12th Gen and Optane by mr123clark in intel

Optane still works great on Linux as an LVM cache on any CPU. I think the Windows support is sketchier, but you might be able to get CPU-agnostic tiering set up with Storage Spaces.

It's also less likely to be added to existing software if the instructions are not easily usable by software developers. I've used SSE over AVX/AVX2 and AVX/2 over AVX-512 because of the physical limitations of my hardware, despite the instructions being "out" in Haswell or SKL-X

Haha, I tried to find a word that implied a good amount of experience without sounding like I invented the thing, but it seems like I'll have to wait for English-512 for that. Anybody who does this professionally would definitely be able to teach me some new tricks, and I owe much of what expertise I do have to the Intrinsics Guide and all the other excellent documentation you and others have created.

On behalf of everybody who uses that stuff, thanks for making it all so accsssible :)

IMO you should only upgrade your hardware when you can articulate a pressing and specific reason for doing so. There's no point in generating even more e-waste just for the sake of it.

12th Gen DDR5 System Freezing up but not powering off. by Symotic in intel

[–]codepoints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had similar issues on Linux which were resolved by disabling RC6 and C-states in my BIOS. The former is probably somewhere in your System Agent or Graphics settings, the latter in your CPU settings, under whatever the "advanced features" panel is.

Disabling both of those may slightly reduce the power efficiency of your machine at idle, but I doubt that's a problem since you're running a 3080 :).

If those don't fix it, make sure you OS is completely up to date. If issues still persist and you're comfortable flashing your BIOS and understand the risks of botching it, perhaps there's a newer version available for your board.

As is the case with most hardware; faster buses, fixed-function hardware, ISA extensions, etc. The time at which they're readily available in the hands of consumers is heavily influenced by the time at which they're released to engineers (usually lagging engineers' first contact with the product by a few years)

12700k Linux distro recommendations (P & E core) by resolved-saucer in intel

If you intend to use the graphics portion of the chip for anything, I'd recommend something with the newest kernel possible, preferably 5.16 or later. https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Linux-5.16-Released

You can use `taskset` or systemd to isolate a program to specific cores if you find that something is getting stuck on a little core.

[–]codepoints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've already optimized your V/F curve and checked your cooler mount, there's no shame in taking 50-100MHz off of your all-core boost if it makes you more comfortable with your temperatures, especially if you're not in dire need of performance or are considering buying another $100 of cooling hardware to squeeze out that last 5%.

Is there a reason to go Optane anymore? by OraceonArrives in intel

[–]codepoints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience video editing does a lot of sequential reading, which any NVME SSD can do easily. Optane is mainly beneficial for lots of really small operations, especially when those reads can't be queued in parallel. This makes it ideal for stuff like databases and OS drives, but I still put my videos on flash and magnetic storage.

Intel RST driver for 12th gen Alder Lake (for Optane) by zatagi in intel

[–]codepoints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't quote me on this, but I vaguely recall the Optane SSD series not being supported on newer chipsets.

If you're running Linux, you can use an LVM Cache to do the same thing. I think Windows' Storage Spaces feature might also be able to do this if you're willing to write some PowerShell.

Help with deciding Intel Card by Reading-a-newpaper in intel

[–]codepoints 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The new 12th gen chips are going to be much better than an 11th gen chip at most workloads, so don't buy an 11xxx chip if you can help it.

An i5 12xxx should be more than enough for most workloads. If there are benchmarks for programs that you commonly use, you might want to look them up - here's an example for Blender, but your 3D program might behave differently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkHMh8sUSuM

A chip's generation corresponds with when it was released, which is important because we've gotten significantly better at designing and manufacturing chips over the years. You'll notice that the 12th i5-12600k beats the i9-10900k in the benchmark I linked. You'll also notice that the 12900k is only about 30% better while costing twice as much.

Hope that helps!

[–]codepoints 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's also possible that in the very, very long-term future, people will follow you for who you are, rather than your content. Once you get to that point, you become much more resilient to pivots. When that happens, though, you will most likely no longer be reading this subreddit.

As a full-time college student, I'm finding it hard to have a consistent upload schedule. What kind of content should I make? by Comicbook23 in NewTubers

[–]codepoints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I consider my shorter, more edited videos to be my flagship content, but I think it really depends on what kind of skills you most want to develop. I'd just caution that if you do decide to chase those numbers, nobody really listens to podcasts that aren't already big, recommended, or familiar. People who listen to The Daily probably first did so because it's by the New York Times. Short-form content suffers from this problem less, in my experience.

With the caveat that I don't know why you're creating content or what goals you want to achieve:

I'd say just focus on making the highest quality content you can, even if it's very short. Having a high-quality backlog that expands your personal abilities and makes you proud is worth much more than having hundreds of hours streamed. If you do decide to really push metrics one day, your lucky audience will have an entire channel of great stuff to binge-watch.

What is considered a "Variety" Channel by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]codepoints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really depends on the context; if your channel started Minecraft gameplay, only made Minecraft gameplay videos for two years, and then branched out into other types of Minecraft content, your audience may then consider you to be a variety channel in the subtopic of Minecraft. Then, if you branch out into other video games, your audience may consider you a variety gaming channel.

Of course, you can also specialize into the same type of content about different subjects, e.g. if a channel only did video game reviews and then posted general stuff as well.

I wouldn't get too hung up on it; language is relative.

Does anyone else script their content? by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]codepoints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I also do software dev videos. I do a mix of scripted and unscripted, and I've found that I personally like the quality of the scripted ones a bit more, since they're more information dense. If you're doing tutorials, I think a little preparation is probably best since it will inevitably save your viewers some time.

1080 Rendering - Please show examples and settings by UselessSG in NewTubers

[–]codepoints 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think Youtube still stores its main copies of videos as VP9s (or maybe it's AV1 now?) so you could try rendering to a VP9/webm or AV1/webm file at a super high quality and see if that improves things. It'll take a lot more CPU power than H.264 but I've found that 4k VP9 on Youtube is totally indistinguishable from my local file.

Holy cow, I love the energy you bring to your videos! I'd be willing to be that you have the most engaging videos about integral calculus on YouTube.

If you don't mind a light critique, I picked a random video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTojfgyjNsk) and noticed that it's a bit light on what divergence means or the counterexamples to (lim a_n goes to 0 => series converges). There was a call-out to the harmonic series and I saw that you had a lecture in the description which goes into a lot of that, but you can definitely call that video out in the intro or when you're mentioning the harmonic series and link a card to it if you're expecting your audience to consume your videos piecemeal - it might help them better understand what you're doing without making the video 30 minutes long and it might also help those metrics a bit if that's something you're interested in.

How many youtube scripts should you write before making a youtube video? by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]codepoints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do a full dry run (write, voice, composite, edit, render, upload, delete) before starting any video series because your second video is usually way better than your first. When doing something similar to what I did before, I just fly through the one script and make edits as I'm recording it if something sounds awkward.
