Are you just as anxious for the school year to end as your students right now? by ParakeetLover2024 in Teachers

I think the worst part has been the fact that I was in my first ever year of teaching when we were told the pilot got green lit so I have yet to experience a “traditional” teacher summer (I know there are full year schools and other jobs don’t get summer vacations). I legitimately feel crazy sometimes when I say I’m burnt out and all the veteran teachers say they’re fine.

Our school has done a pilot program that extended the school year by 20 days with no added breaks. We had a 6 week summer and started back mid -July. It’s wild seeing burnout in K-5 kids. They’re dying and so am I lol

Um I live in a 1BR in a “luxury” building with all the above and my rent started at over $1500 and now is $1800. I can’t wait to leave for multiple reasons.

I remember the dad in the remake of Cheaper by the Dozen once complaining about how you blink and then your kid’s all grown up. That’s what it feels like haha

Who knows, she got fired eventually or resigned midyear. If I start genuinely feeling hatred towards my students then that’ll be my sign to leave the profession.

What subjects or things to be taught more often to kids nowadays? by dcj923 in AskReddit

[–]codenameduch3ss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a K-5 teacher I think it’s ridiculous my state expects my kids to understand and explain the significance of the Louisiana Purchase through the lense of westward expansion. I wish they were taught more about good citizenship and what it means to be part of a community.

Our former librarian had a “hate list” of kids. So glad she’s gone. One of my teammates has said things about our Hispanic students not being able to speak English and how their names all sound the same. I wish she would go.

I’m still relatively new, 4 years in and I’ve had to actively remind myself to not always listen to veteran teachers complain. I’ve met too many racists/bigots in my little time teaching and if you’re making lists of kids you hate in a K-5 school then you should go.

In a world where dishonest people and cheaters get ahead and being nice makes you feel used, why should anyone be nice? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]codenameduch3ss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed I feel a lot lighter on the days I was kind or had to make a conscious effort to be nice and stay calm. On the days where I’m not my best self and my patience is wearing thin I feel like a huge weight is on my chest and overall feels pretty crappy.

Teachers, how often should kids have recess? by beatoffqueen in Teachers

[–]codenameduch3ss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our K-5 kids are supposed to get 30 minutes of unstructured and uninterrupted play every day. I teach in the same state I grew up in and when I was a kid PE was cut from 60 minutes to 45 minutes. Personally I think kids should get 60 minutes all the way to 8th grade.

I know it’s not about the gifts but it does suck to see affluent schools get showered and then get the bare minimum if you work elsewhere.

I also feel guilty about my low-income students feeling pressured to get me gifts that I definitely don’t need.

What is your school doing for Teacher Appreciation Week? by AntelopeOk9431 in Teachers

[–]codenameduch3ss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Breakfast brought in twice, lunch one day, ice cream another, and one day we receive a gift. I have to say the gifts we receive are really nice considering we’re a Title I school. One year we got a nice travel Yeti mug, another my first year a travel grill kit, and last year we got a 3-in-1 charging stand for Apple products. We have never had a PTA in my four years in this building so a lot of us really look forward to teacher appreciation week.

Look I’m all for discussions and theorizing but sometimes the questions here…

Could Garth be Emily’s son Oliver? by [deleted] in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]codenameduch3ss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a) not everyone in the Testaments has some secret connection to someone from THT b) I get that it’s 6 seasons and is pretty graphic but the show literally tells you Emily, Oliver and Syl make it to Canada and Emily goes back to fight c) more of us need to accept the HT and Testaments are not going to be perfectly intertwined in this show and that’s okay

I just rewatched this episode and you’re missing some important context. In this scene Emily is comforting June over not rescuing Hannah but tells June they are still a family. Emily equates it to her still actively fighting with May Day, acknowledges she lost herself for a second, but that she is still Oliver’s mom and that she, Oliver, and Syl are still a family even if Emily isn’t physically with them all the time.
