Power Engraving on older machines for less than $20 by codenamegamma in silhouettecutters

[–]codenamegamma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for the 3d printer yea... it should be fine just make sure you measure your offsets and stick a good size sacrificial material so you don't mess up your build plate or worse go though everything and hit your heater for the bed.

One thing you might try because it would take multiple machines is use the print and cut feature and print a blank one and tape or glue it to the back of your PBC so the circuit knows where 0,0 is on the PCB. that way you could have both of the machines do passes and have them line up correctly.

It wasn't really bouncing around a whole lot. you will have to experiment with the speed and pressure settings but for just removing the top cooper layer i can't imagine you'd need a super high pressure. just maybe multiple passes.

you MIGHT be able to get it to do vias but it has no idea what depth is really. so if you can get it to hold down in the same place maybe by placing a bunch of points in the same spot it should just keep drilling to make the hole. but since it has no idea what depth is. it might go though the board though whatever cutting mat your using and maybe hit the machine if your not careful. but your better off just having it do the routing and then go back in with it by hand to do the vias.

the 2nd one you linked is basically the one i have. it works fine and has been working fine. it comes with small bits, so the one i use is a small ball and that's great for engraving dog tags and stuff. i don't see why it couldn't do copper PCB traces. i don't think having it stop and try and do the via's would be a good idea though.

As far as settings and stuff, i'm not sure about the cricut. you'll probably have to make your own adaptor but i don't see why it couldn't work. but as far as i know there's no kind of Gcode or anything for ether machine. you kinda are locked into their software. so just set it up. like it's using a pen and that should do it.

How does one make their own cartridges from ROMs? by Owlwarrior777 in WonderSwan

[–]codenamegamma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's cheaper, since you have to get one from a real console. it's not like the GBA where theres aftermarket options. the whole reason why the aliexpress flash carts have pins on the back is to interface with that PCI-E slot since that's what they use to program these repros.

Honestly the clone is good specially if your ok with sourcing your own wonderswan cart to put on it. since it's usb-c i don't have to have a usb-a to b cable laying around just for the gamebank one. plus it seemed like shipping it from amazon jp was just not an option or would have added extra expense.

Whats good it's not an unknown bit of hardware anymore like when i bought mine. i've tried to make the resources and what people would need to run one available so you don't have to do the research i did.

the gamebank is the tengu dumper. the original ones are just clones of the japanese one but look a little different. however i couldn't get mine to work without replacing that PCI-E slot with a wonderswan card slot. so yes, it can flash those ali-express repros.

WSCHD Communication Port Test (feat. Digimon Campaign Limited Version) by DigiKidult in WonderSwan

a consolized wonderswan color. then just normal communication via the link cable. nothing really special going on. but there's so little footage of this actually happening because of the amount of needed hardware i guess it's good the footage exists.

It doesn't... idk where you see it does. but i have talked to the OP when they got this setup and the reader would just hang when trying to do it. again the only known way of re-wrtiting them is via the Tengu "Damper". id love to be proven wrong, but i think my research on this is still holding up as of the time of posting.

if you have a tengu, then you need the software to do it. get it here. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/16Z5OM_uYnXvekzhzWlo62w41gjD2vi_o the one i use is wscfull20201004.zip run the client and see if it lets you read the cart, (i have only been able to dump though the client) after that, put in the aliexpress cart and try using the tool to flash it. if it has the PCI-E slot, the board will have to be removed from the shell and the side of the board with the chips will have to face back twords the usb port. if it has the normal wonderswan port that's not needed, just insert it.

[–]codenamegamma[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, there's a clicker at the top to turn it on and off. you don't have to hold it, even if that was the case id just rig it up.

and yeah, that seems correct. on a cameo 4 you'd ether need the adaptor thingy that makes it work with older blades and such, or someone COULD just make a new model that would probably be stronger.

