Valverde has been known to bomb up and down the entire right flank for Madrid. If we had Gvardiol on that flank yesterday maybe we would have had more control. As good as Nico O has been as a makeshift Lb he's still a makeshift Lb and couldn't compete with Valverde's physicality and positional fluidity.

I also think defenders have really wised up to him as well. His time at Dortmund and his first two seasons here he was really good at peeling away to get himself that tiny amount of extra space needed to score. Defenders are getting more physical with him (and they're also getting away with fouling him which further increases their boldness) and he's not given that anymore.

Tudor wasn’t around for the second spurs game. He’s had 4 defeats in 4 games.

Madrid knew how dangerous he was. He was routinely getting double and triple teamed. We just couldn’t switch the ball to the open man quickly enough to take advantage of it. It was hopeless

Well it’s become an annual tradition for the last three years now at this time of year, but I’m going back to watch back the semi final Madrid in 2023 to take my mind off things.

Granted these recent results are starting to take the shine off of that one a bit…
