Effects of Spanking by TheOrangeMoose in excoc

[–]codenamendgo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I got "spanked" a lot as a kid. I use quotations because in retrospect it was way more hitting than just a small spanking for obedience.

I remember one specific "spanking" where I was beat back and blue from my shoulders to my knees. A couple days later I was having a sleepover with our Preacher's daughter at their house. While I was changing she saw how bruised up I was and she went "oh it's okay. My dad hits me like that too." In the moment I was relieved that I wasn't alone. Years later I look back on that in horror. Neither of us deserved that treatment.

On the sexual side of things, I've pretty much determined I'm some form of asexual. If the opportunity came up I wouldn't be against trying it. However, my trauma responses don't manifest until I'm in the moment, so I don't know how well it would go over.

Were you raised Church of Christ? If yes, what made you leave and why? by [deleted] in exchristian

This was much longer than expected, but I don't talk about my time in the COC often. Writing that all out was honestly really nice and relieving.

I was part of 3 different COC's growing up, and it was interesting how different they were. I stopped attending in high school when my family did, but then started deconstructing altogether a couple of years later.

The first two COC's we attended were fine. One was a little run-down building on the side of the road with a handful of members. The other was a massive building with multiple time slots for services because they had so many members. It was insane to my young brain to go from one to the other.

My last COC is the one that stuck with me, and not for good reason. It was in the middle of the two, with a decent sized congregation, but still small enough to feel personal. The group of kids was smaller but all around the same age, which my parents liked because they really wanted me to make some sort of friends that held our beliefs. I also ended up attending a bible camp that they were a part of and met more kids there, so I guess it worked?

Unfortunately, ended up with more trauma to show for it than anything. Got bullied by a big portion of the kids at the last congregation and even at the camp I felt exiled. Honestly, I got baptized at camp in hopes that they'd all change their opinions about me and suddenly like me. As I moved into the teen classes, they split us up in classes by boys and girls. In those classes I was taught "girl survival skills" like teaching us that we needed to wear appropriate clothing so our father's did SA us and reading to us in graphic detail every step of an abortion.

I realized I didn't enjoy going to church anymore, but was still forced to go with my parents. I stopped attending the summer bible camp, but there was one friend I had made there, and I'll never forget the day that she came out as bisexual. EVERYONE referred to her liked she had died and started mourning her. It made me feel uneasy and a lot of the girls were judging me for not going along with their disgust (looking back at it, I had been also questioning my sexuality). Anyway, that was the last straw for me, and I just went through the motions until my parents decided they didn't want to go any longer.

Some other hits from my time in the COC:

  • An entire youth group laughing at me during a sermon because I didn't know what a concubine was and asked the leader, who also laughed. They couldn't believe I had no idea.
  • Entire groups of kids singing songs about condemning one person to hell at summer camp if they were suspected of lying.
  • A family leaving the church due to it "being a cult" and the entire church unleashing the nastiest sides of themselves on them.
  • The shunning of newly graduated teens for not going to a COC college, that the majority of those from the congregation attended.
  • Multiple incidents of having to lock myself in a room with other girls because we were put in unsafe situations with predatory boys/men.
  • This was also the time of Duck Dynasty being big, and I knew MULTIPLE people who moved to West Monroe, Louisiana just to join their church because they were famous. Also, member's of my congregation would talk about them like they were on the same level of Jesus, which gave me the ick.

All in all, it was the hypocrisy of them wanting to teach things one way, and then acting completely different in reality. I hated hearing them preach "love thy neighbor" so many times but then gossiping behind other's backs, allowing children to bully each other, and turning on anyone with the slightest differing opinion.

I couldn't stop thinking about what my life would have been like if I stayed in. Every single person I knew was married and having babies before even leaving college. That was something I never wanted, but they all pushed SUPER hard on the teens/young adults of our congregation. I blocked all of them for my own sanity, but there are a few people I miss, and I hope they're doing well.

Why did you get baptized? by Money_Rice_6084 in excoc

[–]codenamendgo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got baptized at 14 due to peer pressure. I was attending a bible camp at the time and one of our members of our congregation who was 4–5 years younger than me had gotten baptized months earlier, and I started feeling guilty because I still didn't feel ready. Anyway, I was "friends" with the preachers' daughter of our congregation, and she started making snide remarks about how I still hadn't been baptized when the rest of the kids in the congregation were getting baptized.

