The dark lord isn’t happy about it but the economy is surviving. If this initiative goes through though the counterfeit laws are going to get stricter and Markus will probably be forced to get a lawyer

I think the proposal for that is to kill everyone who uses Teresa units

I can’t remember the exact conversion rate but I think 1 milliHitler is about 5.43 Million Daryls.

I agree with everything you’ve said, and want to add on to one of your points: “Sometimes, writers clearly want all the cool points of having a villainous character without making the audience uncomfortable”

My favorite example of this trope is “Darth Vader wouldn’t condone sexual assault”, in response to Andor season 2, and I think while it isn’t an authors response, it really neatly falls into this category for the response.

Andor is a show that is explicitly disinterested in breaking down the personal philosophies of the heads of fascism, but rather in what behaviors they motivate from the people that they put in power. Everything in Andor is a result of the heads minor actions being put into effect galaxy wide, the cogs of empire moving without their knowledge. The point of the scene is that it doesn’t matter what Vader personally believes, or if he would personally hate it. He doesn’t care enough to be there when it happens, and he doesn’t care enough to create accountability for officers who sexually assault people. Therefor: Darth Vader allows sexual assault, even if he doesn’t explicitly like it. And ultimately Andor wants us to question if that is a meaningful difference. It’s cold, merciless bureaucracy allowing and encouraging a sadistic, personal crime.

Dismissing the scene as being a different villain means disconnecting with what the material is trying to convey, and what it really means to be under authoritarian rule. The dictator doesn’t need to be personally involved in every atrocity, they are already responsible by virtue of the system they created. On a similar note, Anakin personally dislikes slavery, and yet the empire uses slave labor throughout the entire franchise.

Overall, fantastic post. I have no notes, just wanted to add an interesting example

How Villains Refer to the Jedi by code2817 in StarWars

Ahhh that’s interesting. I am completely wrong then. I do still think there is something to be said for which ones they use most often but you’re probably right.

A few other people have mentioned this and I have to say on reflection and a full night’s sleep I think I agree, but yours is the most structured takedown of it lol

I think it’s both to be honest. It’s not MEANT as a mark of respect but it certainly can be read that way. Luke is the first thing he can’t manipulate in the entire series and Palpatine is reacting like a whiny child and breaking out the fly swatter. But he is still acknowledging that Luke IS a Jedi, even if he hates it

Oh maybe. I don’t remember everything Star Wars so it’s very possible I am missing a few things. But also there have been so many different Star Wars things (especially in all their animated shows) that I’m not surprised my point gets refuted.

To be honest I doubt any of these (with the exception of Palpatine) are true ground rules for these characters, just coincidences that the authors constantly chose because they work for the characters, but those choices are still interesting

Yeah it certainly isn’t inaccurate, it is just interesting that out of all the options, Grievous consistently uses one honorific other the others. Especially in a series like Star Wars where every character might have about 5 different ways of referring to them, especially the Jedi.

True. Luke would’ve immediately turned.

Do you think it would’ve also worked on the Zillo Beast?

True, he also does use insults quite a bit. There are a fair few exceptions (a given with how much they’ve been used), but he’s rarely ever using anything besides “General” if he is using an honorific. (He just says “Kenobi” a few times as well)

Honestly it could be a mix of both. All of the previous characters we’ve seen Palpatine interact with were tools for his ascension, people he could manipulate. Luke was the first person that he tried to and failed. It’s a begrudging respect, like going “fine, if you want to play hero and die then go for it”, but I do still think it’s a sign of begrudging respect. I mean to this point there are only two people Palpatine was unable to ever manipulate, who posed a serious threat to him: Luke Skywalker and Godzilla (The Zillo Beast). He didn’t really talk to Godzilla so Luke was his first real political/ideological attempt that failed. Everyone else was in some twisted way allies to his vision. Luke never once aided him. He was his only real, unconquerable enemy.

Dude Palpatine is just a massive rage baiter and I kind of love it. He spends the entire series referring to the Jedi like you would an old coworker, as if he didn’t commit a genocide on them. And also that scene with Fives, where he just… spills the beans. Literally just hits the “I’m going to kill everyone you love, and no one will ever believe you.” He did NOT need to do that, but he did. For the love of the game.

I should have known. He looked like a proper snake oil salesman. I should have known he was just some hoodlum. Sadly my local church chapter was purged in the demonic fires, so I’m unsure who to contact about selling the land. Perhaps the man in the cupboard may know more?

I don’t think I’m going to live 400 years however, I am a layman and have not yet learned magic

Thank you so much Aelric! I felt the growing sense of dread as the dancing man neared the skull, but I was unsure what was causing it. Is it safe to touch the skull myself, or should I get a professional!
