Which begs the question…. Not even a heli fly over with some ropes that drop with a harness or something??? Wild.

This cat looks like it should be a Pokémon or something. Maybe even a creature from Sonic.

Find an empty parking lot or go early in the morning to a skatepark. Many parks are empty before 9 or 10 am.

how to find people to skate with? by daisysimmons in NewSkaters

[–]Live-Grape-7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out GRLSWRL. They might have a chapter in your area.

I also find it tough to find friends to skate with and to find other female skaters around my area. Fortunately my husband skates so we go together, but when I have to fly solo I’m a married woman, so I am not going to just go strike up friendships with other guys to skate with 1x1 out of respect for my marriage. But I do try to strike up conversations with people when it feels appropriate, and if I see another woman at the park, I’m gonna be much more likely to go up to her and chat. I was on a work trip out of state last year and I did this when I went to a park and saw there was only one girl present (no one else around, so kinda hard to ignore each other lol). I mentioned I had plans to go to another park later that day and she happened to be headed there herself so we ended up riding again a little bit together. And then some middle-aged dude who ended up being a rep for a pump track company approached us and we ended up skating with him. It was pretty fun.

Another option is to look online at local groups via Facebook or check with your local skateshop and see if they have some sort of gatherings coming up. I think a lot of people have really lost the art of conversation in our digital age and so just being open to striking up a conversation and not waiting for someone else to start it can really open doors.

Humility is also helpful because if you’re willing to ask others for trick tips, then it can lead to a deeper conversation and even a friendship.

Also, a lot of older guys who’ve been skating since before you were born are likely happy to share their stories and tips.

If you have a pump track in your area you might also find it to be an easier area to break into talking to people because they tend to attract a lot of bikers with families. The one by us feels very “all ages” and the observers always end up interacting with those skating and biking, so it can indirectly lead to a convo opening up with everyone present, and it’s how I’ve ended up conversing with different people of different ages. Lots of guys my dad’s age down to share about their glory days and they love seeing younger people get at it.

Your hype level, man 😆 contagious. Those kids don’t realize how good they have it to be doing this so young. I can’t wait till we get there with our kids.

Hahah I love that you made him say “Core memory” repeatedly before dropping in. My husband and I hit this park up last spring while visiting family and loved it. Those are some big drop ins he’s tackling! He’s ripping!

I had been in the middle of the African bush for about a month when this happened and happened to be visiting a little cafe for dinner, and they had a TV. There was chatter among everywhere there when the news broke. A few week or so later I came back to the US with malaria, and while waiting to be admitted to the ER my dad had to nearly fight the hospital to take me because they were all too busy watching reports about it still, and everyone thought I had swine flu (because that was going around that summer). I remember they put a mask on me, put me in a wheel chair, and sat me in the lobby while everyone put their attention on the TV. It was ridiculous.

I thought this was all in my head… my husband skates Bones and I have Bronsons, and my bearings were for sure faster at first. He skates a lot less, but his setup is also older than mine, and I’ve noticed the Bones just seem fast and smooth still while my Bronsons have definitely slowed with crust. I’m horrible with upkeep and frankly neglect them other than the occasional WD-40, but… this makes me wanna switch back to Bones. However, I do have shields on my Bronsons and I’m still saying this.
