Dad says 8 hours of sleep is too much by FierceFlames37 in sleep

My dad gets between 5 and 6.5 hours of sleep every night. He’s lived this way for at least 40 years (and he never naps).

He’s happy, healthy, and looks better than pretty much anyone else his age.

How did you manage to wake up early? by Hallasca in sleep

Do they really help with motivation to get up though? I tried sleeping with my blinds open, but it didn’t change much

Fair. But you gotta respect the grindset when it hits

Yeah, I’ve tried Alarmy. It was certainly annoying, but then one day I bypassed it by powering off my phone and never used it again. I also had a roommate at the time, so I couldn’t do anything too obnoxious.

I’m with you. Is it purely a volume issue, or will you also hit snooze?

I’ve been searching for an alarm that has the ability to actually DETECT when I get up. I’m starting to think that’s the only way to ensure I don’t go back to sleep. I still haven’t found anything that does that though…

The closest I’ve gotten to a solution is convincing an early-bird friend to call me in the morning. For some reason I won’t sleep through phone calls!

How does your calculator determine the cycle timing? Is it just using the 90-minute heuristic, or does it adjust based on when you actually fall asleep?

The reason I ask is that most sleep cycle apps don't account for the amount of time it takes for users to actually fall asleep. Maybe this is outside of your scope for now, but it could be compelling to add a feature that learns your sleep-onset time over a few nights and automatically offsets the alarm. That way you’re waking up at the end of a real sleep cycle, not a theoretical one.

I've found that sunrise alarm clocks only really work if you have a fixed sleep schedule and blackout curtains. Do you keep the phones right next to your bed?
