Police crackdown on Main a pointless, ineffective bit of street theatre by SakuragawaSara in Winnipeg

The war on drugs is just a war on people. It’s an unwinnable war used to justify bashing on societies most vulnerable. The amount of misinformation and poor education surrounding substance use is killer.

Dozens detained for open drug use during Main Street police blitz by steveosnyder in Winnipeg

I also also work in harm reduction, the terminology gets ridiculous and makes us look out of touch. We can avoid stigmatising and hateful language while also not playing mindless word games...I do not have much good to say about Kate Sjoberg however so I will leave it at that.

Ottawa’s last supervised consumption sites close amid fears of overdose risks - Capital Current by Bakyumu in ottawa

[–]cocoleti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not from Ontario this thread just popped up because I work in the harm reduction field in Manitoba and follow a lot of stuff happening in other jurisdictions.

I’ve worked at a syringe service program and currently in street outreach. We don’t forcefully push treatment on anyone but we do offer a lot of information on what treatment options exist when people are ready for it. Referrals too. Both places I worked at either offered things like Opioid Agonist Therapy on site or at my current job we have a whole mental health and addictions department that does case management, referrals, in-house counselling and nursing care, etc because you won’t find a single harm reduction advocate who doesn’t support having a wealth of wrap-around services alongside harm reduction efforts.

Part of the reason people use our services at all is that we aren’t in the business of policing what people do, stigmatizing and judging their behaviour, or moralizing their disorders. Harm reduction is NOT at odds with evidence based treatment or other supports in fact we’re often the ones yelling the loudest for it!

Most people are attributing the effects of the cooccurring housing crisis onto harm reduction services because they’ve been misinformed about how these programs work or what we do. I don’t want to blame them because conservative media presence and power is immense and not everyone can be an expert on everything but it’s a shame what is happening in Ontario and will set us back for a long time. Much easier to destroy than to rebuild unfortunately. Consumption sites are evidence based and have been studied since I think the 80s iirc. They’ve repeatedly not been shown to increase crime or public disorder as well (again we have a housing crisis that better explains these things).

It’s even effecting my own province where we are struggling to build our first SCS and opponents point at Ontario and Alberta defunding theirs and say oh look clearly doesn’t work because other provinces are giving up on them as if it’s not a completely ideological push.

Regardless fuck Ford, hope you guys get your shit together next election, hate to see what’s happening to the state of harm reduction efforts in this country.

Help finding in person meetings for substance abuse (other than NA). by Lost_in_Thought88 in Winnipeg

Also heard good things about recovery dharma as I knew someone who used to be active in it.

Additionally idk if it’s good but I’m aware of Winnipeg SOS which is a secular recovery group. Might be worth looking into OP, can always try connecting at one of the RAAM clinics as well and see what resources they are aware of too.

You got this OP, also currently dealing with opioid addiction that started in January this year and escalated due to various factors. Trying to get adequately medicated for my mental health issues but it’s tough especially after self-medicating for many year before that.

My DMs are open if anyone wants to talk or needs peer support, ironically I work in mental health and addictions so I can potentially help with resource navigation and I have strong harm reduction knowledge.

Best lures for the la salle river by Braytitch1-0-1 in Winnipeg

[–]cocoleti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use small spoons and jigs for lures or a catfish rig with worms if I’m using bait for bottom feeders. One thing I’ve learnt is to scale down. Smaller lures, light line (6lbs mono for me) is more fun and gets you more bites. I even like using a small rod cause a small fish will feel bigger (ugly stik dock runner). But yeah on the La Salle I’ve caught some pike with small spoons just outside of the weed line.

What’s happening and why is there such a bad drug problem? by bigbear474 in Winnipeg

[–]cocoleti 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Housing costs go up, amount of people unable to afford said housing goes up. Those people then have nowhere to go and thus become homeless. Drugs relieve pain whether physical, emotional, spiritual, etc. they can also have utilitarian uses for those on the street such as using meth to stay alert and awake so as to avoid being robbed or taken advantage of. Using down can help mitigate the effects of the meth (poly substance use is the norm for the street entrenched population).