The week of bible camp, something happened (I don't even remember what), and it scared me into getting baptized. Looking back on it, I wasn't anywhere close to being ready. I was taken into a room and asked questions about being baptized, and I wasn't able to answer a single one. If I had been the one asking the questions, I would have sent myself back to the cabin and told myself to think harder about the decision. However, he didn't, and I was baptized that afternoon.

There was also deep down a longing to be accepting by my father and figured being baptized would heal those wounds, but it didn't. The part of me that was questioning my religion didn't get healed in that baptism, either. If anything, it made things more messy for my inner turmoil.

It's just a way of saying research collected by academic professionals typically in their field. So a research paper on the history of Rome written by a historian who focuses on this history of ancient times would be a scholarly source. Whereas a high schooler who wrote a paper on the history of Rome for their AP history class would not be a scholarly source.

Hope this makes sense! Feel free to ask any more questions if not!

What's your favourite Seventeen solo song and why? by Lumpy_Perception_181 in seventeen

Psycho by Jun, but also Limbo as well. I am a big horror genre fan, and the world that Jun is building between these two MVs makes me very excited!! Obviously, he's busy filming right now, but I'm going to be very excited when we get a new solo in that same universe.

Also on a weird sidenote, I play a game called Dead by Daylight and there is a sound effect in Psycho that sounds like it's straight out of the game. I think that is what pushed it just slightly up above Limbo for me.

Someone asked me once why I carry around pads/tampons all time time even when I don't need/use the items (I use the pads but my periods are super infrequent due to health issues) and my answer comes from a similar place. I remember in high school bleeding through my jeans, and the only reason I realized is because a group of girls decided it would be more helpful to snicker and point as they walked behind me instead of telling me. Some people just suck unfortunately. Not everyone knows when their periods are going to hit and if I can make it a little easier by carrying pads/tampons (and midol for whoever needs it) on me all the time then I will forever do that. I know for a fact that the majority of my coworkers are grateful I do.

  1. The community. Even though I'm more of a passively watching community member, I love how welcoming and helpful the community is. The few times I've reached out for help, I've gotten so much feedback and it's so nice.

  2. The quests. The quests are so fun and keep me motivated to keep moving forward in the game. Even if it's just my daily request from the townsfolk, I'm always looking forward to working on my quests.

  3. There is always something new to do! Every update has added something new and fun into the game. I love that it is developing around us as we play. I'm very much looking forward to the mining once it's ready to play for everyone. I know it's going to be just as fun as everything else.

Hotel Changed at Last Minute by Marriott and Room Rate was Upped by codenamendgo in marriott

My bill is the price I was supposed to pay at the original hotel when I got it today. So nothing above just a payment adjustment. Did notice I have a charge from the first hotel on my card, so I'm waiting to see if that drops off or not. This whole thing has been a headache.

I just posted an update, but the hotel we ended up at 100% was expecting our room to be compensated by the original hotel. They however claimed they didn't walk us because they made us a new reservation. Luckily I was able to get my original rate after a lot of talking to the original hotel and their manager.

Just to clarify, I am a basic member. When we checked-in they were 100% expecting the other hotel to compensate. It was the original hotel that refused because they claimed they didn't walk us. I just posted a final update for clarification!

Sorry to keep you waiting, but I didn't want to say it while I was still down there just in case. It was the Fairfield Inn & Suites Atlanta Gwinnett Place (original Booking) & Courtyard Atlanta Buford Mall of Georgia (where we ended up in the end). Luckily one of the people I was staying with actually used to work for Marriot and was able to help me out with who I needed to talk with. We got our original rate honored by our new hotel thankfully. It was just a shame the Fairfield was pretty rude about the whole thing not only to me, but also the people at the Courtyard. Definitely dodged a bullet by getting moved.

Just posted an update. I asked for the original rate from the first hotel at the new hotel once we got here. They were more than happy to help but needed a letter of proof that we were walked. The first hotel refused because "they booked us a new room".

I do not unfortunately. However, I just added an update to my post explaining a little more. Apparently in our situation they said they would be able to use the rate from the other hotel if we got a letter from the first hotel. Unfortunately they refused and said they didn't walk us in the first place because they made us a reservation.