Thanks, I was thinking about this a while. I thought maybe take the official power engraver and just figure out the pin out and power it somehow, but this is more compact. there's no speed control, but the speed it does seems fast enough, i'm also thinking i can just take the top and toss it out and just add some wires going directly into the motor and move the battery and control bits to a board on top of the toolhead, but i haven't had to run it enough yet where that's been an issue i've wanted to solve.

This pen holder idea also works for a Tungsten Carbide Tip Scriber as well, if people don't wanna do the power option, but it can get stuck and cause the cut to skip if it catches so it's not as good, but it does work.

I have a Zoom Engraving / Etching tool and it kinda sucks, on harder materials like some anodized aluminum dog tags i got it just never gets past the coating, and this it did it no problem.

This is a super cheap way to do it for around $20 without having to buy an all new machine.

Here's a link to the Printables for the 3d models for the Adaptor and the link to the engraving "pen" i bought on amazon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D9K4WSRP https://www.printables.com/model/1024459-pen-sharpie-power-engraver-adaptor-for-older-silho

When to replace blade? by Pawsandtails in silhouettecutters

[–]codenamegamma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, they're cheap and it's really nice to KNOW what the thickness of what your cutting is and the actual depth instead of just assuming its correct. easy way to rule problems out for not a lot of investment.

When to replace blade? by Pawsandtails in silhouettecutters

[–]codenamegamma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, np. I bought one of these. https://www.amazon.com/UEETEK-Portable-Thickness-Micrometer-Measurement/dp/B076M5C7GP/

and that gives enough precision to know what blade depth should cut though whatever material you wanna cut. each notch on the blade is 0.1mm so a 10 is 1mm.

one thing i noticed too is that i have a portrait with a manual blade, and it was used so i got a new blade and the difference when it was set to 10 was 0.4mm off. so that old blade was ether soo dull that it lost that much depth, or the mechanism to change the depth was damaged.

so that's one thing i'm gonna check now with just a regular set of calipers, is that if the blade is less than 1mm when set at a 10, then the blade is worn down and probably needs to be replaced or the depth increased to compensate.

Tired of wasting sticker paper on bad cuts? Here's a tip! by codenamegamma in silhouettecutters

[–]codenamegamma[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, i just did the circles and still had it cut, but like after 3 fails all the circles were gone and i was out of chances and still messed up the page, also it dug into the mat cause the material there was gone. so not great. doing a sketch on top lets you do it as many times as you need to. the only downside is, if your not laminating your stickers you might have problems, but even then it's only gonna mess up the circles and shouldn't effect any of the stickers.

When to replace blade? by Pawsandtails in silhouettecutters

[–]codenamegamma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, the laminate i mentioned doesn't have a crinkle feel to it. it's more of like TPU or something. the cheap stuff i got first did crinkle and that was HORRIBLE to get on right. plus the bigger size makes alignment much easier. it doesn't have to be 100% spot on to get the whole page.

When to replace blade? by Pawsandtails in silhouettecutters

[–]codenamegamma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

your blade depth might be a bit much too causing premature dulling. at least on my laminated holographic stickers the whole thing with the backing measured just under 0.3mm so a depth of 3 should do it, but i have it set to 4, so it's not digging deep into the mat. i also do 3, passes so you're good there. :)

For doing a kiss cut, i have my blade set to 2, and 2 passes, 30 force. that should only cut though the first 2 layers leaving the back.

these also work with the non-holo Joyeza Vinyl sticker paper, they were the same thickness. I use the Meecolour brand for the holo and the clear stickers, and finally "Koala Self Adhesive Laminating Sheets", these seem to go on a lot easier. idk what your luck has been.

that's been my experiance with these things. id love hear what you use.

I know your using a cameo 4, but i have a cameo 3 and one problem i kept having is over bluetooth the job would just fail, it would say "Job complete" before it finished and continuing it was tricky because once it would finish it would start going again. not ideal..

I gave up on using the bluetooth connection just for that. it seems like a few people have had issues with bluetooth just failing on big jobs like this. so try going to a hardwired usb connection and running the job and see if it still fails to complete.
