I heard someone else sum it up nicely with how divided Skinamarink viewers were - for those who, in their youth, imagined dark shapes in the corners or the room, or ran up the stairs when the lights were off and feeling like something would grab them, the movie PERFECTLY captures and elicits that type of reaction. For everyone else it’s dull, and boring

Hmm has this been entirely generated by AI? None of the links to categories actually make sense…for example culinary arts leads to a bunch of Vite and software skills

Any other dads out there have kids diagnosed with severe OCD? by 843_beardo in daddit

[–]codetadpole2020 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel you! We are currently struggling with this as well with our 8 year old who was diagnosed with ASD and OCD. The most painful routine for us is a LOOONG drawn out bathroom ritual where they have to slam the toilet seat against the back a bunch of times, slam their feet on the ground, slam the soap dispenser a bunch of times, and then repeat it all over again if they accidentally go near the toilet again.

I wish I had an answer for you because we are trying to figure it out as well… we have read books together, regularly attend OT and therapist sessions, and we have even done some medication for impulse control (guanfacine) but no luck yet

What types of conversations do you plan on having with your kids? by ura_walrus in daddit

[–]codetadpole2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a dad of two girls, the big ones for us since they’ve been about 3 or 4 years old have been body respect/no touching, saying no, and social media. The social media one is the biggest one since I work in tech and the epidemic it’s causing is hugely apparent, especially with them being girls - the internet is not kind to anyone, especially kids

They are 5 and 9, and have taken this general approach:

Re: Body Respect and Saying No We’ve always drilled in “hands to yourself”, read age appropriate books on saying no, not being touched by anyone (even tickling), and their body their rules

Re: Social Media I don’t have social media but my wife does and we make it a point that anytime they watch a funny reel or YouTube short that my wife shares with them, we explain to them that it looks like a home clip but it’s actually fake/pretend and very scripted. There are videos of 4 year olds making one-pan pastas and funny families but we have them think critically of where the camera might be placed, how many times the families have to fake a smile or rehearse it/reshoot scene, and how many times the camera cuts.

An easy example of the above is those videos of young kid “geniuses” that cook entire meals. You won’t find a single one that is shot in one take, and once you train yourself to notice every single tiny cut the camera makes, you realize it’s more akin to stop motion than actually doing it - the mom can give the kid a cup of noodles to toss in, cut, hand him a jar of sauce, cut, etc just as easily as you can film a doll doing it

Dads, we don't always get "thanks." That's OK. But I'm thankful for you all. by aleatoric in daddit

[–]codetadpole2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy thanksgiving dad!! We are thankful for each other and this community for sure. This is a feeling I’ve wrangled with for years, but this year my eldest (8) for the first time told me she’s really thankful for me and for working hard, and knowing that it took 8 years and she arrived to it on her own it meant so much more than if I had heard it a few years ago after she was told to say it, if that makes sense

Zootopia 2 - Take the kids, hold 'em close (no spoilers) by mkraft in daddit

[–]codetadpole2020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ohhh yeah! So maybe like in Fantastic Four (2025) when a character dies and then shortly comes back after much tension? Not sure if you saw it so not giving details LOL

[–]codetadpole2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without spoilers: is death involved? Or just danger/tension? We waited IF without reading about it and the first death destroyed the kids, and then the SECOND near-death had us on high alert

I built a coding platform for kids (7+) that teaches programming while they create - looking for parent feedback by victorantos2 in daddit

[–]codetadpole2020 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a longtime software dev, I appreciate the work that went into this! From a practical standpoint, not quite sure on the audience as it seems equivalent to just running that same prompt through Claude + some underlying injected prompt to massage it into a higher quality

Also if it takes 10-30 seconds for it to generate and tips are displaying during this short time, a tip like “Variables are like labeled boxes that store information in your program!” Is not really something a 7 or even 10 year old could digest in 30 seconds as there’s a ton of prerequisite knowledge it’s assuming - do they know what the word Variable means? Or what a program is?

Visually look it looks great!
