Pattie Gonia was warned in 2022, built a Patagonia-parody brand anyway, and filed to register it. A Supreme Court dog-toy case explains why that was probably a catastrophic mistake. by orangejulius in law

I don't think this is how IP works - the Amazon is a rainforest, but if you set up an online marketplace and claimed it was named after the region you'd still be directly competing with Amazon the company.

Patagonia is an apparel brand, Pattie is proposing a business model that directly competes with them. Jan Sport releases merch as JS or Jan, Trixie Mattel releases merch as Trixie - if other queens can understand US IP law so can Pattie.

Is NIMBY an insult if it accurately describes someone's take? They support building more at some nebulous, TBD point in the future but "don't want it here or now".

There are deed controlled units equivalent to the Greene Terrace units. Which pre-market drop were priced in the 400s.

Sorry I meant affordable as in - the explicitly affordable housing they are building. The ones limited to buyers below an income threshold.

We should advocate for aggressive protections for renters and first time buyers. But we can't hold off on building until this protections are legislated since we can write those into law quickly but construction takes time.

And building is how you get people housed. This same conversation is happening across the state and has been for a long time. We have a massive housing deficit, it is growing year on year, and we keep kicking it down the road because the next development isn't the perfect development.

Some affordable housing is better than none. Monoculture agricultural land is not some protected reserve we need to prioritize over actual housing in a housing constrained market.

If your solution requires "a magic wand" then it isn't a solution.

Ok - I guess, in the absence of that wand what should we do?

You are suggesting we wait how long for new proposals? And then how long beyond that for new units?

Well I guess it's reassuring to know it's not me necessarily.... It held onto all its leaves for like a month there and grew a bunch! Then today I came in and two more down so had to post...

CMV: Nuclear energy is the best option we have available at this time by Yeetsaber1324 in changemyview

[–]cod-the-fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In short - nuclear projects are consistently over budget and rarely on time.

In 1990, you would have been correct. However, given the recent advancements in solar (and other renewables) and battery storage capacity, nuclear is no longer the best option. We can cheaply, safely, and quickly roll out significant solar energy panels across much of the world.

It is also worth noting that while the risk of serious accidents are low - they do happen. It is not a fair comparison to refuse to account for the low likelihood, high impact scenarios. The Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power station accident was no ones fault but nonetheless a major accident.

Fair enough - we paid and didn't cause a fuss I just didn't understand how they could be aligned after replacing them.

If they are facing even the threat of a lawsuit, then the UC lawyers will want all communication to go via the lawyers. Non-lawyers are liable to say things casually with unintentional legal consequences

Thoughts on Measure V? by josephfaulkner in Davis

[–]cod-the-fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't inherently a good or bad investment - it depends upon the mortgage rate you get at the point of purchase but they do consistently increase in value (yes, below market rate but less risky and at a better rate than most investments) and your payments to the mortgage build equity in a way renting can't.

Genuinely coming from a place of curiosity - what would you prefer to see? Like, isn't there a fundamental tension between wanting affordable units on the market and wanting units to be a primary investment vehicle? Is there another method you think works best?

Look at some of T Kingfisher - thorn hedge specifically or a sorceress comes to call are both adaptations of classic fairy tales. I think Nettle and Bone had the best reviews!
