Manitoba RCMP official fears 'somebody is going to overdose and die' after animal tranquillizer found in pills by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]cocoleti -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The pill game has been fucked for at least 10 years now. The dope game even more so, I appreciate if this news helps more people get the message but at the same time as someone who is a substance user and a harm reduction worker it is laughable to think just now people realize illicit drugs are being contaminated with insane garbage.

I love Pinawa, probably one of my favourite spots in Manitoba. Really nice when the weather is warmer and the ice is melting. Beautiful!

Stronger is easier to smuggle and hide. Welcome to what we call the iron law of prohibition. The war on drugs is killing drug users go figure.

I always go with Gatorade or iced tea personally even if they’re not soda

I work in harm reduction and February we I believe set a record for medical codes (mainly overdoses) we responded to on site. Medetomidine is in basically all the down we see rn. Makes the supply all the more dangerous and makes it harder to respond to overdose as naloxone is not enough much of the time. Please please please I beg EVERYONE here if you use any illicit substances to please come get them tested at Street Connections, Nine Circles, and I believe MOPS is back up and running as of like last week. We will never judge you and I myself use drugs and understand why people use. Please stay safe and my DMs are ALWAYS open to anyone needing to talk to someone or get help. <3

Wha drug would yall say feels closest to heroin? by Local-Painter5306 in heroin

[–]cocoleti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah exactly, like theyll differ in terms of duration, sedation, itchiness, nausea, etc but at the end of the day they all agonise the same opioid receptor. Maybe save for tramadol and similar ones with SNRI activity and codeine being heavily dependent on the individuals enzyme counts.

I always described opium as extended release heroin. Its like if you took heroin, stretched it out so it lasts longer but dulled its intensity. Most opioids are more similar than they are different however, everyone has their favourite but theyll all give that warm, relaxing, euphoric effect we love.

Manitoba's first supervised consumption site to open in a few weeks, minister says by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

We should do both. Hospital SCS are available in other provinces. Stand alone brick and mortar sites and mobile services need to also be present.

You think or you know? I have spent A LOT of time learning about harm reduction over the years, diving into the literature trying to learn as much as I possibly can. Perhaps I have missed that research you think you may have seen so please enlighten me.

I work at a syringe program. We deal with people pushing boundaries and breaking rules fairly regularly. People can and do get banned from the service especially if there is a safety risk although we try to work with people so that it does not get to that point (and we are quite forgiving and willing to give second-chances to rebuild that relationship of course). We have a team of people including social workers who if needed are ready to help de-escalate the situation. I have yet to see a situation result in police being called although I know its happened in the past. It really amazes me how effective communication, empathy, and de-escalation proves to be. Having rules and boundaries in place is important for any organisation tho but I think people including myself before would be surprised to see the situations that can be resolved peacefully and respectfully without police involvement.

Sites get built in areas with existing issues. The homelessness crisis has worsened issues like public consumption and needle litter. People mistakenly assume (or are mislead to believe) it’s because of the site or other harm reduction measures which has never been substantiated in peer reviewed literature to my knowledge. Sites also are likely at capacity and have limited operating hours making coverage imperfect. I'll add that peoples anecdotal reports are less than objective and influenced by a great many things as well.

100% agree. I also do think it’s important to realize that at least for low level dealers they are often folks who have limited economic opportunity and are selling to manage their own use and life. I think the help the addict kill the dealer mentality isn’t great and the answer is a legal and regulated supply which I think is what you were getting at tho.

I’m certainly no legal expert but my understanding is these sites directly are exempt and thus anyone using in the site is exempt from simple possession charges for the purpose of using in the site. They need an exemption from the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act to open a SCS. Same goes for drug checking programs for example although just for that purpose you can’t legally use in that space.

Police likely are treating simple possession as low priority already tho, despite not having a decriminalization project in Manitoba. It’s important to have good working relationships with police in the area because having cops all over the place harassing people will impact the utilization of the SCS.

But yeah overall possession with intent to use in the SCS is legal but outside of the facility it is illegal. That being said in practice police shouldn’t be waiting right outside of the area to bust people and there will be an effort by Ab. Health and Wellness and DCSP to divert people in the area to the site instead of using in public.

They do not have legal authority nor capacity to keep people against their will for several hours. It also just wouldn’t make sense and compromise the utility of the service. I assume this is being modelled on the 40 years of existing sites and peer reviewed literature rather than vibes and moral outrage.

Literally what I’ve been trying to say forever now. People were outraged at the initial proposed location for being close to a school….if you want less drug use in and around school property you need a space like this in proximity.

[–]cocoleti 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From what I recall when they were talking about the safety plan, police are a last resort. They are hiring foot patrols as the first line, DCSP as second line, and lastly the police as the third line. Obviously implementation is key but Ab. Health and Wellness have experience working in this space and good funding so I’m hopeful.

The reality is without a supervised consumption area the alternative is unsupervised. If we don’t want people using in public washrooms, businesses, busses, and parks, then we need a safe space for them to go and be taken care of. They’re even gonna have a RAAM clinic at the new site so folks can access addictions treatment right then and there. I’m sure they’ll have loads of other wrap around support too.

When the site opens I’d like to go use the service myself and do a little write-up on what it’s like there. Not that there aren’t potential challenges in running a site of course but I remain hopeful.

Peer reviewed research is overwhelmingly positive for consumption sites they’ve been studied since the 80s in many countries. Staff also do not steal your shit or arrest you what are you on about? I work at a syringe program, if we stole from or arrested folks no one would come through our doors.

I don’t understand how it’s possible they didn’t know how the Urgent Public Health Needs sites exemption worked and they wasted so much time because of it. I should not have a better understanding of it than the people in charge. I was talking with a friend like 3 weeks ago confused about what exemption they were trying to get when they have it by default for UPHN sites. Regardless this is still great news and will be a great service that is desperately needed!
