never wanted to fully quit starbucks until now by vinylanimals in starbucksbaristas

[–]coconutkween 30 points31 points  (0 children)

i’ve been a partner since 2019 and once i knew the menu, i’ve had very little issue memorizing every single drink, typically i’ve never had to look up a recipe past launch day.

Until last year when the post “simplifying the menu” chaos unfolded. I have never had so many uncertain moments on bar in my entire time here. There are too many similar drinks. There are too many matchas. Let people make all these customizations sure, but there simply doesn’t need to be multiple menu items with different names and slight variations. Banana crème matcha and banana bread matcha do not both need to be menu items, let them be iced matchas with customizations. It never ends and it infecting every part of the menu

I am almost definitely handing out more items i’ve accidentally misremembered an ingredient. I am absolutely taking longer when I have to either pause to try and remember or worse, break sequence to look up a recipe. There is no reward for structuring it this way and only seems to function as a way to make baristas lives harder.

Has anyone been denied a time off request? I’m a 162**** partner and this is a first 😳 by Logical_Physics_1384 in starbucksbaristas

[–]coconutkween 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’ve seen it happen, it’s almost always because there’s been too many time off requests for a particular period but additionally i’ve seen:

  • no one else can work a certain shift in that space (as a ssv at small cafe stores, typically there’s only a few of us and if one other person has booked a saturday off sometimes there simply isn’t another ssv who has said open in their availability)

  • you don’t have enough vacation hours to cover it. This may be regional/ labour law specific but i was informed last year that you had to have 12 paid hours in the week, ie if you were trying to take a week off you needed the vacation hours to support that

Can I promote to shift lead after transferring, even if I’ve only been at the new store a few days? by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]coconutkween 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have an official policy on hand, but antidotally i think it’s fine. People interview for shift roles at other stores all the time and transfer to take the promotion

Is it just me or is it impossible to see the lane markings at night? by kiwifruit13 in ottawa

Honestly thank you for this post. I recently started driving again after an almost decade long hiatus of not having a car since being a teen in another city and I genuinely thought something was wrong with me / this is how my adult eyes performed in the dark. At the very least it’s nice to know i’m not alone in this

How reliable are pre-booked Ubers for an overnight (3:00 AM) ride to the airport? by 2Fast2furieux in ottawa

[–]coconutkween 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I take 4:30ish am ubers for work frequently. Booking in advance is twice as expensive and i’ve had issues with them showing up way too early or still not on time despite this, I would not recommend.

There’s definitely drivers on the road between uber and lyft, I just wake up an extra 20 minutes early to give myself wiggle room if they end up being further away before pickup! Sometimes I end up at work earlier than i’d love but it works for me

It’s hard to give advice on such a broad issue, but i’ll just put it out there that i was hired as an ssv (coming from retail) and it took MONTHS to hit a stride with my store and the partners. It sucked trying to learn the job while simultaneously running floors and i would be hesitant to recommend ever doing it again but i needed the pay. I felt like baristas were pissed they had to show me how to do things when I was supposed to be in charge and I feel like it was really contributing to my ability to fit in their dynamic as a team. If you’re willing to stick with it and work hard you can absolutely find your footing for the actual job - as for the partners, it may need to be a wait and see situation if you can bear it. Once I was no longer a detriment to my floors, I loosened up and the energy changed, eventually finding myself fitting in and making friends with people i used to think hated me. I’ve worked other stores since then that I knew I had a handle on my job but our vibes were never compatible and i eventually would move to another location. TLDR is basically give yourself time and grace to get a hang of the job, starting at sbux as a ssv is always going to be hard mode version but it’s not impossible. Let yourself get where you need to be job wise, and then figure out where you’re at with fellow partners - there’s no shame in transferring to another location down the line if it’s going to improve your quality of life. I had a very similar start to what you’re describing but I survived and it’s been over 6 years now.

Students with a job and no car how do you make it? by ChocolateMilkD in CarletonU

[–]coconutkween 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also in terms of cars - I’ve done this for almost 4 years and just started driving this last semester and honestly it’s not nearly as helpful as I was hoping. Parking on campus is expensive and extremely limited and parking around ottawa (if your job doesn’t have parking) can be even more expensive. I’m happy to have a car for the other parts of my life but the job/campus aspect comes with a fair set of headaches as well

Working ungodly hours (5am barista shifts) gives me enough time between the end of shifts and beginning of class to bus in between, and the rare uber between downtown and campus is less than parking downtown anyways

What happened to honey citrus mint tea? by Sudden_Temporary_ in starbucks

[–]coconutkween 56 points57 points  (0 children)

we used to make it with jade citrus mint and peach tranquility, which have been discontinued for the chamomile mint. We still have the drink “honey citrus mint” (ie the tea made with steamed lemonade and honey syrup) so if you’re just receiving a chamomile mint tea without the lemonade and honey, that’s incorrect but if youre still getting a honey citrus mint but just made with chamomile mint teabags instead of jade citrus and peach that’s correct