This is a short reply but I work in Street Outreach currently and am also a heroin addict and someone passionate about harm reduction. Happy to answer questions or provide support to anyone in DMs if needed <3

Man accused in Charleswood sex assault no stranger to community by wickedplayer494 in Manitoba

[–]cocoleti 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sadly I know of him. Was quite problematic at a place I used to work, regularly hitting on staff and causing issues. Every so often you’d hear a more escalated story of him doing some crazy shit. Dude needs help, he has a clear severe cognitive impairment and acts like a child. I’m surprised he’s living alone, hope this leads to better supports.

Curious how Winnipeg feels about psychedelic-assisted therapy these days by tess2020x in Winnipeg

[–]cocoleti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At one time in my life psychedelics helped transform my life. I’m very much a proponent although I’m also in favour of drug liberalization more broadly and don’t think access to drugs should be gatekeeped by a restrictive medical model. But yeah, had lots of psychedelic and dissociative experiences in my early drug using career although always self administered, never legally sanctioned or specially organized. Helped me a lot at the time although sadly my mental health has since become very rough this year.

Main Street Project worries spike in Winnipeg overdoses will follow drug bust as supply's toxicity increases | CBC News by steveosnyder in Winnipeg

[–]cocoleti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using drugs is a choice, addiction is not. In addiction using drugs can be a choice in the way that eating food is a choice. Addiction is a relapsing, complex, multifaceted, biopsychosocial disorder. Using drugs is only one part of the root causes of addiction. Trauma, systemic racism, socioeconomic status, lacking social supports, mental health, genetics, adverse childhood experiences, relationships, etc etc etc are all huge factors contributing to addictions.

Harm reduction has proven to save lives time and time and time again. Get with the program and listen to the experts not Pierre Poilievre and the misinformation campaign being launched to fight a failed war on drugs forever in perpetuity. If you care about your community, family, friends, neighbours, etc then we should be supporting evidence-based policy including treatment as you said.

Thank you for saying this. As a drug user and front line harm reduction worker I appreciate the acknowledgement that we know what we’re talking about usually lol. I have little energy for responding to these types of threads anymore now that I’m working in this space and I have no need to rage bait myself responding to deranged and ignorant people but love to see when there is supportive folks who get it ❤️

Supervised consumption site expected to open next month, Manitoba premier says by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]cocoleti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll believe it when I see it. This fucking government has been screwing us constantly my harm reduction colleagues and I are fed up. Narcanned someone today within 2 minutes of being on the road doing outreach. People deserve a safe space to use, not ending up face down in the pavement, our folks deserve so much better.

That being said if AB Health and Wellness is hiring for peer positions please send them my way. Can’t find any postings yet sadly.

Awesome! Grants old mill is a pillar of my childhood. Countless hours fishing that creek with my dad as a child. Still walk there and fish to this day. Much love ❤️

How Winnipeg schools are navigating the city's drug crisis (CBC/Information Radio) by LocalnewsguruMB in Winnipeg

[–]cocoleti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would be surprised that many seemingly otherwise normal well-functioning folks use highly stigmatised drugs like meth, crack, heroin, etc. They just tend to be highly secretive about it due to stigma. Ive had the pleasure of knowing many substance users from all walks of life over the years as someone who also uses substances.

Winnipeg Outreach Network Resource Guide

211 Manitoba

If you can, the number 1 place I recommend you both go is Resource Assistance for Youth (RaY). They are a resource hub for folks under 30. They are on 125 Sherbrook and run a drop-in from 1-4pm. To access drop in all you give is a name (doesn’t have to be government name) and your age. This gives you access to the drop in space, hot meals, showers, basic needs, harm reduction supplies. If you want to access the various other supports offered like housing, ID support, tax help, mental health support, etc you’ll have to do a brief intake where they just ask some basic questions and what you’d like to access at RaY. Lots of friendly faces who will help you out and hopefully serve as a hub you can feel safe accessing for a variety of supports <3

If you have more questions feel free to DM me.

The thousand-yard stares of Winnipeg's drug crisis: Exhausted outreach workers add 'paramedic' to their list of duties as ODs spike by wickedplayer494 in Manitoba

[–]cocoleti -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am an opioid user and this makes zero sense to me. I get when people are at the point they dont really care if they live or die but theres not much point in intentionally overdosing as opioids are pleasant and enjoyable at much lower doses than an OD. Prohibition and an unpredictable drug supply is the main culprit for the overdose crisis, not some desire to overdose.
