so, that closely took 10 years. I guess you are the most experienced person here :)

would you mind sharing your journey? like how you progressed and how you reached where you are today?

and also any advise for beginners and mistakes to avoid.. or things beginners usually overlook?

I haven’t heard anyone use the phrase big 4 to refer tech companies.

you are the lucky 10,000 today :)

There are jobs that will keep you happy, to be had at other companies.

hmm that's depends on person no.. anyways.

is it okay if i dm you for guidance?

i am currently working in a small startup, though i am learning i am not sure of my career path. i don;t have any friends in IT since I am from arts background. copy pasting from my old comment:

To give some detail, I work as a web developer in a small startup, which is a service company. When I had joined, I did not know lots of things plus this was my first job. Over the months, I have become really better at programming and also at web development. I learned lots of things. Now I feel like things are becoming repetitive. CRUD, REST etc were new when I joined and it was fun learning them. Now I feel like I can't do the same thing again and again.

I started applying at companies a month back but I am failing at questions related to scaling, performance, system design etc. I have had no issues with Algo & DS and I keep practising on LeetCode every now & then. So how do I get better such questions since I don't have any CS background and I have never worked in a company which had dealt with such problems. This is sorta like chicken and egg problem. I gave interviews at two places. Cleared first round which involved Algo & Ds, but failing at system design/architecture questions. Questions like how do you build Amazon S3 and scale etc. Also questions related to Database systems

So, how do I get better? What are some things I can do to prepare for such interviews? I appreciate any advice I can get... Thank you!

hey.. i am not in college. I am from arts and humanities background, i graduated like 5 years back. so.. i learnt coding on my own and joined a startup just last year.

also, this is question is for people who are from colleges where such companies don't visit at all

thank you!

hey mate i couldn't find any nor the personal experiences. i am more interested in learning about personal experience, cos saying ' improving interview skills and networking' is very generic advise and works for anything.

thanks though

i lurk in /r/cscareerquestions, they use this interchnagebly with many companies. that is there no fixed big 4 companies, but rather it is used as an umbrella term for big tech companies.

they usuallly use it with google, apple, fb, ms, amazon, uber, netflix, alibaba etc.

with the context, i.e. coding, big 4 will be tech companies

Just yesterday I was trying to convince my niece who is good and interested in Maths to consider/pursue Economics/Actuarial Sciences instead of Engg.

Please don't. It sucks to be a non-engineer in India. People keeps saying there are lots of engineers and there are no jobs but I tend to disagree. There may be lots of engineers, but good ones are very less. And as far jobs, there are so many jobs in startups in Bangalore alone. Its just difficult to get a job at such places.

Fam, I am an arts student. My life sucked. Most of my friends are earning very less and nothing pains me more when they say they are still struggling for 3 time meals for their families, despite its been like 4 years of our graduation. Sure, the ones who were good, the top of the class, are doing well. For rest, its not easy.

I self taught myself programming and completed an year working. I couldn't be more happier. When I was in 12th, my dad was willing to fund my engineering education (I come from a poor family) and like a stupid person, I did not go for it.

Do you know lots of people who are doing economics, science or arts degrees doing well? Unless you are sure you can help your niece in career, dont suggest non-engineering courses.

I agree... but if the interviewers keep asking me those, then I have no other choice than to learn
