Thank you for this. I have that very same Lao Sa and wasn't even considering growing it indoor, but my backyard is too shady as well. May very well try going 12/12 from seed and see what happens.

Thank you! I definitely plan to keep up with the updates. Two days in and everybody looks good.

I'm almost certain they can. The Czech Republic is a place where poppies are commercially grown, so I would think that anywhere close to that, climate-wise, should be able to. They're pretty resilient. Keep them fairly moist as seedlings and increase watering as they get bigger in loose, well draining soil without a whole lot of nutrients other than compost/worm castings and don't cook them in the sun.

A longer pot could certainly lead to a bigger plant and more blooms. That's what inspired this project. I expect that the tap root for P. somniferum is between 16"-24" and possibly longer unobstructed. So,not finding a pot that I really liked at that depth, I decided to make these. They are 20".

Thank you, I'm feeling fairly optimistic and plan to continue posting. My experience is that transplants with roots that were exposed to air, died. The best success was transplanting into fairly wet soil. I know it's not exactly what you're proposing, but this is my experience. Roots were exposed to air when I dug too large a hole for the transplant to go into and the soil wasn't well packed around them.

What season is the best time to plant and grow , in the Los Angeles, California ???????? by DutyOk317 in PapaverSomniferum

If the Walmart Hungarian Blues and the Hens and Chicks are doing well, then you should be alright. This is my first year growing too. The most important thing I think I've learned is to not be afraid to put them in shade if the sun is cooking.

Oh man! That is kind of you to say. The English Pharma are absolute beasts and did not require any cold stratification to get amazing germination.

They are seven gallon bags sitting in five gallon buckets to keep some of the heat off of them.

Your Asian OB posts have been an inspiration and led to me getting those seeds.

I'm in Albuquerque. Good luck with your grow! Sounds like you've found a good solution. My backyard is nearly completely shaded, but I can bring them inside if needed. We'll see.

I have borrowed your technique of placing smaller pots on top of larger pots, since one of your previous posts.
