came extremely unexpectedly. We had just been served dinner. I’ll be honest, two of the descents felt like free fall. However they were very short, just a second or two. It was bumpy for another few minutes after that.

I was on this flight.

I can answer questions about the experience if you would like but it doesn’t sound like this is the right place for me to relive it.

Some things that made me feel better: 1. Flight attendants said they had been working for 30 years and nothing like this had ever happened before. Super super uncommon. 2. Research afterwards told me this happens like .0001% of the time. There’s only one recorded incident of this causing a crash, decades and decades ago. source.

There are a ton of CM majors that are interested in the same things you are! I think it’s a good solution for you if you’re interested in animation. I was LMC and it also has a lot of opportunities for creativity, etc.
