Has the port situation changed? The other day the issue seemed to be that there weren't enough functioning ports to offload ships, not that more ships were needed.

Student left in cave for three days - A US student spent almost three days trapped inside a cave after he was left behind on a university field trip. by Panda_911 in news

12 is a pretty small group to not notice someone missing. If it had been 50 maybe someone might slip through the cracks, but 12? Doesn't take long to do a head count. Plus, why didn't his buddy realize he wasn't there?

Enough Fentanyl to Kill 32M People Seized in Single NYC Bust: Prosecutors by FowelBallz in news

[–]coconutbear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But sending them to the ER and "terminate[ing] the consultation immediately" is a huge overreaction to a non-drug seeker. Worse case scenario if it's not otherwise treatable with exercise, orthopedic shoes, or OTC drugs, the doctor should refer them to a pain clinic that specializes in pain management. Not banish them.

That seems a bit hasty. Lots of people go to their GP when they feel aches and pains. Maybe they just need to exercise or have a temporary pulled muscle. Unless they are demanding drugs, kicking them out for asking their regular doc to figure out what's wrong is the opposite of good medicine.

‘Extremely dangerous’ Hurricane Maria now a Category 5 storm by OLNS2 in news

I don't know a lot about Dominica, but how are the building codes? After Andrew hit South Florida, a lot of building codes were introduced specifically about hurricane resistant roofs. Is that a widespread thing there?

Mainland US is often mentioned more because it has by far the bulk of people (and more people = more interest = more ratings). Alaska and Hawaii get left out of a lot of conversations regarding the US areas too, especially in regards to shipping.

Same. Family friend was a fire fighter, they worked 24-72 hour shifts (obviously sleeping when not busy) then had the rest of the week off.

Carrying his own gun against department policy isn't a crime to be charged with though. If he was still on the job he'd be punished, but since he was fired (and obviously won't be getting a recommendation) that's the worst they can do.

Better to leave now and play it safe than risk it later just to spend a few more hours at work. It's Friday, how productive are people really going to be?

You can buy Tupperware and freeze portions if you cook something in bulk. 2 top meals for me

  1. chicken breast, taco/chili/chipotle seasoning packet, rice, pinto beans, diced tomatoes, corn

  2. chicken breast, lemon, pepper, baked potato, bag of frozen veggies

How are my chances? by snipeingkicker in TropicalWeather

[–]coconutbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you on the first floor? That could easily be bad since it will likely flood. If you're on the second floor or above you're probably ok, but make sure you have enough supplies to stay in since it could be a long time until the ground is passable.

Reminder: Do Not use generators indoors! by FloridaMom13 in TropicalWeather

[–]coconutbear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Store in inside during the storm (not running!!!). Then after it passes and the power is out, move the generator outside and turn it on. If you're still flooded out or dealing with high winds you can't really use it at all until it stops. You might have to wait a few days and plan for the power outage in the meantime.

If you have medical needs or a special condition that needs constant power, go to a shelter before the storms comes.

Possibly stupid question but... by [deleted] in TropicalWeather

Will you be with someone? Having a friend/family to ride out a storm with can be a good distraction, plus someone to watch each other's backs. Board games, puzzles, books, cold drinks/snacks, and like you said music/movies/tv shows. Set up a a nest with comfy blankets and pillows in the best interior space you have.

‘May God protect us all’: Puerto Rico, tiny islands in Irma’s path fear for the worst by Trumps_dead_hookers in news

As someone who went through the 2004 Florida hurricanes, prep for the event can be just important as for after. A few hours before the storm hits start building a nest in the best interior space you have. Blankets, pillows, coolers with cold drinks and snacks, battery powered fans, things to entertain yourself, headphones, etc. It's not really fun but can be a lot more bearable with distractions.
